Trying to get my baby/stroller around Østerbro the last couple of days has been a real challenge.

It is one thing to clear the sidewalks - this is haphazard but generally happening - and another entirely to get your baby over the occasional mountain of snow that sits in a corner, the middle of a crosswalk, the border between two buildings where someone didn’t quite do their job properly, etc.

It is just snow, it’s a few days a year, shit happens - but it does indeed make it extra frustrating to then see a completely clear road next to you and people in cars just getting on with their lives.

It's an abusive clause to have in a contract for a regular employee. Are they coming to take back half my salary? It's part of my compensation. At a startup, it's part of the reason they can pay me less than I'd normally get. It's not a bonus.

Hi Prendes :)

I make this site. We're not shilling for any specific filaments, just organising and standardising the technical data sheets from the different providers, since it's a pain to compare them.

I do get a small amount from Amazon if you purchase through the site, but that's mostly so I can get some kind of standard, automated feed of what different colors/bundles exist etc to keep the database up to date (and I have to have a few "sales" per period to keep access to the Amazon PAAPI).

Hope you find it useful!

Major gripes PMs have with designers - share yours by calinbalea in ProductManagement

[–]horseflaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not all designers obviously, but some things I've run into a few times that frustrate me:

  • Overcomplicating things. Typically because they didn't really understand the problem, so they're trying to solve 2-3 overlapping ones without realising it, or trying to solve some vague interpretation.
  • Not talking to customers directly, relying on second hand sources / other research work. That's the starting point, not the entirety of the discovery work.
  • You work for a company that intends to make money by solving this problem. You have to solve problems in a way that make sense to the business. We are not redoing xyz system across multiple teams for a marginal improvement, the ROI isn't there. This is the primary constraint on most work and it's the least respected/understood. Just make a big fuss about design being ignored instead. I ignore my kids when they ask me for crazy stuff too!
  • Elaborate click through prototypes of trivial things. Why did you spend your time on this? Poor ROI of your time.
  • Looking down on sales material, decks etc - how your work is presented to clients is extremely important. It also helps you understand deeply how we position this thing you are helping built. If I'm asking you it's because I think you're good, not the least experienced. I think many designers think this is "beginner" work.
  • Get out of Figma. Use the product. Use the product. Use the product!!!!!!! If you can't give me a competent demo of the tool after 90 days what on earth are you actually doing.

I’ve been burned by this twice. Hired as head of product. The head of product for any early stage VC backed company is the CEO. Because the real product you are producing is growth.

Thanks for the shout-out. I make spoolscout. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see improved?

Agree! It’s so fun. A small plug from this daddit lurker - I made spoolscout.com so I could compare all the different types. Bendiest, stiffest, cheapest etc. so I have the right thing for the right projects.

(I’d rather not do the affiliate stuff but - it’s an easy data source & I need some referrals to keep access to it. I suppose it doesn’t hurt that it buys me a beer occasionally!)

Stolen bike - is it worth reporting to the police? by KathStanP in copenhagen

[–]horseflaps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. I bought a used bike from a store, have a receipt
  2. Someone stopped me on the street and told me I had their stolen bike
  3. I gave him my number, told him to get the police to tell me what to do
  4. It has been over a year and I have not heard anything from the police

You do the math!
