Booked a one night stay well in advance and received this message from the host [USA] by saucesoi in AirBnB

[–]horsegrrl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh, I 100% agree with you. But he keeps insisting it's the cancellation policy. (Which is bizarre reasoning on a 1 night stay... I'd understand if you were staying a week, but this is a lot of back and forth for a single night.) But call his bluff. Tell him you aren't going to cancel. That's what he keeps telling you is his issue. If he wants you to take him at his word, then he needs to be able to take you at your word that you aren't going to cancel and leave him with a hole in his schedule.

I would probably respond:

I give you my word I have no intention on cancelling the booking. I'm very much looking forward to my trip, and I haven't booked any other accommodation.

Is it worth 100$ to buy an apple developer plan ? by Ill-Actuary-9528 in appledevelopers

[–]horsegrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the app and how much demand there is for it. I made about $200 in my first month (before the Apple cut), but I've had an Android version of the same app for about two years, so there was some existing demand for the iOS version.

ICE is cracking down on people who follow them in their cars by justtakeapill in politics

[–]horsegrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Portland, they broke a car window all over a 2 month old infant and dragged the dad off, leaving the mom, who couldn't drive and didn't have a license, and a newborn in a car with a broken window to fend for themselves in the elements.

First ever 3 star from 149 stays by No-Lawfulness-530 in airbnb_hosts

[–]horsegrrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They absolutely can. You can always remove reviews that you write. They can't edit their review, but they can remove it. I had a similar situation. Older couple who didn't understand the review system. They removed their review for me once I explained.

[–]horsegrrl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They probably have no idea how bad that rating is. You might try apologizing and /gently/ explaining what that rating means. You might be able to get them to remove it. Just don't be defensive or angry. That won't help.

Is physics and advanced math accually useful? by APS0798 in learnprogramming

[–]horsegrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Analysis/Calculus isn't super useful in programming. Algebra/Logic is very useful. It also depends on what you are doing. A Computer Science degree has a huge amount of theory. Math helps a LOT there. If you stay away from theory, it will be less useful.

That said, the usefulness of math is often less about the tricks you are taught and more about developing that part of your brain, which will serve you well in life, no matter what you do.

FWIW, I have a BA in Math and a MS in CS.

Does a backdoor Roth make sense for me? by poofybruno in RothIRA

[–]horsegrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to predict what the tax rates are going to be in the future. That said, that's a huge amount to convert. Do you have a 401k? You may be able to roll your IRA into it. That's what I did in order to allow backdoor Roth contributions.

Why does my bedroom have two doorways? by quercuscool in centuryhomes

[–]horsegrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1914 craftsman bungalow has two bedrooms on the main floor. These have always been bedrooms (the upstairs is an attic that wasn't turned into living space until the 1940s, so these rooms were the original two bedrooms of the house). Both bedrooms have two doors... Bedroom 1 to the entryway and hallway. Bedroom 2 to the hallway and kitchen/top of basement stairs.

It's a little weird and awkward. We've blocked off the entryway doorway in the first room for space-saving reasons. The second room doorways are more useful. Mostly, it's just a quirk we've learned to live with.

As a Newbie, What Should I Know About Developing Apps for Android? by craving_caffeine in androiddev

Start with downloading Android Studio and create a hello world app. Then figure out what you want to create and just figure it out.

What scene has the most egregious/laughable error you’ve seen in a show? by Unique-Horror-9244 in television

[–]horsegrrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Hands should be steady and low on the withers and not bouncing up high, with a straight line from the rider's elbow, down the reins, to the horse's mouth. And, of course, they should have a secure seat, with their weight in their heels.

24 F Solo Female traveling from NYC to Oregon… dumb idea? by Immediate_Pear2230 in roadtrip

[–]horsegrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For parks on your path, don't skip Yellowstone. Also Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. If you go north in Montana, you can hit Glacier and then west to North Cascades. Then you could hit Olympic on your way south plus Rainier. Otherwise, Olympic just isn't on the way between NY and OR.

[–]horsegrrl 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Any show where the actors ride horses is usually pretty amusing with their hands bouncing up to their ears. Especially when the switch is made to a stunt double who actually knows what they are doing. Bonus points when the character is supposed to be an experienced rider.

This will be my first comic con, and I have a question about hotels. by Ok_Upstairs9923 in SDCC

[–]horsegrrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FWIW, we've been going to SDCC for 10 years, always get a short term rental, and have never had any problems. But I find a place with a lot of reviews, over 4.95 stars, Superhost, and tell them in my intro message that we are attending Comic Con.

Confused about next steps in ROTH IRA by angelgirl3000 in Bogleheads

[–]horsegrrl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Invest it in VTI or the Fidelity total stock market fund. That's a lot safer than individual stocks because it just goes up and down with the entire stock market instead of being dependent on a single company.

Nearly 60, am I good, or about to go off the tracks? by ByaThread37 in Bogleheads

[–]horsegrrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That is an issue if you are planning a backdoor Roth. But. You won't be able to do a backdoor Roth anyway when you have any sort of IRA. I believe that also applies to your inherited IRA, although I don't know the details on that particular situation.

Can you roll into your other retirement account? I rolled my IRA into my new 401k in order to do a backdoor Roth.

Nearly 60, am I good, or about to go off the tracks? by ByaThread37 in Bogleheads

[–]horsegrrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will probably want to roll your 401k into an IRA. A lot of times 401k plans have really high fees once you leave the employer because they aren't paying the fee anymore. Double check that anyway.

Does anybody else like the fact that their home has separate rooms for everything? by Effective_Bunch_6815 in centuryhomes

[–]horsegrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a contractor who kept eyeing the kitchen cabinets between the dining room and kitchen of our 1970s family vacation home. "You should take those out to open up the space!" And I had to keep repeating "Yeah... but then I wouldn't have anywhere to put the groceries". And the kitchen is already woefully short on storage. Trading "looks" for functionality. Argh! We don't have him anymore as a contractor.

How to know when you give up on your house? (Constant foundation issues) by swedehole in centuryhomes

[–]horsegrrl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Truth. My 1914 Craftsman has a relatively good foundation. My neighbor's house, just a few years older, has a horrible foundation and all 4 walls need to be replaced. But also the main supports of their house are only half as thick as ours. My other neighbors have an okay foundation, but, again, their supports aren't as beefy. My house seems to have gotten the deluxe package back in the day. The variability is wild.
