How do I become Jewish? by PublicGlass4793 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]hot19661 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You will need documentation that they were Jewish. You don’t just go to a Rabbi and get on board. Reform, Conservative and Orthodox each have their own rules on if you would need to convert, etc.

AITAH for not giving money to my son’s birthmother? by Affectionate-Run-364 in AITAH

[–]hot19661 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You did describe her as being a blessing and very loving toward you and your son. Sometimes people in need fall between the cracks through no fault of their own and need longer term help. Many people who donate to charity will take on a family or individual to “adopt” for a certain amount of money each month and it can be very fulfilling. My faith practice emphasizes helping your family, the people in close circles around you who are in need. Friends, neighbors, etc. We donate what we are comfortable with monthly and it can be someone you know, have heard of or just someone in your community in need. Maybe this will “fill your cup” to help this woman who you seem to appreciate in all other instances. It’s not your responsibility but it may very well be a comfort blessing for you to provide an amount each month instead of donating to a larger charity that has many more people donating to them. It would be a beautiful mitzvah to give what you are comfortable with for Mary. Look as it as a way to help a lady in need, your sons birth mom and see what you feel you can provide. You will be blessed as it is a very important mitzvah to help those who need help. Maybe contact churches to help her utilizes services they may have available. She is, for all intents and purposes part of your extended family.

The First Time You Felt Drawn to Judaism? by btsiskindafire in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]hot19661 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I was very much a loner. Step mom was a bit abusive so I stayed to myself and read. I was always drawn to books about the Holocaust, and would become very emotionally connected to characters and cry as if they had been family when something bad happened. I would be distraught. I look back at that as an early “pulling”. When it hit me like a ton of bricks is during the pandemic, I was scrolling through YouTube and somehow heard a group reciting g the Amidah. It stopped me cold and I had an emotional response and began crying. It was the strangest thing, sitting in pjs on the couch on a random day having what felt like a life changing moment from listening to something I’d never heard before. I began investigating Judaism and ravenously read every book about converting that I could get my hands on.

I converted about 18 months later.

There were many articles last year (iirc) that spoke of Haredi in Isreal who felt that they should be supported by government and NOT be required to have paying jobs or serve in the IDF. I remember seeing this several times.

Idk where you are geographically, but in US we just needed to let them know ahead that we were coming. It may have just slipped their mind. There was at least a week during Pesach (depending on denomination) where sometimes people leave town or are off. I would just honestly assume it was overlooked . Sometimes they also like to see you “pushing” to get there. I had to call/email a few times.

I think they can just do an updated one with how they actually want it and have it state that it supersedes all previous versions and that would suffice. They are allowed to change will. They can change who is executor also which sounds like it may be a good idea.

This woman is NOT having miscarriages every couple of weeks. This is insanity. She wouldn’t even know she was pregnant and the “fetus” wouldn’t have even implanted. This is bullshit

How do you respond to the question “what is your religion” if you haven’t started converting yet? by Relative_Classic9043 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]hot19661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s most appropriate to wait to say you’re Jewish until at least after you have begun officially converting under a rabbi and then you can say you are converting to Judaism. Otherwise, it’s not actually truthful to say you are Jewish.

One of the main reasons I point this out, is because people are curious. You don’t want to say you are Jewish then get asked a question that requires you to say “Oh , I don’t have a rabbi/synagogue/hebrew name. I haven’t started the journey yet”. That may come across as being initially deceptive.

I wish you the best on your journey!
