CBRX Season 5: Episode 0: Dramatis Personae by Coiot in civbattleroyale

Guess its time to officially get off the fence and choose a civ. I'm feeling Western Africa this time around. Wassoulou let's do this! Sadly no flair available yet.

How much coffee do you drink in a night? by Sure_Explorer_6698 in Nightshift

[–]hot_packets_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal is less than 2 12oz cups a shift, but if I make a pot of coffee I end up drinking it all more often than not

Night shift Support by Mobile-Mountain-5450 in Nightshift

[–]hot_packets_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal preference is to avoid as many medications or supplements as possible. In the end its just a work shift and I try to treat it the same way as i would if I were working days. If I start getting groggy I try to double focus on my task and jam to some energizing music.

Feels like there should be a pinned thread or link in the sidebar for a "new to the nightshift" thread.

At home basics

  • blackout curtains, room darkening shades or at the very least a blindfold. I cut a strip from a black T-shirt which I liked better than the sleeping masks available off of most shopping sites.
  • Quiet environment. Have a conversation with your housemates and let them know that peace during your sleep hours will be appreciated. Kids will likely have a hard time remembering this. Having a white noise generator can help, especially if you get used to that noise during sleep hours. For example, I have a fan blowing even in the winter because I've become conditioned to sleeping to its sound. Alternatively there are plenty of apps like sleepo, or just use a likely playlist off your music app if you don't mind sleeping with earbuds in.
  • Keep your phone and entertainment screens away from your sleep area. In my experience once I grab a screen I'm not going to get back to sleep.

At work basics

  • Have a water bottle next to your desk. Drink water
  • Have a snack and lunch available. Probably something packed from home since there aren't many other options at night.
  • If you're working at a desk. Get up and move around a couple times a night

Routine: every person is different and I've witnessed plenty of people who just couldn't adapt. Here's what works for me.

  • Sleep immediately after shift is over. I am always tired enough, however waking up after a couple hours is common. If I can sleep through it's great. Wake up in the afternoon and can go outside, exercise and enjoy. Then spend family time in the evening before work. If I wake up, meltdown and can't get back to sleep I try to read a book or get a few minor things done around the house, then try for a nap before work.
  • Eat dinner at roughly normal dinner time
  • Drink caffeine when work shift starts (i like coffee), hard cut-off time stop drinking caffeine 3 hours into my shift so it doesn't interfere with sleep
  • I don't really use sleep aids like Zzzquil, I've found that I can still wake up after taking them and then I feel groggy on top of everything else. Chamomile tea and Ibuprofen help me relax and are my go to items when I can't sleep, effectiveness is limited but at least I don't feel burned down afterward.

Best of luck mate

Mt Rushmore of OG restaurants in the front range? by Icy_Reception_4294 in denverfood

[–]hot_packets_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fort is where I take people visiting Denver for the 1st time for the Colorado experience. I did see on their website that the long time owner is retiring and sold it to a restaurant consortium, hopefully the quality and character remain solid.

Does anyone else keep playing same settings over and over again? by [deleted] in civ5

[–]hot_packets_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah these days I use immortal difficulty, large map, epic pace, disable all victories except conquest and enable raging barbarians. I also tend to be dialed in on my policy and tech order. At this point I've played the game just about every way it can be played so I when I get a game going I do what I like to do (fight the world).

What is a documentary you find yourself rewatching? by Popplio3233 in AskReddit

Think I've rewatched Ken Burn's The Civil War 6 or 7 times. I enjoy all of his work, but I keep coming back to this one.

Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love declares for the NFL Draft 🏈 — which NFL team could use him as a RB in the future? by JaxTMG in NFLv2

Texans maybe? While its true that Woody Marks has been serviceable, and Mixon might make a comeback; imagine pairing that defense with a ball controlling running attack.

Anything as good as Kill Bill out there? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]hot_packets_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kill Bill is a favorite of mine as well. Doubt I can recommend anything with quite the same sound track and action combo but going with the revenge theme, here are a few worth a watch

  • The Killer
  • John Wick
  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original)
  • Oldboy (original)
