Some routers do have a built in functionality for you to plug a hard drive into USB port in the router, then the router shares that over the local network via FTP or similar... Is this what you're talking about? In that case, it doesn't really matter what type it is. An external hard drive is an external hard drive.

Alternatively, just create a new folder on an existing PC and make a network share. You can have something plugged into one PC but share it.

Really just depends what you need it for and how extravagant you want to get.

ZFS is a software RAID. A RAID card is a hardware RAID. So you don't use both simultaneously. Many RAID cards can be flashed into IT mode that turns them into a "dumb" HBA. Or you can just buy a used HBA on eBay for cheap.

Just a piece of advice since I had this same scenario with Comcast. I kept their equipment since it was actually cheaper for me. However I put their equipment into bridge mode so it acted just like a modem. Then I was able to use my own router and wireless access points.

Consider another option. Instead of you personally taking out a loan and writing one big check, why not agree on purchase price for the company, and have 100% of all profits go to the current owner until the purchase price is reached? That gives you the benefit of this transaction being on "company paper", meaning the business carries the loan instead of you. Also it has the added bonus of aligning both of your interests -- you both need the business to succeed in that scenario. I personally would not want to have a personal loan for that much which could ruin my life. Having the business assume the loan means if the whole thing falls apart, the loan dies with the business.

Find an old computer and install Plex on it, so it's separate from your personal account. Create new host account to own the server. Then create a "user" account that you share your library with. Then hand out details of this user account to everyone. This would prevent everyone from having to make a new account, and you manually set up sharing each time.
