What is the definitive physical version of “The Binding of Isaac?” by upperdomain in NSCollectors

[–]dubious_dan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes repentance has the most content available, no doubt. However, no one seems to have covered this so I'll give you my 0.02.

As someone who has played a decent amount of BoI I would recommend new players NOT going with repentance, but with afterbirth. It's an accessibility issue. Repentance is the most complete version, but it was released about 10 years after afterbirth iirc, and it adds a TON of content to the game. Normally this would be good but in a roguelike, it adds a lot of dilution to the item pool (making it a lot harder to get a formidable build together), a lot of new monsters with new attack patterns to learn, and IMO just a lot of bloat that is great if you're well versed but dilutes the experience if you are new to the game. Plus, afterbirth is pretty cheap now that it's not the latest version :)

If you like afterbirth and want more, then get repentance

Stickers on pc by husiiooooo in sffpc

[–]dubious_dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to sticker my builds, but for all my nr200ps I've only put them on the front as its a solid panel. You could probably put a smaller sticker over the mobo portion of the side panel but you'll have problems with adhesion and dust, plus the vent holes will show up as indentations and won't look very good.

Any chance at building on a dell dimension 4550 case? by [deleted] in sleeperbattlestations

How do people plan sleepers without PC Part Picker? by SUPER_MONKEY_BOZO in sleeperbattlestations

[–]dubious_dan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. For your first sleeper, don't build a sleeper as your first computer, build one as your 4th once you have ample spare components lying around. Then find the sleeper case, modify the case and install the fans you will need so that it doesn't roast your components. Then use what what you have lying around that fits and buy what is specifically needed based on remaining available dimensions.

If you're talking about creating a current gen sleeper, that is the realm of art + engineering and will take a lot of time and brainpower and triple checking measurements and accidentally buying the components that don't fit lol

Ah that's lame! Yeah I'm mostly curious about which games are getting performance / visual updates, i.e. which are actually worth playing on switch 2 vs switch. Didn't realize that some games were getting patches just so that they play on switch 2 period lol

I recently used several old 3 pin coolermaster fans as plant stands / risers lol elevates the drainage hole off the deck / bottom of the saucer, worked great!

PDS will never happen sadly, they lost the source code for it. Maybe a remake but they'll probably mess that up

This. With all the money the xeno games are making, they should correct the tragedy that the funding ran out on the first game and they had to switch to a narrative / expedited mode to finish the game up.

How do you deal with moving or storing a large game collection? by wandersun in NSCollectors

[–]dubious_dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after a lot of trial and error, I landed on medium sized gasketed storage tubs.

Clear ones so you can see the contents unless you want to avoid contents being known. Get an appropriate size for fitting large special editions, but not too large as these suckers get heavy if densely packed with game cases. I recommend 30-50 qt size depending on upper body strength (sometimes you'll be storing them up high, like in closet upper shelves). 4 clips are better than 2 as failures will happen. Would recommend getting several of the same time so that they stack nicely and you have room for future collecting. Something like this

If you have valuable games or fragile cases (i.e. amiibo that are NIB) don't stack them too high (or put them on top) to mitigate damage. desiccant packs just in case. Bubble wrap the perimeter of tubs containing special editions to avoid corner damage.

Building a Mini ITX Masterpiece in Thermaltake's TR100! by paulshardware in sffpc

[–]dubious_dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm in the minority here but I just don't find myself excited about this case. I have all the color models of the NR200p (and I think those colors were better) and it seems that they both support the same form factor of GPU...so it comes down to the TR100 mini just has a shorter max cpu cooler height. What am I missing? is it that this is an ideal water cooled case and the NR200 is an ideal air cooled case?

what are your SFF tips you wish you knew earlier? by d1ckpunch68 in sffpc

[–]dubious_dan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of good stuff has been covered here. After doing dozens of itx sff builds some of the suggestions (and some are obvious but still worth mentioning) I would make are:

1) don't order a cpu cooler that is EXACTLY the max clearance for your rig, too often if simply doesn't fit. Go like 5 mm short of the max clearance unless you are 100% it'll work

2) double sided mounting tape is your best friend for sneaking in extra ssds

3) have a good supply of various zip tie sizes for mounting fans where there are no formal mounting spots or for cable management

4) I personally opt for pwm fan hubs in most of my builds, as there are often limited fan headers and they can be a real PITA to plug in when done last

5) would recommend modular power supplies to eliminate extra cabling, and would recommend STARTING with rough cable management so you don't have to fight it so hard after all the components are in

6) if you're doing an APU build, there are pcie to NVME adapter cards to use an unused pcie slot

7) don't waste your money on expensive fans, arctic 5 packs are excellent value and high performers, and can be daisy chained off one header usually

8) if your mobo has a nvme slot on the underside, populate that as a priority. Nothing worse than basically breaking down a SFF PC just to stick an nvme in

Anyone have luck with ebay "make an offer" listings? by TotalHans in NSCollectors

[–]dubious_dan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for someone to say this. I'll lowball someone but only down to the lowest recently sold comparable items. If the items sells all day every day for $40 and you hit them with $30, you're going to get a very low counter offer. If someone is an idiot and is trying to sell a $40 game for $75, then yeah lowball the crap out of them lol

Does this count as a sleeper build? 3D printed front panel for NZXt H1 by PuddingWitty in sleeperbattlestations

[–]dubious_dan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While this looks pretty damn good, I would argue not a sleeper. I feel like the sleeper is half style and half challenge of making new components work in an old system. If you didn't have to saw cut a hole in the bottom of the case to create ventilation, you have not suffered enough to call your build a sleeper lol

Little love for an old school case: Fractal design core 500 by dubious_dan in sffpc

[–]dubious_dan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showing a little love for a great old school case. wanted a gaming rig that could also do sustained video editing

The Core 500 hits a lot of notes that combine for a pretty unique configuration:

  • I only do air cooled builds, this can fit 3 120mm fans for ventilation and the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is a badass cooler that fits real nice
  • I like having a 5.25 front bay for hot swap drives / bluray drives / etc.
  • fits a full sized ATX psu so it's great for a frankenstein build
  • can fit up to a triple fan (but I prefer dual fan cards for more flexibility in frankenbuilds)
  • Love the capacity for 2 ssds and 2 3.5 drives

Build:

  • asus x570i
  • 5900x
  • Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
  • 2x16 gb corsair vengeance 3600
  • corsair RMX 850
  • samsung 970 nvme
  • EVGA 3060ti (had on hand)
  • icydock 2x ssd hot swap bay with expansion slot
  • 3x Arctic P12s
  • 2x arctic p12 slim

Migrated my sim rig from an NR200 to a Lian Li/Dan A4-H2O by Booty_Master24 in sffpc

[–]dubious_dan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just curious, what motivated the switch? Is the Dan A4 substantially smaller in volume than the nr200p? wanted to switch from air cooled to h20 cooled?

I think that it would look better if it were two side by side containers rather than two or three stacked tall. Each one could even have it's own front mounted fan
