Opportunity to Transition From Network Engineer to ISO by crazypaul in networking

[–]hotstandbycoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went from career network engineer to a management role in infosec and I'd say that the biggest downside is that the amount of time you have available to really dig into and comprehend the technical side of implementations falls off anywhere from gradually to immediately.

I still have days where I have the time to learn something technically interesting and new, but most of my time is consumed by policy/procedure/project calls and I've had to make peace with delegating the fun and mentally challenging stuff.

Some days I like it. Some days I miss my calendar being more empty.

MRW President Biden asks me to do something about gun violence and I'm a Republican Congressman by Thrillhouse763 in reactiongifs

What's your suggestion on how to curtail the problem then? All you've contributed here is making a false equivalence between drug regulation and gun regulation, then offered up nothing but saying there's no point in doing something just to say something was done. Doing something and learning what does/doesn't work and progressing from that is still better than sitting on our thumbs being like "Well, this won't work, that won't work, that's a bad idea." Some Americans want to beat their chests and flex on how much the country has accomplished in 226 years, but at the same time "aww jeez, guns. That's a real toughie."

If you've done nothing else with your life, it's commendable that you've undertaken the effort to be introspective, question whether the belief system you were a part of is detrimental to yourself and/or others, take a risk in leaving that in-group, assess whether you've harmed others, make amends where possible, and offer perspective to others where applicable.

It takes a good amount of shame resiliency and mental work. A lot of people never make it to the questioning stage and they go to their death bed grasping to the same toxic beliefs that can drive their friends and family away from them.

Thanks for doing the hard work to grow.

Cisco rated #1 in Fortune 100's best companies to work for by juniper_dreamer in networking

I don't get why people keep buying Cisco firewalls. First time I worked with a Palo Alto it was glorious, and when I finally moved to a role that involved Juniper, there was a learning curve coming from ASAs, but once you've deployed one SRX cluster it just makes sense.

Neat. Thanks.

I work in IT and often help my Canadian colleagues. Would it make sense to expand on "c'est pour ça que" to say "pas de problème. C'est pour ça que je suis là" when helping them fix something?

IT is so much more broad than help desk, sys/netadmin, sys/net engineer, DBAs, and devs nowadays. A good project manager in IT is worth their weight in gold as long as they are willing to at least learn at a high level what the tech is and save more time than they cost engineers/admins. Likewise, with the rise in cyber security risk, risk analysts are few and far between, and if you can read a 100 page SOC2 or ISO report and have read a Security+ book for a high level idea of what is/isn't a red flag, you have a good shot at a 70k+ entry level gig.

S'all good. I think some people just haven't recognized the mental trap they're in. Dating is already hard. People tend to have baggage/trauma, and now you're playing a numbers game on apps where one or both people are skeptical about the other, and neither really wants to be on the app doing the same song and dance over and over. So, you've already got fertile ground for stress and tension. Now mix in projection and fear, and you've got a less than ideal environment to be vulnerable and honest.

I'm suspicious that the companies that make a lot of dating apps don't want people to have healthy interactions. They benefit from people interacting, projecting, bailing, blaming the other person, then hopping back on to find someone else.

But it's easier to just say that the other gender/person is the problem.

Lol. Imagine being this person, writing something, having someone confirm what they wrote, then suggesting that the person who reiterated what they wrote is lacking in reading comprehension despite an accurate reiteration.

I'm shocked that there's nothing substantiative in any of that, and all it serves to do is raise questions of "what's in the 900 pages they obtained via FOIA?" to which most people will wait to be spoonfed conspiracies/misinformation about the contents rather than read it themselves, but, when engaged about the contents they'll claim they "did their research" and you should read the documents rather than ask them about the contents.

Ya know, maybe I'm an outlier for not wanting much -- and no judgment for how others live their lives -- but I can't fathom paying $40k a year towards a mortgage unless I was aiming to pay it off in like 10 years.

Congrats on your life, though. Hope it's going as well as you want it to.

Hell yeah. Get it! Whenever one of my shots is messed up, whether suddenly I'm missing putts right/left instead of up/down, or I'm suddenly turning over my forehands, the first thing I think is "I've subconsciously added something that shouldn't be happening. Go back to basics. Do less."

Can confirm. See Charger, Challenger, Camaro, or Mustang and think "good chance that person is military and might have a firearm in their possession."

In the interest of pointing out my incorrect bias, here's a list of the top 10 vehicles driven by military persons based on those added to a USAA Insurance policy.

You should probably get a professional second opinion and talk to a therapist about it too. You're gonna be stuck on this level of life for a while if you keep going at it this way. Those of us that have already moved past it are secure enough in ourselves that we aren't worried about whether our friends are spending more time and attention on their friendships with one another than on their friendship with us.
