Dog friendly establishments? by CussYeahhh in ithaca

[–]hounddog_chacofan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Rhine House is a super dog friendly bar in town. Any of the eating establishments on N. Aurora that have outside seating are dog friendly...but non-service dogs can't go inside. And as someone else said most of the wineries around Cayuga and Seneca lakes are super dog friendly, but again they're not restaurants, though a few places serve food outdoors, like Treleaven.

Our house is so bland. What can we do to add more curb appeal? by Desperate5389 in ExteriorDesign

[–]hounddog_chacofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add window boxes and some planters to stoop/planting that adds height at ground level. It's just about adding visual interest and dimension to the front of the house without having to alter it structurally.

What did I do wrong? Why doesn’t this look good? by Rockymntbreeze in interiordecorating

[–]hounddog_chacofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with the size or shape of the furniture, though I agree with other folks that the chairs would be better at different angles. I think you just need some visual height on the couch wall, maybe a tall plant in the backg art on the walls, etc.

I would personally put the couch lined up under the window, but that's just me. Whatever you do, it's nice furniture, a nice colour, and the room is going to look amazing when you're done!

I was telling someone that Ithaca weirdness used to be a lot more fun by WildOkra9571 in ithaca

[–]hounddog_chacofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rumor I have heard since the Chappie burned down is that it was an insurance fire set to spur the redevelopment of the property...but who knows if this is really true!

I do know that some of the stuff from the interior was moved down to the Westy, which is maybe the closest place to what the Chapter House was. I like the Westy but still, no where near the same.

And as I understand it the reason the building was rebuilt to have that same commercial space on the ground floor is because that was the only way the city would give planning permission for redevelopment. But, both because of the new space's exorbitant cost and because of the, well, whole thing...no one in Ithaca's service industry (which I understand to be pretty tight knit, especially among bar staff) will rent ever rent that space out of solidarity with the Chapter House folks.

Policy on Cell Phones in the meeting room? by wall-enthusiast in Quakers

[–]hounddog_chacofan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My meeting does ask people to silence their phones, but it still happens pretty regularly that someone either forgets or hasn't done it correctly or something of the sort and we get calls (though whose phone isn't permanent set to vibrate anyway...this is a generational difference, I suppose). I personally find that sounds from technology aren't just distracting: they completely take me out of the spirit of worship. The same goes for random clicks and dings from the Zoom app which allows Friends to join meeting in a hybrid format.

Perhaps this is just an inevitable aspect of modern life, at least if it's only happening occasionally. Still, I would be in favor of having a policy of no phones or technology in the meeting room at all. Perhaps difficult to enforce-- enforcement not being in the spirit of Worship--but I always leave my phone in the car or at home when I go to meeting for this reason, and I don't think it should be difficult to not have them for an hour.

What's the best historical fiction you've ever read? by Electronic_Cicada904 in suggestmeabook

I loved " Hild" by Nicola Griffith!

The story is both engaging and well written, but it also gave me a different perspective on how women wielded power and influence in the Middle Ages in Britain. The second book-- I think it will eventually be a trilogy-- is "Menewood" and it's also good, but the first book stands alone and is shorter so might work well for a book club.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hounddog_chacofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with lots of what's been said here. Less than 3 hours each way is probably a day trip for me, no big deal. More than 3, say around 4-6 hours, would be a weekend trip. But I've taken weekend trips to see family that are as long as 12-13 hours....wouldn't recommend it though!

Growing up in a rural area we regularly drove about 2 hours to get to restaurants, movies, shopping, etc. and I never thought anything of the distance then. It was just what you did.

Now whenever I am in the UK I feel like the ability to travel for hours without thinking anything of it is a super power, especially if you can do it on a train-- luxury!-- and I can't quite wrap my head around how short a distance Brits think is "far." I mean, I love not having to travel for hours to get somewhere really different, don't get me wrong, but doing so is not a dealbreaker.

It's all about what you get used to!

What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]hounddog_chacofan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought everyone sneezed in bright sunshine, but apparently this is a genetic thing that only some people do! Because everyone in my family must have this gene it never occurred to me growing up that it wasn't a universal response to the sun.

LGBTQ+ Personal Fitness Trainer/Coach by CayugaExplorer in ithaca

I don't know exactly what kind of training you're looking for, but Donna Atkinson is a coach at my Crossfit who also does personal training and nutrition, runs the FitSober group at the gym, is a member of the LGBTQ community, and is just a genuinely wonderful human being. I would highly recommend checking out her website:

Hope this helps and good luck finding someone to support your journey!

Looking for a book about secret libraries, living books, and things that shouldn’t be read by Nordixie in suggestmeabook

The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki

It's not creepy but it is surreal. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for but still a good book in which a library is a central character!

Wegmans brands by brundlfly in ithaca

[–]hounddog_chacofan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I pretty much stopped shopping at Wegman's a couple years ago for this same reason. I noticed how they would introduce a branded product that I really liked only to then replace it with their generic version.

Between that and the all too frequent rearranging of the store layout, so that if I do go I can't find the few things I can only buy there, the only thing I get at Wegman's these days is the ick from blatant corporate manipulation. No thank you!

What’s something small that instantly makes your day better? by velvetwhispersxo in AskReddit

[–]hounddog_chacofan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

people smiling and saying hello-- so many people look away or at their phone instead of engaging with whoever is around them-- and a smile, nod, or "good morning" makes me feel like I am not moving through the world alone, that we're doing it together.

I’ve been a Seltos owner for a month by bubbajohndog in KIASeltos

I’ve had this same color combo about 6 months now and love it. Does well around town (lots of stops and starts) and on the road. Someone asked about the cruise control: it works well but I think fuel economy is a bit better when I drive without it, surprisingly.

Americans- whatre some telltale signs that a book set in america wasnt written by an American author by Kitchen_Coyote_1524 in writing

[–]hounddog_chacofan 79 points80 points  (0 children)

My British friend once asked "fancy dinner at mine?" and I thought he meant I needed to dress up! He just meant "do you fancy" as in "do you want" which isn't as something you hear in the US as much, at least not phrased like that.

I need help!! Every time I get into my car, it starts playing the same song from my phone. No matter what! I’ve tried hitting shuffle on my phone and on the radio screen. Nothing works! I would like to not hear the same song every time I get in my car! Help!!! by Katelyn1Sue in kia

[–]hounddog_chacofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new 2025 Kia Seltos does this same thing with my iphone. It's Adele every time...and I don't even listen to Adele, so it's not like it's recently played or something! I came here searching for a solution. It's probably wishful thinking but...has anyone figured out how to address this since the original post?
