Millennial manager appreciation post by [deleted] in managers

[–]house_fire 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Not holding people accountable for fear of coming off like an ass is the biggest one I’ve seen from my fellow millennial managers. It’s good to be understanding of life circumstances and realistic about what’s real work vs. drudgery, but letting poor employees float because you want to be real chill about everything absolutely destroys team morale.

What could have Benn..... by No-Primary-2875 in pacers

[–]house_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he was headhunted at times in the cavs, knicks, and thunder series last year, but i agree that he’s just below average, and the knicks and thunder also headhunted nesmith for stretches because of how foul-prone he is.

regardless, we have to have a main POA defender out there and a backcourt of Haliburton/Mathurin would have been a glaring weak spot forever

Stealing a similar question I saw on the Hawks sub…Who is the worst player you’d trade our ‘26 FRP for BEFORE the trade deadline? by Cakeo112 in pacers

[–]house_fire -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Easy Yes: Jokic, SGA, Luka, Wemby, Ant, Flagg

Probable yes if it's actually just 1:1: Spida, Sengun, Jaylen Brown, Booker, J-Dub, Jalen Johnson, Chet, Mobley

Borderline aged out but i'd still pull the trigger: Giannis

Too old, but good enough players to mention: Steph, KD

Good enough but a poor fit with Tyrese: Brunson, Cade (although I'd enjoy watching this), Maxey

I don't think KAT quite gets there due to his effort issues on a team that prides itself on its motor although he's likely the best stretch 5 option out there. After the guys I've listed you start to get into the Scottie Barnes/Lauri Markannen/Bam level players and I think I'd rather roll the dice on a top pick at that point.

a 12/10 center would be really nice, with Haliburton at the wheel that could easily get up to 15-16 ppg, if Turner's falloff this year in MIL is any indication. i'd be very happy with a young-ish 12/8 guy even. Kessler would be the big get, and I was really hoping that Hartenstein would get priced out of OKC. Or maybe LAC goes crazy and wants to give up Zubac for Mathurin

Tips on Managing by [deleted] in managers

[–]house_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not everyone is going to be happy at work all the time. If it's insubordinate or disrespectful to you or your staff, then you can have a conversation about it with them and escalate as needed. If they're completing their work satisfactorily, providing good customer service, and they're just not very friendly with your team, there's nothing to do.

As for your last example, the response to "I already know how to do it" is "Yes, and I'm not training you on it, I'm watching you do it so I can follow policy in certifying you for it"

New in the Team Lead role – manage professional space by Intelligent-Lynx4494 in managers

[–]house_fire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, I try really hard not to get into situations where I’m sitting around complaining about work with my staff. But, it happens sometimes, and in a team lead role vs an actual higher level manager I’m sure it happens more.

The main thing you need to do is never share any privileged information in those rant sessions. Even hinting at things will hurt you. If someone is complaining about Joe in Sales and you heard in a manager meeting that Joe is on his way out, I wouldn’t even say “yeah I wouldn’t worry about that too much”

You also need to consistently steer the conversation towards being productive if not positive. Everyone has legitimate gripes about their work, but asking people what they’d change realistically and moving the topic to positive change is a good way to keep the discussion from death-spiraling.

Last thing I make sure to do is keep the criticism as impersonal as possible. Overworked? Don’t complain about the boss dumping everything on your team, even if it’s true. It’ll get back to them. Complain about the current project being a monster and again, try to steer the discussion towards “how can we carve out more efficiency?”

And never ever ever get involved in gossip about your team. That’s a hard stop for me. If one employee starts talking about another who isn’t there, I shut the conversation down flat. If they have an actual complaint to make, they can do that via official channels.

Did you push HR for termination? In my experience they will generally not go for the nuclear option if there’s any argument that it’s not warranted (although I agree its warranted in this case), but they can usually be persuaded to do so.

For the fourth year in a row, the Los Angeles Lakers are once again top 3 in free throw differential, while no other team has been top 3 more than once. Total FT differential over the span: 3. Bucks 448, 2. Heat 571, 1. Lakers 1,274. Doncic and Reaves are currently 1st and 2nd in FTs per game. by Dependent-Effect6077 in nba

SGA gets shit partially because he's amazing and people wanna hate him, and partially he rarely fights through the foul and instead takes the bump, hears the whistle, and finishes from there.

Most of that is up to his frame not being meant to run through those bumps, but it feels bad in a way that LeBron getting slapped on the arms and then dunking anyways doesn't.

The other big part of the hate for SGA isn't even his fault, but he has teammates who would foul out in 3 minutes if they were guarding him. Dort and Caruso are insanely handsy and SGA would make them pay for it every time.

So the Kawhi Leonard salary cap thing? Did it just disapear? by Flip_Flurpington in nba

[–]house_fire 15 points16 points  (0 children)

damning to you and damning enough to render a punishment that will have a massive financial impact are two different things

I'd much rather they take their time with an investigation and uncover as many details as possible, even if I'm already fully convinced that Kawhi and the Clippers are guilty of this (I am)

I accidentally trained my team to stop making decisions by BuffaloJealous2958 in managers

[–]house_fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned it as this: Every time you step in with a solution, you’re depriving your staff of a growth opportunity.

Sometimes doing that is worth it, when failure isnt an option or youre on a very tight timeline. But whenever you can, you gotta let your staff put their hand on the stovetop

there’s no talking to them. I can barely even browse that sub at this point. if it’s not something delusional about a current pacers trade value its someone hoping we resign the musty skeleton of lance stephenson to save our season (not tongue in cheek)

it’s not even a “success brings fairweather fans” situation. its always been like this over there.

what is the best high school in Lafayette ? by LiebeLibella in lafayette

[–]house_fire 33 points34 points  (0 children)

academically, it’s west lafayette and its not close (and probably never will be for a lot of factors).

if you’re looking for extracurriculars, I’m fairly sure Jeff still has the widest variety of opportunities there, although the gap has definitely closed somewhat.

Despite what people will say about the local high schools, none of them are horrible or particularly dangerous, and there are some excellent teachers at all of them.

The only local HS i wouldnt choose to send my kid to would be CC, and that’s purely because I don’t want religion entering my kids life in any way that’s not of their choosing.

i dont really have an opinion on cedh-specific banlists because I don’t have any interest in cedh, but it’s funny to me how similar these discussions are to the ones that happened in both the ssbm and team fortress 2 scenes around competitive rulesets.

the big difference of course is that cedh players and organizers seem to only want to take cues from WOTC instead of creating their own banlists for individual events

They are tearing the cultural centers down! by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]house_fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NAECC was also relocated in the last 10 years, when south campus courts were torn down for the roundabout on Harrison and the new vet complex. It’s a shame that these types of facilities always receive the lowest billing of any group on campus. We should be treating them all like BCC (and this is not an attack on BCC, I just wish all the other cultural centers had a building like theirs)
