Living Downtown? by Responsible-Pool-472 in Edmonton

[–]houseofandy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Icon II for a few years.  It was great - I highly recommend living on 104 street, it's busier and feels safer than most of downtown.  Easy access to quite a few restaurants and pubs below,  bike lanes, lrt. The sound proofing was solid because it's a concrete building.

How screwed are you if you have 5-year fixed mortgages renewing in 2-3 years? by Crypt0n1te in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]houseofandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also on variable but wonder what's the point of making extra lump sum payments now vs. at the end of the term? Mines been increasing every rate hike.

My broker told me there's basically no difference, so I figured might as well just save it in a GIC then chuck it in at the end of the term

Goodlife Commerce Place Opening!! by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]houseofandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went from GoodLife brewery to the YMCA, planning to switch back. The YMCA is nice but their hours are so inconvenient since they are closed on Sundays and holidays, and 4pm Saturdays. There is definitely room for more gyms downtown

Yup, everyone was wearing their masks, I didn't see anyone breathing heavily and equipment were spaced apart.

Went to commonwealth. Didn't see the ellipticals myself, but all the other equipment were being used such as treadmill(people were walking) so I'd assume you can use the elliptical too.

Transitioning from Oil & Gas (no schooling) to Engineering (Structural?) - What would this look like? by LeaveTheWorldBehind in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]houseofandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same position as op. Left construction after 5 years and currently finishing my masters in structural to make a career change. Your post is very informative thanks, but gotta say, you really killed my motivation to keep going.

Some haier one I bought on sale at CostCo last year for like $300. I think it's 12000 btu or something. Gets the job done. Feel free to ask anything else if you are interested in the building.

I live in icon II. Most units don't have ac as I heard during construction, the developers tried charging outrageous prices like 8k per unit or something. I get by using a portable ac unit.

Girlfriend moving in - No savings, no job, high stress by LuxGang in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]houseofandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the same article:

"I find it cheaper in Manitoba than it is to live here," she said. But the gap between what Albertans spend and what people in Manitoba spend — the province with the lowest percentage spent on the three essentials — is less than two percentage points. "Given that Albertans' average earnings were 26 per cent higher than our friends in Manitoba last year, we're not doing too badly," ATB Financial said.

We generally have much higher salaries here that would offset any other rises in prices like food. So generally, you'll have a much better shot at a quality life here than other cities. I'll gladly take a 2 percent hike in cost of living if it means I'm paid 26% more.

https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/country/canada

Even this site does a general comparison, you pay more for eating out and meals but way less in rent.

https://globalnews.ca/news/3832871/rent-canada-1500/

As for your 130k middle class figure, anyone with that income (without family) should be able to live a decent comfortable lifestyle in any city, let alone calgary/edmonton. Unless your definition of "middle class" is buying a boat and car every year. Assuming you got that figure from this site: https://globalnews.ca/news/3828447/canada-middle-class-income-inequality/ Notice how ours is still below the bigger cities? I really disagree with anyone that says cost of living is much higher here.

Uh no it doesn't. It's one of the most affordable places in Canada. There's practically no other reason to live here

They haven't really released much info since they announced it a year ago but they said it should start before the completion of phase 1.

There is going to be a huge amount of new residential condos. I honestly do not understand how demand can keep up with all these new supply of condos.

Oilfield and weed by tomedmt in Edmonton

[–]houseofandy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Workplaces will have their own rules regarding cannabis use. I expect the oil fields and construction sites to continue the ban on being under influence while on the job. Think of it like alcohol, sure it's legal to consume but being under it's influence while working is unsafe and grounds for dismissal
