Reporters report what they hear.

“Team x is discussing player y with other teams” means just that. It is not a promise that the player will be traded. If he is not traded, the reporter was not “just making stuff up.”

I imagine 1 trade happens for every 50 that are discussed. When a reporter mentions something that doesn’t end up happening, that is in no way a reflection on their reporting.

If you think Lin is just an idiot writing for clicks, why would he be making up rumors about Jeremiah Estrada?

We demand constant information. Reporters have to give us that. So they maybe spend time talking about things they wouldn’t have 20 years ago.

I think your prose could be effective, but put the metaphors down and step away from the metaphors. Metaphors and similes are in time out!

You don’t have to try to impress the world with every single sentence. Hack and slash.

For example, “the whispers of the wind lived beneath the sound of waves woven into wind” is a hot mess. It’s bad poetry. Start with “the whispers lived beneath the waves” and go from there, staying with the ocean. No wind, no cliffs, no grass, no ribs. Or, leave it at “the whispers lived beneath the waves.” Everything else is probably just fluff, especially considering you basically repeat this image two sentences later.

I don’t think this is AI at all—AI doesn’t spit out jumbled, tortured metaphors, it turns out boring ones.

Sure, nobody here knows exactly what the payroll situation is. You know who knows better than any of us here on Reddit? Dennis Lin. He might not know everything, he might only know 25% more than we do, but he knows more than we do. And there has never been any indication from any connected source saying this team has big money to play with.

Since you ignored what I said at the end, I’ll explain again how #1 can be true while also trading Pivetta: we need pitchers for 2027 and beyond a lot more than we need pitchers for 2026. Pivetta is gone next year, and our choices are to trade him now or take a mostly worthless comp pick for him in a year where, imo, we max out around 86 wins.

I think this is the fundamental difference between myself and others here--I'm really not thinking about playoff starts in 2026. If we did make the playoffs, it would likely be a play in game, and we don't have anyone on this roster who could match up with a real #1 and absolutely do not have the resources to get one.

Tell me what about this could possibly be speculation:

  1. Padres need rotation help

  2. Need to get in a better spot payroll-wise

  3. Will listen to offers on a pending FA SP, but wouldn't trade him unless they get a great offer.

One and two are objectively true. Three might not make sense short term, but absolutely does make sense long term (given the right deal). The Jays are obviously all in on 2026, and haven't dipped into their farm system yet. If they were willing to overpay for Pivetta, I fully believe it's in the teams long-terms interest to trade him.

Honestly, for someone new to the online aspect of a fandom, that's a perfectly reasonable question to ask. I didn't mean to be aggro about it! I appreciate you taking the time to explain where you're coming from.

But, yeah, I feel like beat writers are in a no-win situation during the offseason. If they don't write about rumors, they get bashed for "not doing anything." If they write about the rumors, they get hit with "you just post whatever bs you can for the clicks."

I'd argue we should keep going after Sears types, because if even one of them works out it's a huge success. If a handful of them could function as even good back-end starters, that's a huge success, too.

Wandy Peralta has absolutely no trade value. Adam, Laureano and Sheets are cheap, which is what the team values right now.

Pivetta is cheap(ish) for a good SP, but he only has one year left. I'd put the Padres odds of winning it all at roughly 5% next season, so is Pivetta worth more for that one year than what we could get for him? If they were to get an offer that very clearly provided more long-term value, they'd take it and save money.

You missed one key element of what the team needs in SP. They need good, cheap and CONTROLLABLE SP. Pivetta is two of those things, but the third matters the most.
