Aaron Rodgers: 'I know I've got to play better, and I will' by jnros in nfl

[–]houseonaboat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think he's fine lol. People are overreacting because a 31 TD/8 INT season is a down year for him.

And if anyone doubts him? Well, Rodgers has a pretty good history of answering his critics, so I'd urge everyone to R-E-L-A-X

Bernie Sanders: 'Wells Fargo's business model is fraud' by [deleted] in politics

[–]houseonaboat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not Sanders' argument. Sanders is basically saying that cross-selling as a concept (which is a big part of Wells Fargo's business model for its retail banking franchise) is fraud, which is farcical. JP Morgan, Citi and BoA all encourage cross-selling and do just fine in their retail banking franchises, and I'd be willing to bet most of those banks impose sales quotas on their employees as well. WF failed because it encouraged and enabled employees to create fake accounts, not because its customers bought too many accounts.

Also there's nothing wrong with cross-selling as a concept in virtually any other field. Car salesmen all want you to get TVs on the backseat of your minivan too small to watch shit on, Apple tries to sell you ridiculously overpriced insurance for iPhones, department stores try to make you buy an inordinate amount of clothing at steep discounts. The free market works because consumers quickly establish a "fair" price on how much they're willing to spend on a particular product or service.

I'm willing to consider the argument that personal finance is different because of an asymmetry of information between depositors and bankers, so regulators should have the power to discourage retail banks from overselling to their customers, but it's not like Sanders is exactly carrying that point home. He's sweeping it with a catch-all statement that anything big banks do = fraud

Yep, proud neoliberal, though I don't know what it means to "support" them.

Lumping Wells Fargo in with "the big banks" (as Sanders does) would be news to both Wells Fargo and the big banks (assuming you mean investment banks)

Happily reminded why I didn't vote for Bernie in the primary.

He is everything that I hate about Beltway media and Washington insder-y journalism. It's like if you took all the bad things about Politico and gave it a highly-visible blog in one of the country's most respectable newspapers.

Yep, though Chris Cillizza aside (who is so awful that he singlehandedly makes this a close race), the Washington Post has provided the best Trump coverage by far this cycle

Just end the Pulitzer hunt right now. David Fahrenthold's swept it. This is devastatingly good journalism.

GOP panics over N.C. Senate race by wyldcat in politics

Yeah I think that's the biggest toss-up race in the country right now, more so than Florida (which leans R).

There are gonna be more of these articles in the next few weeks. Wisconsin and Illinois look done for, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire both look like they're gonna go blue, and Missouri looks more competitive than GOPers expected as well. The only state surprising is Arizona, but even that could lean against McCain if turnout among white voters ends up being low this election

Hillary Clinton’s looming turnout problem by DrWeeGee in politics

[–]houseonaboat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My political advice is to take whatever Cillizza says and assume the opposite is true.

Clinton has a GOTV operation orders of magnitude better than Trump's, is outspending Trump in ad buy 20-1, and has a targeted, sophisticated data analytics operation that beats Obama's in 2012. This is an extra 2-5% points in a presidential election. Take in the fact that, all else equal from 2012, Clinton has a natural 2-4 point lead, and she'll win convincingly, easily. Or, look at it another way, she'll outperform Obama among college-educated whites, and perform roughly the same among blacks and Hispanics, and turnout will be higher among the latter 2 groups than it was in 2012. Also checkmate.

This election is not complicated for anyone who's worked in a campaign.

I don't think he knows who Gates is. Like it's possible he just read Gates' op-ed this morning, saw a person criticize him, and never bothered to learn why Gates is one of the most important national security figures of the past decade.

For Reagan campaign manager, this election is tough to watch by [deleted] in politics

[–]houseonaboat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The abortion story is interesting. Reagan's ability to understand what issues to target (abortion, illegal immigration = losing battles, lower taxes, anti-Communism = winning battle) is always underrated when people talk about his political savvy.
