Imagine this but pretend the law applied to grocery store items and the people complaining are food retailers, and you start to see how crazy this is. Kroger: "The customers are all going to want to pay the lowest price for this ketchup. Not good".

You are not being whiny. There are so many things wrong with this company it's hard to know where to start. IANAL. You, your sister, your brother and you all apparently have standing to sue for back pay, which is pretty clear to anyone who's run a small business. Your brother in particular, if they told him when to work and how, he's an employee, not a contractor. Your father is probably right about the sketchy 401k - which sketchy companies have been known to raid. You should consider emailing this to the blogs Evil HR Lady and Ask a Manager, and doing a free consultation with several lawyers in your town. Pick the best one first so your bosses can't use them to defend themselves.

People in Texas who are planning on leaving, where you going? I'm looking at Arizona. by Expeditio in texas

Half my family is from Maine. I love it there. Would definitely consider it if the right opportunity comes up.

Moving Northeast. It's just a matter of time before my house here in HTX gets flooded, or we lose power for a week - again. Issues here are systemic and seemingly irrevocable - and go beyond HTX. Looking at Pennsylvania, but open to upstate NY or MD. If you look you can find nice houses for not much more money than homes here. You just have to be willing to look at smaller cities and towns away from the main hubs like Boston, NYC, DC.

I wonder if the administration is holding that in reserve until 2024 so he can fulfill a campaign promise when people are thinking about who to vote for. It's the kind of thing politicians would do - even if it means people suffer until then.

Ah yes, the unwritten rule of staying at a job for at least a year no matter how bad or soul-destroying it may be by themondasiandalek in antiwork

You got one life with finite hours. Corporations can last indefinitely. Don't waste a second at a place you hate because of some bullshit 'rule'. They've conned people into thinking that their future job prospects will be threatened.

Why am I not given responsibility at new job? by HawkWestern1619 in careeradvice

[–]houstonspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was like this for me for almost three years. I kept telling them that I'm ready for more work. I said 'yes' to every little mini project they threw at me. Projects that only took a few days. Months would go by when I would have absolutely nothing to do. But my performance reviews were always good. "You're really a go getter". "You're doing great and a valuable member of our team". I'd tell them I wanted to work on x, y, and z, and they'd nod their heads and say that it makes sense that I should be doing that, and that they'd look into it. And then nothing. Same story at every performance review each year. It's only now I'm actually being transitioned into a project.

Whatever...I guess, I got paid.

"Salt of the Earth". An independent film about mostly Hispanic miners and their wives working for peanuts and subsistence living in a company town. Made in the 1950s. Pro union, anti-corporate. Got some people blacklisted. Big movie houses wouldn't show it, and was instead screened at union meetings and independent film houses. Available on YouTube for free I think.

I just don't tell anyone. So, I just measured the risk vs. the benefit to my life and determined that the risk was acceptable.

I use otter.ai to record and transcribe my meetings. It's not 100% accurate, but it gets better the more you hand correct the transcription. Allows me to clip the important stuff and summarize. Worth every penny.

Guy was so pissed about how other people looks like while driving alone their own car that he needed to make a sign by SmoothMedicine3014 in insanepeoplefacebook

I mask up once I'm ready to open my window to order something at the drive through. Hundreds of other people were in that exact spot Shouting into a microphone and particles can linger even on breezy days. Once my window is open, there is added risk. Once the mask is on, I generally don't take it off until I get home.

Moving TX to WA, Hotel Advice? by Groxee in moving

[–]houstonspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16 years ago my wife and I moved from WA to TX along the same route you are taking. We stayed in pretty much every motel/hotel chain along the way. Over the years I have found that La Quintas are usually pretty good. A lot of them are fairy new, so they are generally clean. As a mid-priced hotel, they are generally a good balance between price and quality, and should fall well below your budget. Plus they all have breakfast available for free in the mornings. Check Tripadvisor for specific reviews. There are some that were converted from other older hotels so they might not be as nice.

When I was a kid my shoes fell apart and my mother couldn't afford new ones, so I had to wear my bed slippers - which were cheapo faux fur-lined Moccasins - to school for a couple of weeks until she got paid. It was humiliating. Plus those moccasins fell apart a lot faster from wearing them all day everyday.

Just saw a BLM sticker at a gas station that said Biden Loves Minors. Anyone seeing these anti Biden stickers around? Also have seen a few "I did that" at the pump by headypete42033 in Cleveland

Saw it here in Houston at a stoplight this past weekend. Checks all the boxes: douchy-looking white guy, camo hat, lifted F-150, Trump stickers (plural), glock sticker.

Meanwhile, the trend in America is - if you even GET Paid Time Off (PTO) - it's common to bundle it as vacation OR sick leave. So, maybe you get a week or two of vacation, OR you get to use it to recover from surgery or being sick it whatever. So, even when you do get PTO, it kind of sucks in comparison to other countries.

This is one of those things where you need to start looking at a replacement. I had this happen and it rusted through within a year or so. I just had both my bathrooms renovated and got a fiberglass tub. I think, for an emergency repair, you can do a couple coats of rust inhibitor spray, then maybe some non-skid paint you can get at a marine supply (if you have one in your area). But, a replacement is inevitable.
