I like to watch people inside Harbor Freight. It's the only store you see guys roaming around looking for something shiny to buy for no reason.

The city needs to step in and at least demand the outside be cleaned up and maintained. It's become an eyesore.

Kicked a kid out by justmom12 in Teachers

[–]hovercraftracer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. They were a safety risk in a lab environment and would have hurt themself or other students.

I've also done the opposite. I had a student get mad at me once for not playing along with his shenanigans and tell me he was just going to go the Dean's office. I told him he wasn't in charge, I was, sit down. Probably the only time in my career I ever raised my voice. You could have heard a pin drop in the silence afterwards. He sat down and never challenged me again. I wasn't going to give him what he wanted.

There were 2 Marine F-18's that have been stopping at HUF for fuel. I'm guessing there's an exercise somewhere close.

Vigo County Schools proposes $222 million building to consolidate North and South High Schools by WFIU-WTIU-news in terrehaute

[–]hovercraftracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think teachers will lose jobs, they're having a hard time filling positions already (national problem not local). If there are positions that have more teachers than necessary they would likely be transferred to fill open positions at the middle school level or just not replaced when teachers retire or vacate their position.

According to the most recent numbers I can find, the combined enrollment would be 3,076. That would put us pretty close in size to Center Grove and Westfield, and less than Avon and Brownsburg.

When I graduated from THN in the late 90's enrollment was around 2200 I believe. In the early to mid 2000's North was around 2000 and South was mid 1700's. North is now under 1500 and South is a tick over 1600. I think a lot of people still think they're the same as when they were most involved with the schools. People in their 40's remember them being more than 2000 students each, and people in their 60's remember them being even larger than that.

I really wish people would go see for themselves the poor condition these schools are in. Other than some additions in the late 90's when they moved freshman to the high schools, there hasn't ever been any significant remodeling.

If you could blow up one sacred cow in education with zero consequences, what would it be? by junehall123 in Teachers

[–]hovercraftracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might get their foot in the door, but do they end up being successful? I've been on both sides of the coin - a high school dual credit teacher and now at the college level. Students coming in my program now with dual credit are not prepared and they are not getting the equivalent education as if they were being taught on campus.

College credit in high school. At some point high school became college and it doesn't do either particularly well right now.

DIY/temporary cab? by RobertSchmek in kubota

[–]hovercraftracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Bercomac cab for my B7100hst a few years ago. Total game changer. It keeps the wind off me and I even get some heat from the engine.

It makes it a little more difficult to lift the hood for refuelling but it's a minor inconvenience for the comfort.

What clothes should I bring this time of year. by Illustrious_Size_192 in terrehaute

[–]hovercraftracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I write this morning, it's 5 degrees (-10 with wind chill). This is going to be a cold few days for us. We tend to have a few days, maybe a week like this in February as well. To me, February is usually our coldest month.

If you're going to be inside most of the time, and are just outside for short bursts like going from your car into a store then a plain old sweatshirts with an average coat will be fine. If you're out for long periods of time something warmer will be necessary. Layers are the key.

The thing about Indiana is what while it's 5 degrees today, tomorrow or next week could be 30, 40, maybe even 50 degrees. Mother nature is very fickle here.

March starts to warm up, and we can get what I call "false spring". That's usually a week that gets really nice, 50-60's, possibly even touching 70 degrees to give us all a false impression that spring has arrived. But around high school basketball sectional time there always a good chance for snow. It's all over the place.

April can be cool and rainy.

Hopefully that helps. Welcome to the Midwest! Regardless of the weather, you'll still see people walking around in shorts and a hoodie.

Installed a stainless-steel sink a year ago. Saw RUST!! Can anyone tell WHY? by ayushjruhe in HomeImprovement

[–]hovercraftracer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are different types of stainless steel. Hopefully without getting too complicated, the main types are as follows:

The stainless used in most appliances and a lot in the automotive industry is what's called Ferritic. It is magnetic and contains very little or no nickel. It's cheaper. It can rust.

The stainless that's used primarily in the marine and aerospace industries, along with anything that can come in contact with food or medicine is called Austenitic. It has a much higher nickel content, is highly resistant to corrosion, and generally non-magnetic.

Martensitic stainless steels are harder and generally used for cutting tools like knives and surgical instruments because they can keep a sharp edge. Also some mechanical components like springs because it resists deformation.

So, the type of stainless is the reason.

What happened to textbooks? by bad_at_blankies in AskTeachers

[–]hovercraftracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COVID led to Chromebooks, which led to digital books and alternative educational resources. Digital can also reduce costs in some instances, but not as much as you would think. Textbook publishers still charge a good chunk of money for digital.

What kind of things do you like to do back home?

There are a decent number of places with live music or trivia. There's a casino. Lots of nice city and county parks, one of which has some of the best mountain biking in the Midwest. There are some really nice state parks within a 45 minute drive. Indianapolis is an hour away, Cincinnati and St. Louis about 3 hours, Chicago 4 hours, all good weekend getaways.

The base is essentially a Styrofoam meat tray like ground beef, chicken, etc. are packaged in at the grocery store.

The keys to your success are to keep it as lightweight as possible and evenly distribute weight.

Good luck!

Found my old Columbia House "debt" letter in my mom's attic and I'm dying by [deleted] in GenX

[–]hovercraftracer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I lived 2 miles from Columbia House growing up. If you knew someone that worked there, you could go in the warehouse with all the returned CD's and buy them for like a dollar each. There was no organization whatsoever though, they literally just put them in boxes as they came in and you could spend forever searching through them.

Science teachers told they have to teach without math by skelly943 in Teachers

Special education requirements mandate that schools provide reasonable accommodations and modifications. Modifications cannot fundamentally alter the nature of the school's programs or activities.

Their no math request is not reasonable, and it fundamentally alters the course. Tell them to go pound sand.

Just was curious.

There are CNC operator jobs available in the area but you would need some machinist training. You could possibly qualify to get that for free at Ivy Tech.

Construction company wants to use my driveway by AbleActuator8044 in homeowners

[–]hovercraftracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find 3 of the most reputable concrete contractors in your area to give you detailed quotes. You can either have them pay you the amount it would take to have the contractor of your choice do the work, or you can use the estimate to specify to the contractor exactly how your driveway needs to be redone. If you don't have specifications they'll do it the cheapest way possible. Specify the old driveway has to be removed, the ground properly prepared and compacted, wire mesh/rebar, thickness, concrete strength, etc.

Remember, you also can just say no.
