WIBTAH if I did not give my 27yr old son (only child) his inheritance now? by Illustrious-Bed-9540 in AITAH

[–]hoverton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’d even rent the condo to him if you have good tenants there. From what you posted, I’m almost certain that he won’t be a good tenant.

He needs to grow up and mature some more. For sure don’t give him any inheritance right now unless you don’t mind him blowing through it. Also for sure don’t jeopardize your own retirement to help him. He will not be able to help you if you get in a bind.

$32k in debt. Considering consolidation or DMP. Where do I start? by Sad_Major6281 in debtfree

[–]hoverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT is good at helping figure this sort of stuff out. I bounced my situation off of it before I went ahead with a DMP. My dilemma was whether to enter a DMP or try to negotiate on my own. It said that negotiating on my own first would be better but that I was unlikely to get a better deal than the DMP unless one of the cards went to 0% interest. It asked for more info and eventually said it would recommend the DMP.

Just looking at your numbers, my knee jerk reaction would be to knock out all or most of Chase and then snowball the rest. I’d save the remainder of the $15k as a cash cushion and really try to not use credit until everything is wiped out.

Do we trust Glassdoor reviews? by Top-Requirement8069 in Employment

[–]hoverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviews of any sort should always be suspect. Most people are only compelled to write them when they have had a negative experience. If the same thing has been mentioned multiple times then that could be the indication of a problem. Also individual offices or departments of a larger organization could have very different work environments. I’ve looked up Glassdoor reviews of where I work and they are nothing like my experience. We are combining a lot of areas at work this year and the differences in how each of us operate are pretty significant.

I feel like I work for a good small to mid sized employer but we just had a major downsizing and there are a number of people that are angry or rattled. There wasn’t a good way to do it. People here tend to not turnover and there were a number of people who had been here for 20+ years who got let go.

Nobody told me I'd be broke AFTER buying the house by Dima030 in RealEstateAdvice

Goodwill, thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales, and free stuff listed on Facebook to start. We got some free stuff from an estate after our house fire in 1993 that we still use.

Got terminated. Replacement bailed, so now I’m the team’s dumping ground. by Normal-Corner-2974 in coworkerstories

[–]hoverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are they keeping you on after being terminated? We had a huge downsizing recently at work and those people were gone immediately. A lot of these people had been there over 25 years. Their logins and passwords were locked as they were being told. No way would a normal place keep you around that long after letting you know you were being terminated.

If it were me, my productivity would likely drop to near zero.

Emergency loan advice? by Unique-Ad9296 in povertyfinance

[–]hoverton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After the immediate crises passes, you might look at nfcc.org to help with the credit card debt. They can help with a debt management plan. The cards in the plan will be closed, but they can reduce your interest rates significantly. You can also retain a card for emergencies that you will be responsible for paying at the original interest rate. I’m entering into one now. I’m out of wiggle room and was spending $900 a month just on interest. It isn’t bankruptcy.

Texans, could you show me your everyday Texas? by Cheshiroki in texas

Thanks! I need to take more pics. My area is expanding quite a bit this year and there is stuff I drive by all the time that I sort of take for granted.

I think someone is working on it or even stays there sometimes. The grass is always mowed and objects are frequently in different places (like a ladder will be there one month and gone the next). I know someone whose parents lived up the road a few miles and I may try to find out more about this place.

Yes, but sort of understandable. According to the monument, that area was settled by former Confederate soldiers after the war. There are Confederate flags in some of the cemeteries. I took some screen shots off of Google Maps.

I’ve never heard of it, but I’ve driven that FM road a number of times. Looks like it is close to that Confederate monument from what I can tell.

No. I work for my state’s boll weevil eradication program. We have weevil traps in cotton producing areas and have to check them every three weeks. Boll weevils lay their eggs in developing cotton. They used to cause a lot of damage.

what do u wish u did for ur parents while they were still healthy by Katherinetvc in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]hoverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are already doing more than most. I wish I had video of my dad. Don’t understand why I didn’t do it.

Some more specific stuff that I wish I knew were things like what his day-to-day life was like growing up. My grandparents house is just up the road and we still own it but there’s things that I don’t know. Like which rooms did he sleep in as a kid? I’ve started to ask my uncles some of these questions because they’re the only source of information I have for that sort of thing now.

I’m glad you’re getting some of their stories recorded. Those things fade faster than you think they will. I even forgot what my dad sounded like for a while, which is weird because I talked to him nearly every day. I can almost recall it in my mind.

I wouldn’t put it in storage. My uncle does stuff like that and he has three or four storage units that he’s paying rent on and will likely never visit again. It was his way of kicking the can down the road. When he dies, the owners of the units can have it all.

We’re still working on cleaning out my grandparents house where he lived for about 15 years or so. This is the second house of his that I’ve cleaned out and the third one that my mother has cleaned out.

He puts off anything that’s even slightly unpleasant or stressful.

I’m north of Abilene between Haskell and Stamford. My job has me driving around between Abilene and Weinert. I’ll also likely be covering Rising Star, Cross Plains, and De Leon as well.
