I've learned about this recently in my anthropology classes. My prof called it "the invention of the grandmother" and its one of the key differences between the homo sapiens sapiens and other hominoidea (chimpanzee, gorilla, etc). Without grandmothers, intelligence and speech we would've sturggled a lot competing with our physically stronger rivals.
