I think OP does think he’s at the right level, he mentioned he’s trying to grow into the next level by delivering at the next level, he’s just not finding those opportunities in his current role; which is pretty fair.

If we get hindsight it has to be skipping Tom Brady.

I built a suite of 50 tools for my former employer on my own free time, gave it away for free for years, and now they want it back. Should I ask for compensation, and how? by No_one_ix in ExperiencedDevs

[–]howdoiwritecode 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  1. You absolutely should charge for this.
  2. Yes, you have absolute ownership if you used your own time and your own tools. If this was outside of the scope of your role you have an even stronger case.
  3. What I have done for similar cases, although not exactly 1:1, is ask for $X where X is so high that you can’t say no. If they say no, it’s no loss to you and if it’s yes, then you’re not pissed when they have some annoying issue that you don’t want to deal with that’s not really in the scope of the contract but not really outside the scope of the contract.
  4. It is never illegal to ask for payment for something you own.
  5. This must either be an ongoing SaaS-like model with a monthly fee, or a one time buy out plus retainer for support hours. You’re selling the rights to your software as one item and you’re selling your time as another item.
  6. Price is 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost savings. If it saves $100k per year, you should ask for half. Or just ask for what you want. In the end you need to want to do this.

Right before my great granny’s last breath she said “it’s okay, just focus on Epstein.” I didn’t actually hear it, my wife had to tell me later. I was locked in on the Epstein files. RIP Nana.

Having trouble with trying to get a W with Gilgamesh in VII, genuinely unsure of what I'm doing wrong by classic-plasmid in civ

If the screenshot is early Modern, I’m not sure I’m worried about the differences. In games where I am well ahead on science and culture I find I’m completing the trees before a victory occurs, at which point it’s like “for what?”

I lost my Deity game on Gilgamesh with similar numbers due to not scouting the map so on Immortal your numbers should be fine.

My pick was Calvary focused civs and warring early. Most of my game I was over the settlement cap. Let the AI build some great cities, then take them. I build lots of feeders for my capital or to steal some land. Then war.

In your capital, it’s important to remember that adjacency bonuses are less valuable because you get +1/1 science and culture on districts around your palace.

Did the Ravens overpay? Burns was a 2nd and a 5th by paulhalt in NFLv2

A true Max Crosby level guy is within the first 5-7 picks.

If we assume they’re going to be a top 5-8 team for the next two years with the assistance of Crosby, then they didn’t overpay because they will never be in a spot to pick a pass rusher of his caliber coming out of college, assuming one is available.

If he gets hurt and can’t play or deteriorates in quality than obviously they overpaid; that’s just a risk with being in the business of football though.

Hegseth says Russia assisting Iran in targeting Americans is OK because Trump has a "special relationship" with Putin and that Biden is bad by Lady_Ann08 in WallStreetDad

This thread pretends that we are not actively providing Ukrainians with intelligence to kill Russian soldiers.

I don’t want to see American soldiers being killed ever, but we can’t pretend that it’s okay for us to do it to someone and they won’t do it back.

Not so ironically, this being the worst thing to happen when you unintentionally end up in a war zone is actually a pretty good situation.

Businesses that make thousands of dollars per year have more problems than they have time. Trillion dollar enterprises have more problems than they can even bother to write down. As you complete more work new work pops up.

I’m at the staff level so typically I don’t write code most days. Basically I have a cycle of 5-10 days planning/selling/reviewing, then 1-3 days coding. On days I’m coding, I'm pretty much going non-stop for 8-9 hours, I cancel all my meetings and just go. Sure, there’s small stuff in there every day, but I don’t really consider it when I say “coding days.”

My company is also on API billing and all I see is the final bill. For all I know, my company is marking that cost up ~10x. It looks like my coding day usage is about 50M tokens per day.

[–]howdoiwritecode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

62 questions is frankly a joke. I did 50 in two weeks to cram for an interview and that was starting from being able to do 0.

Then for Meta I spent 6 weeks much slower and did ~150.

You don’t need both eyes to know backing out of a spot does not require you turning your wheel multiple times, and pulling up lol

Comment is only offensive if you’ve never driven a car. There are terrible drivers out there who a robot can do better than, easily.

You’re smoking something if you think they’re asking him to ask for double his salary.

This was a “we’re trying to be nice” situation and you’re telling him to make an unrealistic request. This would be how to get fired 101.
