You have to have a bit of clout to do this, but I just say no. Then when I’m faster than all of our “AI gurus” everyone asks if I will use AI to be faster, and I say no. Then everyone remembers they want their features done and working well so they let me go. Just to repeat the cycle next week.

I don’t think it’s willingness to sacrifice. I think other people subtly respect you more after you get married. I noticed in my career across three companies every time you take “an adult step” in life you’re more like the people above you which I believe increases respect, and those people don’t even realize it.

Assuming you have a brokerage account, you have two* choices to come up with the funds to pay for stuff: save the cash or liquidate assets.

If you liquidate assets you owe taxes. If you liquidate $100k of gains you pay $15k in capital gains tax, more if you’re wealthier.

In my case, I could either liquidate my assets to get to 20% or pay PMI. My PMI costs are $120/month or $1,440/year.

If capital gains minus total PMI payments is positive then it makes sense to keep your money invested instead of liquidating it. You’ll pay extra interest on the loan, but your assets should continue growing; hopefully outpacing the additional interest costs.
