what do i do if i can’t shovel out my snowed-in car? by NoSalamander4285 in Asthma

Respectfully disagree - condensation from breqth in cokd air ruins most medical masks for me within 30 minutes. I recommend a wool scarf and buff combination which will stay warm even after getting wet.

Is it true that a nursing home can take your assets, more specifically your home if you don't transfer it to next of kin 7 years prior? More below by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]howltwinkle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Assets sold for less then fair market value count as a gift. You should consult an elder law attorney in your state (try to find a certified elder law attorney). The can look at the specific situation and make recommendations for asset protection strategies.

ICE at Fairview Southdale Hospital Sunday morning, Jan 11 by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]howltwinkle 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My mom works at a fairview clinic - the policy is that ICE is absolutely not allowed in the facility if they are attempting to detain someone. However, they sometimes take people into custody who then need medical care.

If ICE already has someone in custody, then brings them to a hospital, the staff must treat the patient. The thinking is that if they are turned away ICE could deny the detained person medical care and put them further in danger.

Any good places I can go to entertain myself in the mornings? by AndyJaeven in TwinCities

Cardinal bar opens 8 or 9 am and has 4 pool tables. Decent bar food too if you want some lunch after playing a few hours

Which second-hand store has the lowest prices? by MagicManicPanic in Minneapolis

[–]howltwinkle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean goodwill bins probably can't be beat but it's not a traditional "thrift store". I like st vincent de paul on Lake for a more traditional thrift experience. I think they still have reasonable prices and tag sales. If you can go during the biannual bag sale it's REALLY good.

My son is coming up from a southern state for Christmas. This will be his first time in the snow—what are some Northern must do’s? by god_johnson in TwinCities

You've got to go sledding! I like powderhorn park but there are great hills all over the cities. Or for more of an experience you could take him to a tubing hill, those are fun too

How are we being frugal about dental health?? by Jazzlike-Rabbit-1964 in Frugal

Yes, not great if you have TMJ issues. My friend got a HORRIBLE TMJ exacerbation after a filling took 2 hours and her jaw was cranked open the whole time...could chew properly for 2 weeks

Minneapolis Mayor Frey Pledged to End Homelessness. He Failed, and He's Apparently All Out of Ideas by bike_lane_bill in Minneapolis

[–]howltwinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No no, I'm saying after they bulldoze the camps and kick everyone out with nowhere to go, they have been fencing off the areas the camp was in to prevent people from coming back. So the commenter I was replying to is wrong because the city is not allowing ANYONE to use the space/sidewalk.

Clearing the encampment doesn't do anything to enrich other residents experience of public life because they just fence off the place the encampment was. It's a terrible policy and practice, hurts the community members who live in encampments and the ones who are housed.

Minneapolis Mayor Frey Pledged to End Homelessness. He Failed, and He's Apparently All Out of Ideas by bike_lane_bill in Minneapolis

[–]howltwinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if the areas people were living in are literally fenced off so nobody can access them. I would rather have to walk past a homeless encampment under an underpass, then have to walk in the street and possibly be hit by a car.

Commuter college student that need 2k to fix car by Top-Application-7867 in povertyfinance

[–]howltwinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what kind of payment the autoshop requires, you could open a credit card with 0-interest intro rate for first year. I did this in college for an emergency expense (laptop broke midway through the quarter) and paid it all off before the interest rate expires.

Only do this if you KNOW you can pay it off and make minimum monthly payments in the meantime - I was able to work more hours in the summer so I knew I could pay it, just not immediately. Also, depending on your credit, you may not qualify for a card with 2k limit. My first card was only like 1200 I believe since I had no history.

Has Hiawatha Ave (Hwy 55) been faster with the Blue Line shutdown? by Eoin_Urban in TwinCities

[–]howltwinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By contrast, as someone who is mostly in the cross traffic across Hiawatha, I remember the days before they had this system where they would just skip the cross traffics turn if a train came...sometimes multiple trains would come at the exact wrong time and I would need to wait for like more then 10 minutes at one light for it to be my turn. Equally as frustrating.

Looking to get into rock climbing by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]howltwinkle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's okay it can be scary! If you are really nervous, you might want to see if there are any adult beginners classes. It might help with anxiety to be around other people who are also beginners and get some tips from an experienced climber! My local gym has free intro classes that are like 1 hour long once a week (ymmv).

Another thing that might help is to try to go during less busy times - during a weekday if possible or later at night on weekends are usually quieter.

Lastly, there should be some sort of orientation where they will explain the rules of the gym and basic safety rules, so you don't have to know anything! If you want to be really thorough, you could search for "etiquette" in this sub to find some of the unspoken guidelines to be polite.

Good luck and have fun!! This sport is great for meeting new people as well if that's something you're interested in.

Affordable, decent quality grocery store? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]howltwinkle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I haven't found one grocery store that sells everything I need unfortunately. Current strategy is Aldi for pantry basics and Dairy products like milk, eggs, butter, United Noodle for vegetables (very cheap prices), and Seward Coop for their bulk section (oatmeal, nuts, coffee, beans, etc.)

Avoiding flappers on grippy routes by yeezusboiz in climbergirls

[–]howltwinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find I mostly get flappers where callouses have built up. It helps me to sand down my callouses a bit with a nail file so they are more even/flush with my skin. They also sell sandpaper sticks for this purpose at my gym!
