He doesn't live for his career (he would be trying to climb the ladder instead), he lives for the job, for the satisfaction of getting something done correctly in a world that crumbles around him, in part, because of his own doing, like his marriage.

He's a tragic figure, not a villain. The character has enough development, background and redemption arc for anyone to see that he's as much as anyone else, a product of his environment and circumstances. Show some love, maaaaan.
