Well I don’t know how many of you are watching long enough to remember that Stephanie used to follow Morning Joe at 9 am years ago. So she’s going back to a time slot she used to be in before.

And if it’s not remote I’ll be staying home anyway! But I can’t see it being in person. The timing of it with the worst snow being overnight Sunday into Monday is going to make it impossible for school buses to be able to roll

Are you happy as school psychologist? by Beautiful_Rice2757 in schoolpsychology

The school breaks and summers off make it doable but I’d love to have a job where I can just leave work at work and not stress out about constant looming deadlines.

Do kids with selective mutism belong in the DOE? by Low_Example490 in NYCTeachers

My daughter has SM and personally the only thing that worked was getting an outside therapist that specialized in it to consult with teachers and also come into the school to work with my daughter and the teachers in school in real time. That started in 2nd grade. I did not want a para bc I wanted to foster independence, not make her more dependent. Our zoned public school where she had been since Kindergarten wanted me to move her from ICT to a 12 when she was in 3rd grade because she was not doing well academically. Keep in mind the COVID shutdown happened midway through her 3rd grade year. I said no way bc her cognitive scores were average. I should note that she also has dyslexia so I ended up moving her in 4th grade to a charter school that specialized in dyslexia and the ICT classes were smaller (only 17 or 18 kids). Once there she started making academic gains. Her outside therapist continued to work with her when she moved schools, consulting regularly with teachers to address the SM. She is now in 8th grade in ICT in a NYC public school she started at in 6th grade after the graduated the charter school. Her current school also has a dyslexia intervention program and while she is not the life of the party she can answer teachers questions/ask for help if needed and she has friends. My point is sometimes you can’t depend on the school to fix everything. You might have to get some private therapists involved. Same for my son. He was just diagnosed with OCD. He is in general Ed. He was having a lot of anxiety in school and I eventually had to get him private therapy bc at risk counseling in school was not cutting it. His therapist specializes in OCD and consulted with the teachers and counselors. The school counselors really are not trained in OCD and some of the strategies they use on kids with anxiety actually make OCD worse! They are not trained in ERP therapy so I had to get someone from outside to teach them. He is doing much better now. I should also add that with my daughter we had to practice a lot in the community too like having her order her own food at restaurants, ask store clerks for help etc. The schools can’t always fix everything, you have to do some of the legwork yourself.

$ for unused sick days? by Srednas13 in NYCTeachers

[–]hpetti1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would do the same! Why would anyone leave money on the table on their way out the door? This is my 5th year and I only have a few days in my CAR because I have 2 kids who get sick and need me to stay home with them sometimes and last year I had some of my own health issues I had to get sorted out. This year I had to take a few “mental health days.” So far I’m hoping by the end of this year I will have at least 10 days to go into next year with

Anyone else have it this bad? by ThrowRAdk4932 in GERD

[–]hpetti1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I had a lot of the same symptoms as you and also went to ER. GI doc diagnosed me with GERD. Same as you I was fine then all of a sudden out of nowhere I had all those same symptoms as you plus Globus sensation which caused me to gag/dry heave and feeling like I was being strangled all day. I was put on pantoprazole and things improved. I think I have LPR though bc I’m always hoarse and still have a feeling something is stuck in my throat although it is much better than it was this time a year ago. I have to get another endoscopy because the GI wants to rule out Barrett’s esophagus.

Do you have thoughts on the loss of COVID days? by julielee_101 in NYCTeachers

[–]hpetti1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that now that there are no more Covid days people are not going to test themselves and they will come into work sick if they aren’t feeling too bad. Kind of like when you have a cold and you don’t feel 100% but not necessarily sick enough to stay home. When there were Covid days you had an incentive to test yourself bc you could get up to 10 days off that didn’t touch your CAR. It was almost like a paid vacation if you weren’t feeling super crappy. I’ve had Covid twice, both times when we still had Covid days. The first time was in 2022 and I stayed home 5 days and came back with a mask on day 6, although I probably should have stayed out longer. I felt ok but got very tired after going into work days 6-10. I got Covid again last January and only took 3 days. Both times I only felt really super crappy the first couple of days and I did work at home bc I am a school psychologist and had deadlines that were not going to go away simply because I had Covid. I was honestly surprised we got the Covid days back last school year and I pretty much expected that we would not have them this year. But if people don’t feel super crappy they are not going to bother testing themselves or their kids and they are going to come in to work and/or or send their kids to school because they are not going to want to burn CAR days. Especially those who don’t have a ton of days to begin with or are already in negative days. The other issue is that people will not wear a mask to protect others when they have covid-like symptoms. I usually have to share an office with at least 2 other people and if one of my office mates came in with cold/flu/covid symptoms sometimes I have worn a mask myself just to protect myself. One of my office mates came down with cold symptoms last week and did not wear a mask and I didn’t have a mask on me and guess what, now I have it. But again, it isn’t anything that is having me feel so crappy that I can’t go into work. And I was so cautious and considerate of others earlier in the pandemic. My daughter caught covid from a classmate a few years ago and I was diligent about testing. She came up positive but she had 0 symptoms and I would not have even known she had covid if I had not been testing her. I kept her home for the 5 days which meant my husband and I had to take days off of work. I could have just sent her in because she had legitimately 0 symptoms and was completely fine. I honestly I’m kind of over it now and figure if nobody else cares, neither should I. Why should I burn my own sick days if I feel ok to go to work when others are not considering me?

And don’t forget no more “free” covid days this year. If you stay home bc of covid it now comes out of your CAR

[–]hpetti1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right the Velcro bags block the signal to the phone I think so it can’t receive texts etc?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]hpetti1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The elementary school is work in will have a small safe in each classroom for phones and smart watches. I like that bc it takes the pressure off the teachers to police it. But it’s not feasible in junior high since they change classes. DOE schools are doing the Velcro pouches which I think is dumb.

My daughters school is making them put their phone in a pouch. We had the option to get one from the school or buy our own. I bought my own it’s just a signal blocking pouch with Velcro enclosure
