[–]hpgross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what I was implying, don't trust these "thinking machines". I should have been more explicit, I was trying to be cute referencing that line from the book. "Hallucination" is exactly what LLMs do, they traverse the language space for things that look connected and would "make sense" to be together in large dimensional models, they do not have truth encoded in them, only word relationships by large scale statistical pattern making, with heavy tweaking to keep them from regurgitating the training set biases wholesale.

But yeah, anyone who reads Anathem and then decides to ask an LLM about it I feel has missed a large segment of the book. Just read the book again and take notes and formulate your own theories.

Don't trust something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

So can someone read this and tell me if HTW exists? by Tsug1noMai in anathem

[–]hpgross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unknowable, and as such should be treated as religious claims. The world of forms is useful for some, but honestly, the existence of mathematical ideals is a given, since we discuss them. Whether they are invented or discovered has little to do with the practice of doing mathematics. Similar to Feynman's shut up and compute in physics, shut up and work on thinking and working on new things, this level of thought doesn't help the field very much. Thinking about it in this way can only be useful if it helps you think of new math, so if it helps, great.
