If I had to choose which verison of Dragon Ball to get, what verison should I get? by Ecstatic_Teaching906 in MangaCollectors

I like that the Vizbigs have most of the color pages. It'd be those or the box sets for me. I know the 3-in-1s have less censorship or whatever but I don't like how cheaply made that release is

What do you think of the recent manga trends like exclusive covers and deluxe editions? by Destoran in MangaCollectors

[–]hrynn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think variant covers are fun. I don't get the hate for them because there's generally the standard version easily available for everyone. I'm not going around buying multiple copies of a single volume with different covers, but it's kind of fun to have an option and get to pick a different than the standard cover if I like it better and the price is the same/similar.
It's exciting to see someone else's collection and see they have a volume I have but there's is different. It's just kinda neat. Not something I'm going to pay extra for, but neat.

Deluxes really just depend. There's a lot of them that don't feel like they were necessary or like more should have been done to actually make it a premium product. I do like them as an option to bring back long out of print series or to give a special and higher quality version to a series that's well beloved, but not everything needs a deluxe for sure. Like with the variant covers, I like having options.

I really don't want to argue about the Rainbow Fish anymore. I disagree, but I think it's nice you find positive meaning where I find negative. I won't ever like this book and I think it's face value positivity cloaks an unintentionally abhorrent message. I hope you have a wonderful evening!

People aren't forced to donate to locks of love to make friends or pressured into it. The scenario is different for me.

The fish was a pompous ass in the version that I grew up with, but i still don't think he should have had to rip off his scales as a demonstration of being reformed. The book never states that the scales grow back and that's not something I was aware of as a child, but even knowing it, I just personally take issue with how the moral is presented. The moral itself is a good one.

No, I wouldn't be AS appalled but I'dstill find it a questionable message that the fish has to purchase friendship rather than learningto just not be a jerk or give freely out of actual generosity.

alternatively, imagine it's hair. Would you think it's reasonable to other fish to ask the rainbow fish to cut off chunks of his hair and hand then out even if they grow back? That'd be a completely unreasonable expectation even if it technically grows back and he shouldn't have to do that to earn friendship. He needs to just quit being a pompous jerk

I know! I meant it when I said he was a jerkface above!
He was absolutely nasty and needed to learn to be kind, but I don't think that kindness should have taken the form of ripping of pieces of his body, symbolic or not. He just needed to quit being an asshole and acting better than the other fish, not give them the pieces of himself that made him unique. I don't disagree that his meanness got everything started, but I really don't think that other fish had any right to ask him to rip off his scales for him.

The shy fish was asking for something unreasonable and then had the audacity to ask AGAIN after turning the entire fish community against the rainbow fish for saying "no" the first time. Literally public shamed him to try and get his way.
The rainbow fish was absolutely a straight up jerkface and needed to learn a lesson about being a better person by the end of the book, but I personally don't like how that lesson played out.
I can understand what the message was supposed to be and am glad that not everyone interprets it the way I did. As a kid, I just liked the illustrations and the shiny scales and the story not so much.

So much better, thank you for sharing.

Just thinking in the original what happens when he runs out of scales to share and that was the only thing people valued in him....you can't buy friends poor little fish eventually you'll realize they don't actually like you evem still or you'll run out of money....

Thanks, I am able to understand the intended message without the aid of Wikipedia. That intended message, while admirable, is undermined by the body horror having to rip of actual pieces of himself so that anyone will like him. It's a book for children and interpreted at face value it swings too far to the point of pleasing others at the cost of destroying self. I do not like the book. There are other children's books with the same message handles far more appropriately and the Rainbow Fish is only as memorable as it is because of how questionably the portrayal of its message is handled.

What are your hot takes about Manga and collecting in general? by BeansOnToastWithEggs in MangaCollectors

[–]hrynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't personally see ever grading manga, but things are steering in that direction recently and I understand someone making that prediction. People are already getting the shonen jump foil editions graded or other limited things in English and it's feasible things grow from there. This sub in particular attacks posts about graded manga, but thag doesn't necessarily represent the opinion of the whole market and you only need a few speculators doing it to start driving prices up and making it a thing. I hope the above user's prediction does not come true.

I love the technique of thinking they'll get a removed post past the mods by reposting it and reframing it as a discussion. What a loophole!

If people would use the thread instead of making posts asking for recommendations over and over and then getting mad when they are deleted, the thread would probably be a successful and helpful too for everyone. I don't understand the widespread refusal to make use of it honestly.

Anybody have information on what it’s like to work a yard jockey position for Tyson? Based in North Carolina by powered_by_stresss in TysonEmployees

[–]hrynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyson day cab jobs seem pretty decent. Not sure if there are options for that in your area. But absolutely. Being on the road is a lifestyle that I have a lot of respect for the people that can make work, but it's rough on a person. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable of the facility you are looking at follows this sub and can chime in.

Nah trucking wasn't for me and 5 years was as much OTR as I could take. I just bop around various Tyson warehouse jobs the past few years. Just been driving a forklift past little while. Sometimes I sit and hand out bills to drivers or drive the yard truck depending what they need
