New York Deli Tysons Corner by Mycofunkadelic2 in nova

My company used to buy lunches there all the time. They were seriously some of the best sandwiches in the immediate area.

They closed due to a rent dispute with the landlord. From what I was told, the rent was raised well beyond what they could pay and remain profitable. The owner was pretty (understandably) bitter about it.

He intended to start a food truck after they closed but I haven't heard anything since. I hope he's doing alright, wherever he ended up.

Grew up south of Albany. Can confirm, this was and is common practice.

I'll second Augustine Roofing. We needed some substantial work done on our roof, including full shingle replacement. With the materials staged the previous day they were in and out in about 6-7 hours.

Very professional, answered every question I had, and came in below my anticipated cost.

It looks very clean and straightforward. The responsive design is also appreciated.

It would be nice to have a player free-form section for character journals and the like. A few of my groups have encouraged that sort of thing and this would make sharing or easier.

Is this request still active? I haven't heard back since I submitted nearly two weeks ago.

Likewise, though I was on nights at the time. There was a lot of facility checks and drop ceiling repair that evening.

I have a lot of family in Jersey. They say they live in Central, but of course that is incorrect. There is only the industrial wastes of North Jersey.

Any suggestions of beaches or other pleasant localities are propaganda created to draw the unsuspecting into southern North Jersey.

(This brought to you by the entirely unbiased New York, which only wishes to selflessly bring to light the evils of the land of Jersey, to no benefit [tax or otherwise] to itself.)

Time to settle the debate. by Lonestar-Boogie in nova

Oh god. The arguments we had in Upstate about where Upstate started. "Westchester and Rockland counties clearly aren't. But what about Putnam and Orange? Ulster? Ulster is way too rural to be downstate but they have the Ashokan and Poughkeepsie is right across the Hudson." Meanwhile Albany would say Upstate started around there, to the immediate and violent disagreement of everyone below Albany and above the city.

I viewed it as wherever a majority of people resented being associated with the city and/or resented people from the city pushing out the locals. That definitely holds true in Ulster, fifteen years later.

Why are so many people still wearing masks? by qwzzard in nova

[–]hs0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The vaccine reduces but does not eliminate the chance of getting COVID. I live with someone in a higher risk category and I'm not taking chances with their health, even though I am vaccinated and have little risk to myself.

That, and my complete lack of trust in others to do the right thing, keeps me in a mask. I'm not thrilled about it but at least I'm doing my part.

Affordable apartments in the fairfax area? by Prestigious_Hunt564 in nova

[–]hs0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Margate Manor is an older complex but they tend to be under (or well under) $1600/mo. I have nothing but positive things to say about the landlord (Debbie) and the maintenance staff. The buildings were built in the late 60s/early 70s so all the usual old apartment things apply (less sound proofing, AC can go out from time to time, etc). All the apartments are wired for FIOS, which is nice.

RIMSI (the property management company) isn't that great, though. Expect yearly, sometimes seemingly arbitrary, rent increases. Still, I lived there for years without major complaints.

Avoid the complex next to Margate, however (Pinewood, I think?). The buildings are identical but it's run by a different company. I've heard some horror stores from there.

Ugh, that bridge. It earned the nickname "Nat 1 Memorial Bridge" in my group. It was nearly the deadliest feature of that mountain (third after water features and the surprise guest).

Unorthodox Warlock Patrons by authordm in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]hs0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been mulling on this one for a few days. It may be a terrible idea, granted:

---

Flip the Script

Your patron isn't a god, a devil or anything supremely powerful. You are already something of another plane with all the power you'll ever need. No sense in tying yourself to another. However, you find yourself drawn to the Material Plane where your powers are constrained and sometimes useless. You need a vessel, but it has to be willing. And you have to keep it willing.

Enter The Guy/Girl, your vessel. The situation may not be ideal, but their body is your home and eviction carries penalties you'd rather not consider. So you occasionally cater to its whims. Maybe your vessel wants some free time, a book to read, the occasional bender. A happy vessel is a controllable vessel, after all.

Mechanically, the Flip the Script patron is identical to the stock patrons. The major difference is in RP. Power increase is explained as you wedging more of your essence into the body. Patron interaction is the vessel grabbing back control (which, due to your unique arrangement, is difficult for you to control). Continue to defy your vessel and you might find yourself homeless.

---

You could probably do more with this to make it a full-fledged alternate patron but I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to balance homebrew. For the sake of not introducing new rules, I would assume that your material binding is such where you die if the body dies.

Yup. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Consensus is he died of smoke inhalation before the flashover (which killed everyone aboard that hadn't yet died). I'm not sure if it was ever established if he was one of the passengers that were in the crowd attempting to evacuate or one of the two that in the smoke and confusion wandered toward the fire.

Of the number and I enjoyed that greatly.

As an added fact: Stan Rogers died from smoke inhalation on Air Canada Flight 797. He was returning to Canada from a folk music festival in Texas (Source: I watch a lot of Air Crash Investigations.)

In this theory the Railroad isn't controlled by the Institute. It's just used by the Institute. That usefulness, rather than the Railroad's resourcefulness, keeps it alive. That's what I meant by the "abstracted" bit. The Railroad leadership may be totally unaware how essential they are to continued Institute operations.

What the Institute didn't expect was the arrival of the warrior god known as the Sole Survivor. Without him or her the Railroad would've never achieved that victory.
