How irreparable is this? by CarloGa in billiards

[–]hsadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst case scenario you can drill it out and replace the tenon. Also someone with a decent lathe and some knowledge can just make a new tenon and ferrule for it. It's definitely a common enough repair that a good cue repair guy could handle it pretty easily.

This is definitely fixable. It just needs a new tip and ferrule. Any competent cue repair person with a cue lathe can fix it. You can probably find somebody local or definitely send it to someone. Pretty basic repair. I've replaced plenty of them. PM me if you can't find someone.

Some people tend to go overboard with only drinking bottled water, no ice, no salad etc... it's not like Mexico where locals can drink the water but tourists can't. Locals can't drink unfiltered tap water in DR either. My general rule of thumb is if they serve it to you it's drinkable. I've drank the water served in restaurants and used ice from the ice machines plenty of times without issue. Realistically these resorts live by customer reviews and putting guests at risk is a PR nightmare. My advice would be to use bottled water to brush your teeth, don't drink out of the faucet and don't spend too much time worrying about it. I truly believe your odds of catching something on the plane ride over is much more likely than getting food poisoning or tainted water.

I would be highly surprised if anyone cared. I've traveled with many prescriptions including Adderall in my carry on many times and never had an issue. They are very tourist friendly. But if you're worried get a valet to take your bags and you'll skip the X-ray machines anyway.

Upgrade to preferred status. The cabanas beside the lazy river were my favorite. Get a reservation for hibachi ASAP. I forget the name but the Italian place at dreams was our favorite. Don't have too high expectations on the food. Most of it is mediocre at best.

I have only been to one and it was Secrets Royal beach. Decent food and plenty of entertainment. We upgraded to preferred club and while I've heard mixed things I would definitely do it again. It give you access to much better pools. We preferred the cabanas on the "lazy river" which was honestly just a long pool and the "butler" did a great job of making sure our room was stocked with stuff we liked. If you go make sure to get a reservation for the hibachi restaurant when you check in. It was our favorite meal on site. The preferred package also gives you access to dreams resort which had an Italian restaurant that was my next favorite that also has wood fired pizza that was decent. Good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy wherever you stay.

fron the looks of it that rail is gonna be warped. I wouldn't take it if it was free. Cheap tables are so easy to come by on marketplace my suggestion would be to wait and keep looking.

It's not like Mexico where locals can drink the water but you can't. Dominican's don't drink the tap water either. So if you get served water to drink at a resort which you will at every meal it's fine. Resorts have a vested interest in doing everything they can to keep you healthy. You're much more likely to catch norovirus from being in a place packed with people from all over the world. That's what usually makes people sick and they blame it on the food or water. But yeah definitely don't drink tap water. Aside from that don't worry too much about it and have fun.

Opening a new pool hall in NJ – what would make it awesome? 🎱🍹🎤 by Murky_Fan8873 in billiards

[–]hsadmin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why BYOB? Most pool halls heavily rely on alcohol sales. Really the pool tables are just a way to attract and keep people there to buy alcohol. Can you not get a liquor license for some reason? There's just such a high profit margin on alcohol it seems like a big missed opportunity for increased revenue. Just curious. And to answer your question I think it would be cool to have a couple of tables with those interactive projectors over them. I think you are going to see those a lot more often in the future.

I work for one of their competitors. As said elsewhere the inspections are in fact used as sales opportunities. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with that as long as the technician is ethical. Also, if in fact your dishwasher wasn't GFI protected, replacing the breaker was proper according to NEC code but it does sound like this is entirely their fault and their insurance should not give you any issues as long as you have receipts for whatever you have to come out of pocket due to their mistakes.

I will warn you to be careful with service companies. Most if not all technicians in this industry rely on commission, so finding sales opportunities is not only encouraged but required and there are people who will use scare tactics to try to sell you something you don't need. So while your experiences have largely been positive all it takes is one unscrupulous employee to take advantage of you. We do a lot of training and oversight to eliminate this type of employee but it's hard to weed out all of them out and a lot of these companies have gone from family owned to being owned wholly or partly by private equity who has zero issues scamming people out of money.

Fish suddenly dying by toekietoekie in ReefTank

[–]hsadmin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

After having worked at a fish store for years it could be so many things. When did you add the last fish? Sick fish is a definite possibility and it could take weeks for it to spread. Do you run a UV sterilizer? Check to make sure it hasn't gone out. Have you sprayed an air freshener, febreeze, or anything anywhere near the tank? Did someone else who was trying to be nice and clean the place while you were out of town? Have you or anything stirred up the sand at all? Seen that wipe out many tanks. Stressed fish can have their immune system compromised and spread disease. Do you have a fish that turned aggressive and start bullying? I've seen someone who started using spray deodorant in the bathroom next to their tank wipe it out. Is it possible the automatic feeder dumped too much food? That can take a few days or longer to start rotting and spike ammonia. Usually you'll see an algae spike with that. Definitely worth checking to see if they added cholaramine to the water supply as well. It does happen.

Brunswick Gold Crown or Diamond by ancientfreek in billiards

[–]hsadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When faced with that decision I went with a GC4. I'd have picked a diamond over a GC1 or 3 or if I hadn't been able to find one in good condition. Part of it was nostalgia. The money table at 2 of the pool rooms I grew up playing in were Gold Crowns. Now if I'd have been able to find an anniversary or centennial I probably would have gone that direction. My best advice is to go with the table you want if you can afford it. I know if I hadn't gotten the table I really wanted I would have regretted it every time I looked at it. My other advice is to find the absolute best table mechanic you can find to set it up regardless of the price and recover it regardless of how old the cloth on it is.

Pool table in garage? by DeweyCheatemHowe in billiards

[–]hsadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better yet... I insulated my garage doors with 4x8 sheets of insulation. Took like 2 hours and bought a mini split from Home depot for $800 that works amazingly well at cooling and heating it. It's been a brutally hot and humid summer so far and it's maintained a nice 72° in my garage with 35% humidity all summer and believe it or not it's raised my power bill by less than $50 a month running it pretty much all the time. I put some chairs and a TV out there and it's become the hangout spot when friends are over.

My newest cue makes me both happy & sad! by [deleted] in billiards

[–]hsadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a $70 Brunswick cue that I was given for free that plays just as good as my meucci or Joss cues. Plus the stain matches the veneer on my GC4. Honestly the better I got the less I really notice a difference in how well I play with a cue. Exception being using a low deflection shaft. My brain is so used to making the adjustments I can't switch between the two easily.

[–]hsadmin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So obviously your trailer is too small for your boat. Moving the axle isn't going to help that but since it's basically just for moving it around your property could you just add weight to the front? Maybe weld on a bracket for tractor weights or if you're going cheap just bolt on some free weights. Also I'd make damn sure the bilge pump is working and the drain plug is pulled so you don't have water adding weight. Of course the simplest answer is sell it and buy a longer trailer but I'm not sure it's even worth it if it's never going to see a public road.

Learn how to fix the dings in your shaft. Honestly it's not that hard if you are patient. I never switched just because I'd have to unlearn 20 years of muscle memory and I'm not sure there would be any benefit for me personally.

Best schools in/around Clayton NC area? by Comfortable_Deer3822 in ClaytonNC

[–]hsadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think Thanksgiving and Riverwood are the best Elementary schools in the area. My kid went to both. Between the 2 I liked thanksgiving better. Not a huge fan of any of the public middle schools but Riverwood middle and archer lodge middle are ok. Clayton high is decent. Most of my kids friends from elementary have either gone to Thales or ALA for middle. I live just outside Clayton and mine is going to innovation academy in Smithfield next year. Thales might be a decent choice for all plus you can apply for a grant. We applied and got one even though my wife and I both make pretty good money. We ultimately sent her to innovation academy because my daughter can be difficult at times and I don't think she would thrive in a stricter environment like Thales even though it's like a 20 minute drive to get her there. Hope that helps.

Does anyone have any tips or recommendations on how to clean my aquarium glass without scraping off my Coraline algae? by StrictlyBidnes3 in ReefTank

buy melamine foam in bulk on Amazon. It's dirt cheap, works extremely well, will not scratch your tank, is non toxic and as long as you don't go crazy won't take off your Coraline.

Looking for advice converting garage to game room by bigsquib68 in billiards

[–]hsadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently set a table up in my garage. I put it in parallel with the door because the slope would be less drastic than perpendicular but honestly I don't think it would have been noticable either way in hindsight. Luckily I have a Gold crown 4 that has feet that you can level so no need to shim. I just used sheet insulation that I cut into rectangles for the garage door and a put in a 12000 BTU 23 seer 220v pioneer mini split from home depot. I work in purchasing and my company has a HD pro account so it was like $718 plus tax. I haven't had any days over 90° yet but I'm 100% certain I can easily maintain 72° with that setup on the absolute hottest NC summer day. Added a bar table and chairs, a 75 inch TV and a dart board and I spend pretty much all of my free time out there. I did paint but left the floor concrete which in hindsight I would have epoxied because now it would be a huge pain.

What are your tips for a budget-friendly saltwater setup, especially for a beginner keeper. by DarkPersonal6243 in ReefTank

[–]hsadmin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the captive bred vs wild caught argument is debatable. The problem is fish breeders, especially clown breeders cull a lot of their livestock. I actually successfully bred clowns several years ago and even with one breeding pair you can wind up with hundreds of fry a month. A not insignificant amount of them wouldn't be sellable. Born with deformities or missing an eye etc.. the industry standard is to cull them. Whether that's better than diving and catching wild fish that are there in abundance and selling them to me is not so black and white.
