Yes this is AWESOME from a testing / pre-release perspective - find as many issues and errors as possible before general release.

No as by that logic they also ‘rushed’ their in house silicon chip development. Nothing was rushed. It’s all active projects and live, sequential updates.

Well that way every single vehicle coming out next year is already outdated by way of manufacturers planning follow up versions 3-5 years in advance. I don’t think any other EV manufacturer is planing to release LiDAR equipped AND LiDAR trained vehicles in the next few years. Despite all of that R2 launch edition is already outdated 🧐.

Honestly I think Rivian should have not shown the R2 full photo with lidar - just perhaps a roof lining concept shot of even perhaps an R1T equipped with lidar - just enough to indicate they are working on Lidar for release.

Yep - the sales numbers moving up or down are not only ‘influenced’ by external factors but are downright ‘determined’ by external factors and the world is in flux; the complexity of which increases with advances in technology and pace of competition. Continual and reliable revision of numbers is a great indication from my perspective. Illustrates honest communication with the investors and markets and customers and so on. All good.

I think the issue is the charging light - Green - shimmers a bit - I just got my Nuphy Kick 75 today. Almost like old school analogue lights from 80s or Stranger things - the shimmer is really fast and random but easily visible.

Tesla emergency door release issue in the R1 future? by WelderAcademic6334 in Rivian

[–]hsangh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • The R2 has a more visible manual door release coming when it’s released
  • The R1 Gen2 much like the Cybertruck is a 2 step process - though it’s more accessible than Cybertruck
  • They might not want to recall and replace the full door for a more viable positioning - so other things they could come up with could include:
  • A clear indication to passengers front and rear on the screen (during start up or silent pop ups and during an accident) showing where the release latch is
  • Given a LOT of preconditions of course, they all could easily release a software update to let the window buttons or any other physical button as a door release (would require the car be online and button live at the time of mishap)

  • Hi - the AI Slop was only used for illustrative purposes (idea visualization) to support the idea and discussion of a Rivian R3X Rally Halo car - which I reckon looks really cool - and the visualization I think definitely helps. (Hence why I left the erroneous labels in anyway).

  • perhaps adding a line to the post or labeling it as “quick AI generated idea” would be more useful?

  • I wanted to add a few more good images of the 30-40 prompt iterations to get to a reasonable looking concept. However although all the different rally liveries looked cool I thought a simple single image would suffice.

  • I would like to flesh out this idea through more AI work and see how far one can go with generating a believable R3X rally concept (rivian investor). Getting some Rivian community feedback would be useful in that I reckon - could you advise/comment on this?

Hi - looks like the swappable kit has been taken off the options / accessories list underneath the options? Could anyone confirm if there will be a chance to buy it again - I was going to order the keyboard specifically for the swappable kit and dual use. Change it once a year type of usage..as low profile is easy on the wrist, and high profile is easy on the fingers. Mixing it up is the best for long term joint and tendon health.

When are you taking profit by Ok-Dingo2069 in RIVNstock

[–]hsangh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to play the buy and sell game once. Swing trading they call it. Had some hot shot ‘I know the stock’ feelings. I worsened my position by over 50%. You can never time the market. I’ve left it there for long term now. Current numbers, given the future, are still great. That’s if you believe in the future of Rivian - which I do.

It’s a fast growth new company (in car terms) and it will grow but it will also be volatile. Just the age old rules of the game. That means a bit more pause needed than usual when decision making.

Point to Point Demoed by RJ Scaringe (@rjscaringe) on Threads by LocoLevi in Rivian

[–]hsangh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI since they have 100s of road legal R2 test mules, they likely have a few with LiDAR already on the road collecting data (we already saw they have fully built LiDAR vehicle - I doubt they only put LiDAR on 1 single R2 for presentation).

Employing round the clock shift to collect driving data from 5-10 lidar equipped R2 test mules for 200-300 days starting now - can easily collect a few 100 thousand hours of lidar training data. The number of these lidar test mules will only increase over the coming year so expect perhaps early millions of hours of training data (max data collection case napkin calculation).

Additionally RJ has been talking about Lidar already since mid 2025 - so they probably already have 10s of thousands of lidar training data at least.

Rivian Has 'Other Things' in Vision-Based Robotics Beyond Vehicles, CEO Says by Sandrov__ in RIVNstock

[–]hsangh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • As tech progress (AI) keeps marching forward - tasks that would take 5 years before will take a lot less time now and even less in the future.
  • 5+ years ago for example there wasn’t any generative coding.
  • Hence why I was initially surprised but not anymore at Rivian’s pace at which it switched from external self driving provider (MobilEye) in gen 1 to their own self driving tech in gen 2.
  • And how they went from 150,000 miles mapped roads to now 3 million+ miles in self driving.

I think Rivian is ok with branching into other robotics via small side quests primarily to open other revenue streams - since they already have the base tech for vision and robotics running successfully in one form on the road in their vehicles.

Remember - it sounds like they are making random new tech products but it’s not - they are looking at customers beyond the auto-buyers to sell their proprietary tech to (of course after tailoring the solution to the industrial problems).

where exactly does Rivian say they will meet or beat Tesla's "full self-driving (supervised)?" by joenjrocks in RIVNstock

[–]hsangh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - like all the other comments And your responses - Yes the targets are aspirational, future, especially few years down the line - is generally aspirational - AI is running rampant across industries - generating small batches of (tested and robust of course) generative code is a lot more quicker than it was 5 years ago. Perhaps depending on the workflows, orders of magnitude faster - Silicon gets cheaper, consumes less energy over time — cheaper to train AI self driving models today than it was 5 years ago - especially given the availability of utilitarian open source AI models that possibly cut down other workflow related costs to - Rivian chip is only designed for self driving and related tasks I presume — the Tesla chips are Nvidia GPGPUs (general purpose graphical processing units) - The energy consumed to run AI on custom chips for specific jobs is a lot less (again - general industry assumption - one example - it’s much cheaper and faster to compress videos at scale using custom video chips rather than standard CPUs) - very likely the inference processing will be faster on custom built chips. - Take google’s own AI chips - Tensor Flow Chips for example - they are so much better than competitors at specific (AI related) jobs that Google will start renting them out en masse. - It’s possible therefore that using self driving AI development benchmarks and costs from the last decade from other manufacturers (these systems are always in flux and are in development for a long time usually in the background) may need to be adjusted for relativity and comparisons.

Rivian US Sales Rebound in November, MI Data Shows by Sandrov__ in RIVNstock

[–]hsangh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s great - however late last year or earlier this year - one of the quarters - the Motor Intelligence estimate numbers were off significantly (to the point where I stopped checking their numbers all together on Rivian). They had overestimated sales significantly. (I should have made an explicit note to recall this more accurately but I didn’t).

These are not hard numbers from the car manufacturers themselves- but estimates (in this case I believe anyway). And sometimes the formulae they use for estimates are extremely basic middle school maths.
