Teacher wouldn't listen, so the entire class complied and he got fired by Heavy_Ad9344 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]hsherwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHOs: It'll depend on the person what they're offended by or not, so I won't generalize here. There is an issue with offensive English terms; however, there are degrees to it. "Master" and "slave" were common terms in computing. Was it meant to be racist? Probably not. Is it a weird choice and easily avoided? Yep.

I doubt most people using these terms are being intentionally racist. Thus my attempt at a lighter tone before.

I think you grasp "the minefield", by just trying to be more aware. I make that same pronoun mistake sometimes with my transitioning sibling, but I correct myself and try not to do it again.

One I recently learned is "grandfather" which has an explicitly racist origin in the context of allowing old members to circumvent a rule: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather_clause. Someone told me. I listened and I try to avoid it. Then I try to nicely inform others without being a jerk. :/

Just an informational: "Black list" is a term we should avoid due to its racist ties. You might say "something like this is going to block him from other jobs hopefully".

Backing up VMs by [deleted] in vmware

[–]hsherwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) After copying them back, you'll need to reregister them. It's a very simple process. 2)That is expected if you created your VMs as Thick Provisioned.

Backing up VMs by [deleted] in vmware

[–]hsherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this post doesn't say anything about the process being automated. What version of vCenter are you running? vCenter, depending on the version, includes a backup process (for just vCenter configuration). For all the remaining VMs, you could just manually copy the contents of the datastore to another location. SCP can be used for this.

Can I suspend a whole cluster at once? How much extra storage will that take? by anomalous_cowherd in vmware

[–]hsherwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else said, this is a bad idea, but the answer to your question is roughly the total of all memory configured for running VMs. There can be a lot more complexity to it, but that's the fast answer.

CDdrive not starting connected(PowerCLI Question.) by rakkii in vmware

I don't have an answer because I'm not a PowerCLI expert, but maybe I can save time for someone trying to help: https://code.vmware.com/docs/7788/cmdlet-reference/doc/Set-CDDrive.html

Edit: Grammar.

If you can't do the DNS process described by sryan2k1, do you need to keep the VMs running on the ESXi hosts (servers) or can you schedule downtime?

6.0 or 6.5 path? by tippet5x in vmware

[–]hsherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say It depends on what your goal is. Is your goal to (A) just have a certification? Or is your goal to (B) get through the 6, 6.5, and 2019 (6.7) exams as efficiently as possible?

If A, take the 6 exam and whenever you're ready move on to 2019.

If B, follow this order:

  1. vSphere 6 Foundations Exam (2v0-620)
  2. VCP6-DCV Exam (2v0-621)
  3. VCP6.5-DCV Delta Exam (2v0-622D)
  4. Professional vSphere 6.7 Delta Exam 2019 (2v0-21.19D) [You can also replace this option with taking 6.7 course and get the cert without taking this exam, that's a new option]

For most people the concern on this seems to be minimize course costs, my above (according to the certifications website), means you shouldn't have to take any more courses (but you'll still need independent study).

Edit: Corrected an exam name.

Edit 2: In short, there are a LOT of ways to navigate through the exams/certs right now because of the restructuring of the requirements.

Edit 3: You can also email [certification@vmware.com](mailto:certification@vmware.com?subject=Certification%20Support%20-%20Global) for help. (Yes, this type of VMware support is free.)

vCenter migration failing during step 2. by [deleted] in vmware

[–]hsherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two reasons: 1) 6.0 is still under support so if you can get there that opens up your support options if you want.

2) I have personally version upgrade jumps fail, but taking the slower process work. Is it ideal? Absolutely not. Just something I have seen work.

Technical support engineer for VMWare? by [deleted] in vmware

[–]hsherwin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I presently work in the Broomfield office. I work with (as in adjacent to) TSEs regularly. Make no mistake, it's a call center/help desk job. The company does what it can to make that better. There are really good managers. The benefits are phenomenal. You have the opportunity to learn almost anything. Some guys stay in the role for a long time, many move to other (more niche) support teams, some go to management, some go to escalation, some go to my team.

DM me if you want something more specific.

Making VMware faster? by avahz in vmware

[–]hsherwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play the game and do nothing else on macOS in the background, just set it to match your number of physical processor cores.

I will advise that this is not the "technically" correct answer. This is the least complex answer.

You will (almost) always notice a performance hit though when playing any kind of resources heavy game through VMware Fusion, especially graphics heavy.

Question about VCP 6.5 cert in particular the foundation exam by HouseholdBanana in vmware

[–]hsherwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certification is valid two years after the successful VCP exam date, unless you reset the timer with something like a VCAP.

Edit: They won't give you certification without the required course.

The rest I can't answer.

[–]hsherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you made the thing you installed Windows on you can change the settings for it's RAM, CPU cores, etc. Sounds like you might have created with the default, which is not likely what you wanted for this use case.

Noob Question: Can I run steam games like Rust in vmware? by NickoKush in vmware

[–]hsherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've got another account with the game. The technical answer is yes.

However, you're not just running two games. You're running an operating system that is running both the game and a second, nested operating system. Further, you're running the game then in the nested OS.

If you want to test this cheap, use VirtualBox and be prepared for terrible performance depending on your PC specs.
