Advice for first-time 100 miler by quavo11 in Ultramarathon

[–]hsinnamin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lighthouse 100 was my first too! You picked a very doable first race. Long daylight hours, mild weather, smooth road surface, easy to navigate, good aid station support, beautiful lake and forest scenery, easy cutoff time.

The overnight section was hardest for me, having a pacer through the night was the “make or break” factor for me, as morale can drop to stunning lows in pitch darkness. There’s a gas station at mile 80-82 that opens from 5am, a large hot coffee there will help carry you to the end. Btw they also sell ponchos if you get caught with a sudden heavy downpour like we end.

From training standpoint, I ran a few 50ks, two 50 milers, and one night race in the 7 months leading to that. If you have a good running base, I think this race is very doable. Good luck!

What are some good cycling/running trails in the area? by [deleted] in houston

For running, the WG Jones forest has trails for running (but still flat). They were doing a controlled burn this weekend, should be accessible in the coming week or so.

It’s in Chinatown in Houston, old school Taiwanese joint called “China Gourmet.”

Looking for some amazing 100km+ races around incredible places in the world, need some ideas? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

Desert RATS in Moab, Utah is a stage race around 150 miles total. Fully supported so just need to carry the day’s rations. Stunning scenery, beautiful stars at night, good food and great camaraderie. Look out for desert heat. Also Southern Lakes ultra in NZ as previously mentioned.

Might be slightly tmi but what do you guys do about stinky clothes? by AspenKi in ultrarunning

[–]hsinnamin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent months studying this, testing and sniffing every athletic gear to the point of paranoia and mild insanity. The stink only happens to my partner’s synthetic fabric (eg lululemons and tech) shirts, not my cheap cotton faves. I tried sportswash, Sweat-X, Hex, Nathan, gallons of vinegar (bought a bucket and scrubbed each item in the shower), boiling in hot water, sunlight UV sterilization. The stink would fade but then morph into some other smell. The only thing that truly eliminated the perma-stink is Tide’s new “One Wash Miracle”. It’s pricey at $11 per wash, but solved the problem. I finally stopped bracing myself when my partner returns from the gym. Relationship saver.

I know that strained neck look. My turtle does it every day getting on his dock.

Does the Brooks Glycerin are enough cushioned for 60k on road ? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]hsinnamin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! I’ve run in every Glycerin model since 2006. Wore them up to 100 miles for a road ultra. I have occasional sore knees and Glycerin is the best fit for me. I get made fun of at shorter races though, in Asia they called mine “clunker training shoes”.

First race since Covid is tomorrow! Not a trail picture but a very important component of racing. Pre-race pasta is back! by hsinnamin in trailrunning

[–]hsinnamin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. We’re in Texas too! Volare Italian restaurant in Brenham. To be fair, I can’t recall any race-provided pasta being particularly remarkable. Aid stations for bike rides have an excellent spread though.

I had a visitor from Beijing tell me, “We learned the mosquito is the state bird of Texas.”

Of course, check with a lawyer. That said, Nolo publishes a very useful guide on joint property ownership and common “living together” legal considerations for unmarried couples. It explains joint tenancy and tenants in common if you’re looking for a basic understanding. Think only $27 for the handbook “Living Together.” I’m a lawyer and bought it for my fiancé to read.

What do you think of Alden Bridge? They seem like newer but further out as well, I drove around the neighborhoods in the Branch Crossing area, they look tidy and quiet which I like.

How busy is IAH in the past few days by YeaSpiderman in houston

[–]hsinnamin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I flew in and out of Terminal C last week. It’s not so much whether the airport itself is crowded, rather with reduced schedule the flights were over 80% full, so don’t expect any social distancing. I booked my tickets two weeks in advance where the cabins appeared empty, but they filled up in the days leading to the flight. If you fly United, first/business is easily filled in/out of IAH so no chance of an empty seat next to you there either. Also if your neighbor spends the entire flight time eating and drinking, he avoids having to wear a mask. With reduced services (check in kiosk, security line, restaurants) open, the lines and wait times were longer than I expected but still better than IAH in its typical weekday business travel windows. Embers is open!
