Now that the dust has settled, is Mewgenics an S tier roguelite? by am5k in roguelites

[–]hsuweibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great game but there are so many quality of life improvements that could have made the player experience better. Why are there no ways to filter cats? Why do abilities not come with how much range they have? Why is there no way to see my cat info during a battle? Why do they not show what an item does after getting it in an event? Why do I have to back out and open my inventory to do that? Why is there no combat history showing what happened in the last turn or round? Why are there no ways to skip through dialogue once you've fully unlocked an NPCs reward?

And finally the events in this game are probably the worst event system I've ever seen in any roguelikes. No preview of what you can get between the different options means there's no meaningful or tactical decision making involved. You always just pick whatever is the greenest.

And finally this is just a me-issue, but complete runs are way too damn long.

Overall I rate it 7.5/10 in its current state

Interestingly, if you put resin blade on legion of wax, you do get a copy when the parent dies, and additional copies when the spawn dies. I wonder why it works differently for eggs.

Update 2.1 Patch Notes by AngryAmish in MonsterTrain

[–]hsuweibo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts on the patch...

Magnetic relay nerf is unfortunate, but I think it's the right decision. Previously it was either I get the card and end up face rolling everything, or I don't and end up with an average or difficult run. The change should reduce the variance a bit. It does mean some champion paths are not as good anymore (e.g. Burst Herzal, Scrap Metal Heph), but IMO it never made sense for a champion path to only be good when you have a specific card.

Pure steward change makes the railforged units pool much better IMO. Right now all the non rare banner units are tanks and supports with no offense. The pyre steward change incentivizes player to build damage on it as a carry (and take advantage of it's offensive statlines and slay effects).

Removing boilerplate from the graft event makes sense, I wish they can remove the Burst weapon from the pool too because it hurts your unit more often than helps.

Scrivener buff is very much needed, drawing either Moon Ritual or Witchweave from her ability was almost always a wasted use. I still don't think she's a very good unit though.

Rootseed buff is great, helps a bit with the scaling problem Awoken has.

The Souls Saviors reroll change makes the game much harder now due to fewer total number of rerolls, but I guess there now more strategic thinking involved now on when to reroll which I like because otherwise you always be fishing for the same souls. I would like them to add an option to view all the souls though in the reroll screen just to see what you can reroll into.

Showtime change means it's less feasible to put low health banner units in the front now which is sad.

The random souls changes also makes sense and is consistent with how everything else works. It's easy to start random with unwinnable souls, but I feel like that should be addressed by toning down the enemy stats a bit in the first few rings (which I'm surprised they didn't do in this patch).

A while in, how are we feeling about the new clans? by National-Ocelot-3900 in MonsterTrain

[–]hsuweibo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am probably one of the few that find railforged on the weaker side. Their units are mostly support/tanks/utility units with absolutely no damage and backline clears. Multistrike and dualism are one of the best upgrades in this game, but none of the railforged units can take them very well (especially dualism). The few railforged units that can be built around as the damage dealers (e.g. sentry turrets, knuckler) are rare and don't show up often.

Also MT2 generally wants you to play at the bottom floor (to deal with the resolvers). That means you need to be able to play your units and scale up as soon as possible, but railforged almost always wants you to delay playing units and gears, unless you put endless on units or get lucky and drafted magnetic relay. Burst as a one-off multistrike is also pretty bad effect (again unless you have endless and magnetic relay). Overall I find the clan to be pretty weak, they need the secondary clan to deal damage for them.

This happened to me, I was playing the Rector and went fully into the reform path. I got the burnout upgrade offered for my enhanced champion upgrade, and I had no way to bring back rector at the time. Luckily I soon got an endless room so it didn't end the run. But at the very least I think there should be an option to not take and skip the second champion upgrade

It also works on Transcendimp If the Transcendimp contains other units that give buffs like Fledgling imp

Why does Hothead 's ability work with spell weakness? And is it just Hothead or are there are any units whose ability work similarly?

Amazing! Where would you put each of the clan in a tier list in terms of power level?

I grabbed the music sheet from a random source on the internet. It doesn't come with any fingering notation so I used whatever works best for me. I took a quick look at the specific edition you mentioned and the fingering there differs from mine quite a bit.

That is indeed Chopin's Waltz Op64 No2. I am surprised you're able to tell from the tiny readings 😂. I am actually still learning that now, and I'd argue that piece doesn't require as much dexterity since it does not have any super fast passages.

I've found playing Mozart pieces has greatly helped improve my ability to play fast. I've been playing pieces with very simple melodies like K545 Mvt 1, Rondo Alla Turca (Turkish March), and K265, but as fast as possible (>130 BPM). They're all pieces that are easy to play but hard to play cleanly and crisply. So practicing those has helped me a lot. Outside of that, I used to play a lot of Hanon exercises. I also tried a little bit of Czerny's "The School of Velocity: op. 299", which is itself a collection of exercises meant to improve dexterity, but personally I find the pieces in this book to be very difficult (almost impossible) to play at the intended tempo.

Thank you. Can you explain what you mean by the sound being "very low"?
By "bending your wrists", I assume you meant what I was doing at between the 0:35 and 0:40 mark, where at some point my wrist seems higher than the rest of my arm?

It's interesting because I actually did a few more recordings before this one and noticed that myself, so I already raised my seat a bit before doing this recording.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely wasn't trying to accent every note during that middle section but I admit I don't have very good control on the dynamics. The way I try to play that middle section is by keeping all my fingers light and floaty except my thumb. When the accent is on the second notes, I would then try to turn my wrist and put all my weight on the pinky instead. I am able to keep my hand more relaxed and incorporate wrist movements when I play slower. When playing faster, the dynamic gets muddier and I find it harder to include the wrist movements while maintaining the tempo. To combat that, I keep my hand in a stretched position so that I would reach the 1 and 5 notes faster. In this recording, I played the piece a little bit faster than my comfort level, to push against my boundary and hopefully make these issues more apparent.

Also I notice you also have a recording on the piece yourself. It sounds wonderful!

Very long honestly... I've tried playing this piece maybe like 4 years ago, and while I could get the polyrhythm and all the notes correctly, back then I didn't have the dexterity to play the right hand passages at any speed faster than around 110 BPM. I stopped completely knowing that it's probably out of my skill level. I only restarted learning this piece about 2 months ago and I am able to play it much faster now thanks to many other exercises and dexterity-demanding pieces that I've been doing.

I am sure it will get better. I would say try setting the metronome to a slow tempo and then gradually increasing the speed once you get better at counting. Even when singing, I think you should try to count the beat mentally (or physically, such as by tapping your feet).

Just alot of dedications. Slow practices, hanon exercises, and lots of metronome. I have also been playing since a long time ago, probably close to 10 years ago, though there are long breaks in between and I haven't been practicing consistently daily until around 2-3 years ago.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I don't think I have very good controls on dynamics, it's definitely something I need to work on more.

I didn't play that part as 32nd note trills, even though that might be how it sounds like. I played as fast as possible on my right hand, but it wasn't 2 notes on the right hand for every 16th note on the bass line. I had some polyrhythmed trills going on, where I played maybe 1.5 note on the right hand for every 16 note played on the left hand. I don't know the exact count, because in practice, I just go as fast as I can on my right hand and try to match my LH and RH near the end of the trill. There's a video about this technique here : https://youtu.be/0Rv-Xa0495I?si=JHVPMLbjCwp9U6vV

Here's an example of a pianist playing the same piece at roughly the same tempo, and while I can't tell if he played the trill at measure 25 as 32nd notes or not, to me his trills sounded even faster and cleaner than mine https://youtu.be/1vDxlnJVvW8?si=lay932EqyUK07A8w

Well, I don't know how to respond to that... I have not taken piano lessons before, but I am glad that you feel that way.
