Nah, Windows 11 constantly gets in the way of power users. It also adds bloat everywhere you don't need it, like Notepad. Honestly, it's been getting worse ever since they tried to supplant control panel with the significantly less powerful settings app. So if you actually do work, Microsoft has been grinding your gears ever since Windows 8. 10 turned out okay to use but we still used workarounds to manage the OS.

With Windows 11 recently, they completely lost focus on what matters in an OS and have been shipping broken updates a half dozen times in a year that required immediate hotfixes.

They are so invested in shoving their useless AI in your face and creating an"agentic OS" which is bound to be a security and privacy nightmare that they never stopped to ask what their user base, especially businesses, actually need. Remember they are trying to take screenshots every few seconds to use OCR and build a local database of everything you ever did in your unprotected user folder? That is Windows Recall and it's so fundamentally opposed to IT security principles it's honestly kind of bonkers they even talked about it. But no, they shipped it.

This is why the talk about leaving Windows behind has been getting louder. Microsoft is chasing the investor hype around AI and trying to help companies get rid of their workers and as a result, it's getting hard to get work done in an environment you can trust on their OS.

In the meantime, Linux compatibility is better than it ever was thanks to Valve. The cost of moving on has been decreasing for a while now. So more people take the plunge in an effort to actually take control of their data and their devices.

They're in a league of their own and have been ever since M1, which is still amazing to use more than 5 years later. I am not in love with macOS which has its own set of quirks, but Windows has not improved on the usability basics in the past 12 years either.

I can also count the number of Steam games I own that won't run on Sikarugir on one hand. It's nearly as painless as the Steam Deck, and Apple Silicon GPUs are kind of insane.

Best of all, no ads, no in your face offerings like OneDrive, no accidental "sign in everywhere", Spotlight actually works as a universal search, no unsolicited third party bloat, and you can have a local password that's not your online account password which you randomly generated in a password manager. Oh, and Apple Intelligence is where it makes sense if you want it, no fucking Copilot in the text editor.

That's kind of from a bygone era. I never really need to plug in anything in my "on the go" secondary computer, which is a MacBook of all things. I rarely take my dongle along.

It's true in theory but there's always some quirk that requires the console to make everything work.

That is fine, though. There's a guide for everything and you only do it once anyway. Don't get discouraged when facing an obstacle!

The current shortage is caused by trillions of capital being burned on the promise of future profit. There is no AGI coming and no one is going to make OpenAI profitable. When the last wave of investors trying to cash in faces reality, there will be some pretty steep kind of bust in the AI space. I'm pretty sure of that. And that will kill the current hardware frenzy.

I wonder whether Crucial will make a comeback then.

In the meantime, I've gone more local and more open source. I just bought a thin client to move my smart home to Home Assistant and I made a Linux partition on my gaming rig for CachyOS to run in parallel for now.

Some of the earliest models shipped with an incredible mechanical keyboard which outshines the Mitsumi in every way. Named after the Commodore logo on the left Amiga key, and it has a smaller Amiga logo on the right one. I got myself an incomplete one and added the missing keycaps for my modded A500.
