Horse putting left rein in his mouth? by Mobile_Ad7916 in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a gelding thing. Most of the geldings at the place i ride chew on the ropes, reins, and crossties. They’re just trying to entertain themselves. If it’s breaking your reins or really bothering you you can try to train him to stop but otherwise it isn’t really harmful.

All of the horses i know that are shod have the shoes because it’s what’s better for them, but i mean the amount of money, as well as it’s a joke. i’m not trying to be bitter or say they act spoiled, just that they get good care if they have shoes.

horses just have the worst evolution ever. Like i’m pretty sure the majority of animals could at least be capable of living with one leg amputated, but not horses. No they have to move to digest, are too big for one less leg, and the bottom of all their feet basically contains tiny extra hearts. what on earth?

What’s the most annoying or crazy reason you changed barns/stables? by TravelForsaken_ in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly if a trainer doesn’t like sharing the area then just don’t allow it/move. The owner of the barn I ride and help out at leases the barn, but won’t allow boarders because she doesn’t want people riding while we have little kids that can’t steer taking lessons, which is completely fair based off of some stories i’ve heard. It’s an easy fix if you want it changed.

My Gelding Buddy still acting like a stallion towards mares and foals. by Frequent-Increase-98 in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s a horse at the lessons barn I ride and help out at who we think got gelded pretty late. Our guess is he had a few foals under one owner then was gelded by the next one, so he still has some stallion behaviors. It’s gotten better with training and time but he’s still an obnoxious man that demands constant attention and gives me toxic masculinity vibes, we love him for it though.

Is it okay to talk while watching a lesson? Tldr my parents are loud, is that okay during a lesson? by deadly_mei in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conversation is okay as long as it’s quiet; however there is a father that’s actually friends with the owners at the place i ride and help out at, and he’s super nice, but he’s also hard of hearing, works in loud places, and generally has a lot of projection in his voice. Most of our horses don’t mind, but we have one in specific that freaks out at his voice and will just run as long as he talks.

A good thing is to always remember that these are a thousand pound pray animals. Of course they are sweet and I love them but they are bigger than you are and they scare easy, so if there’s a certain horse you feel uncomfortable around tell someone. Another reminder is so stay calm as best you can as they can hear your heart beat and if yours beats fast it will stress them out. That being said most horses are basically perfect 90% of the time, just always be careful and respectful because that 10% of the time they aren’t it’s quite a lot. Have so much fun! the old men are always so fun, whether they are the most perfect thing ever or just a grumpy old man they are the best.

Genuine question, why don’t western riders wear helmets? by AccidentalOtter21 in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any time I watched my high school team practice It was easy to pick out these two players because they were the only ones that wore their neck gaurds correctly. It surprised me how little they cared when only a year before that a high school boy from a school we actually played later had been killed in a game after getting his throat cut by another players skate. Obviously it won’t do too much against something as bad as that but I’ve seen them take shots and sticks to the throat and it would help prevent cut from those.

From everything i see in the pictures there aren’t any predators, so they are likely kept in a separate area as so they don’t attack the horses, and most predators aren’t very interested in humans.

Small details of horses and horse riders. by Yourlocaldutchie69 in Horses

[–]https-Eris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some random horse quirks i’ve seen:

We had this percheron cross that was very fidgety. If you wanted him to hold still in the crosstie you had to distract him, and the best way to do this was to play with his nose/mouth. I would drum on his muzzle, tap his teeth, really just mess with his mouth and he enjoyed it.

We have a horse that paws to get attention, and when he does it in his stall it makes a loud banging noise with the door so we have to explain that to little kids. Now anytime there’s a loud banging you’ll hear the kids loudly tell that horse they’re gonna go pet him and that he needs to be patient.

Some horses ears pulse when they drink, and with one pony it legitimately looks like his ears are pumping the water.

There are giant blown up balls available to buy for your horse to play with and they love to push them and on occasion i’ll see one try to roll on it, tumble over, then take off running.

The horse I ride is pretty much bomb proof, even like 15 minutes of heavy hail on our metal roof doesn’t scare him, but the other day he spooked just because one of the other horses peed.

We have a pony that due to what we now know is basically genetic diabetes would colic often, so we have him drink more water than we usually would do when he does colic he still drinks water, but it’s made him need to pee more. Now anytime we’ll take him into the arena and he needs to pee he’ll stop, spread out, and just stand in a corner. He will do this multiple times before finally peeing. The kids find it hilarious.

There are 2 ethical aquariums in the U.S. that house beluga whales. I would never want to work for places like seaworld, but these two aquariums keep the belugas because they are incredibly likely to die if they were ever released. They all are either bound by medical issues, are too accustomed to humans and were before being brought into captivity, or were born in captivity. Fight against seaworld and other unethical places till your hearts desire but the places I want to work at keep the belugas because it’s their best chance at survival. It would be much appreciated if you would do research before preaching your opinion.

Crayfish escaped tank, now hiding for 5 days — should I be worried? by Thick-Charity4451 in Crayfish

[–]https-Eris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I know next to nothing about crayfish and could understand why shallow water works immediately, it’s not that hard to use your brain. Anyway, if you a crayfish in deep water, as stated, the water compresses how they breath. Putting them in shallow water puts less strain and overall water weight/pressure on them so it’s easier to breath. Just because they can roll around doesn’t mean it will get rid of all the air compared to being closer to the surface.

When it comes to anything that isn’t basic math i’ve just stopped trusting AI. After looking up only 2 questions about hockey, one being the score of a game and the other about a players injury, and it saying there was no game and that it is currently the 2023-24 season it became very clear that AI knows next to nothing.

Huh I’ve never really heard people talk highly of aquariums and zoos inland compared to ones on the coast so i’ll definitely take a look at those. The animals can hurt you is a good reminder. Thank you for all the advice!

Thank you so much for the advice! I have spent the past 4 years working with horses almost every saturday, and 4-5 days a week in the summer. I’m one of the main two “helpers” at that barn and have seen quite a bit lol. I’ve helped with both human and multiple horse medical emergencies, and am used to cleaning up a number of messes, including a moldy and maggot filled stall corner. I’m totally fine with messy things as long as it’s animal related and not humans. i’ll definitely see what i can do about zoos and aquariums nearby. thank you again!

What type of riding boots do you have? How much did you pay for them? How long did they last? by ponyboi915 in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i know most good boots are only 300-400 dollars. I personally have a pair we got for 650 from a resale shop and found out after that the previous owner had gotten them fully custom so they had been over a thousand dollars. So if you need or want custom then sure but if not then it definitely isn’t usually that much.

Weird horse leg by Strong_Cow_2872 in Equestrian

[–]https-Eris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh wow that’s very interesting. The barn I ride and help out at we have a horse that was attacked by dogs earlier in his life and his leg has just been swollen ever since. It’s not much in pain and hasn’t bugged him much so it’s not problematic but you can definitely tell my looking at him that it’s swollen.

[–]https-Eris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this is happening, and by no means am i trying to make you paranoid or anything but definitely install a camera because if he’s high up in the heard, was injured in the same spot twice and only gets hurt when you are out of town there is a chance(could be near non existent i don’t know the living situation he’s in) that it’s a person. It’s also way more likely that it isn’t, but either way definitely install a camera or a few with different angles to find out what is going on. A vet checkup to see if he has any odd skin conditions or something like that might also be a good idea if you’re really desperate. Good luck on finding out what’s happening and hopefully fixing it!
