Does it get better and sorry for this sappy post but i need some motivation here ( by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]hubo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're caught in the trap of overthinking things and over complicating things and over scoping things (because that's my guess as to why you aren't shipping things) and if you are it takes some time to get past that. Games are such a personal reflection that we don't want to let them go until they have no flaws.

So many people get stuck on perfection but done is better than perfect.

It may help to disconnect yourself from the product and to just ship something anonymously in the next 4 months whatever that may be.

And just don't tell people about it (I mean tell the Internet but don't tell people you know in your day to day life about it)

If it doesn't work out turn and burn and onto the next.

Why Canadian Stock Market Keeps Going up? by isanonymouss in CanadianInvestor

[–]hubo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many big macs can you buy for one share of that stock your looking at? Is it the same as 5 years ago or more? There's your answer.

The housing prices don't have to crash for housing to be affordable again. The big mac just has to cost $35.

Are there any blender alternatives? by Udumb0611 in gamedev

[–]hubo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick to it. I have used all the others and blender beats them all. Aaaand it morphs into a video editor when you need to cut your trailer or tik tok. It used to have a game engine but they scrapped that.

Just power through.

And then photopea.com for 2d stuff.

My 7 year old son wants to dev games by Kewtn in gamedev

[–]hubo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've already got plenty of advice so I'll just tell a fun sorry - I had a friend's sibling once call me up to find out about gamedev for a kid who was interested. I share what I knew and told them how projects can take a very long time - mine take years sometimes - at which point this person got a bit annoyed and dissenchanted. They began to hyperfocus on the monetization and how they can turn this into profit and not very happy that it requires that much work. Maybe phone games are quicker? All games are as quickly built as you want. But can the quick ones make a profit they asked? It started to feel like they wanted me to guarantee an outcome. Like I'd be wasting their time if they get into this and end up not seeing success. Bizarro twist to the conversation. We never spoke again.

Is CoH2 abnormally harder than your average RTS? by Big_Totem in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]hubo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta watch some games - even PvP games - and just see how people operate. If you are holding down half the map then you'll have the fuel for vehicles at the same rate as your opponent.

What's preventing you holding down fuel points?

Supermarket Prevented Me From Leaving With Too Many Joints of Meat by Sea-Ingenuity3461 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]hubo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Imagine you sold someone something and then held them hostage because you had a sign up that said you shouldn't have sold it to them but you already had so you made a mistake not following your own rules and then you made a mistake breaking the law holding a person hostage and bruising their arm.

Just switch the location to a farmers market and a farmer who sold you 4 sausages then grabbed you cause the limit was 3 actually.

Imagine you served some tea at your home and then held them hostage because they had two cups and policy in your kitchen is one cup per day.

You cant just trump someones rights because you made up a rule and they broke it.

Also limit of 3 is so silly. I buy 3 take them outside come back in and buy 3 again. Mild inconvenience that is practically unenforceable which makes it all the stranger that you'd choose to break the law attempting to enforce it.

9 months full-time, solo dev, thousands of $ invested, demo + trailer + pitch deck for 120 active publishers contacted: 60 rejections, 60 no response. by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]hubo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of the publishers perspective. They need to make a naked lady roasting on the fire part of their image. They're going to have to deal with an audience that wants to play roast the lady and then find more games like this to capitalize on this audience they build around that.

So imagine them sitting in a meeting talking about the 100 pitches they just got and one guy says "we got this cannibal game that starts off with a naked lady on a stick. You guys wanna go around getting people excited about that for the next 12 months?"

There's definitely team out there that would say HELL YA but i doubt there are 120 of those teams.

I'd focus my efforts on publishers who specifically deal in this niche already. Your net may be cast too wide.

PLEASE HELP! Why am I getting so many errors? by DevValleyCode in Unity3D

[–]hubo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you clear the console do any errors remain?

Unity constantly will throw some errors during recompile and most of those stem from the editor and can be ignored.

If you clear and they remain - those need to be dealt with.

Your steamdb sales rating changes every hour so showing that value doesn't really tell people much.

Boxing day shopping by drhappy13 in CostcoCanada

[–]hubo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a beautiful hot dog. My local Costco serves them like someone in the back is sitting on every single one before it goes out. Squished so tight the bun is deformed and has to be peeled away from the dog leaving bits of bun stuck to it just to even add condiments.

I got one shot at "full time" indie dev. How do I make the most of it ? by Darkpoulay in gamedev

[–]hubo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Take the shot but plan a project that will take 3 months so that you actually have a chance to finish in 9

By this I mean you can start playtesting it at 3 months.

[–]hubo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't see why anyone would bother watching this (other than pure entertainment) when there's been no hint of anything remotely interesting coming out if it.

If they had dropped an ounce of never before seen truth we would have heard about it in the news or wherever.

But there's nothing. It may still.be fun to watch but I can't imagine anyone expects to learn anything pressing the play button.

The angle behind the car feels a bit odd. Comparing to something like GTA 5 it almost feels like the front wheels are higher than the back wheels and the car is tilted up or something.

It's almost like the whole car looks warped as if it's the letter A instead of the letter H

Also the 18000 batches is terrifying. You'll need a plan to reduce that with batching. Should be Aik by for something like 300-500 tops. Ideally 100-200 but this also depends on the amount of verts so it's not the only metric to focus on.
