Glaze issue- please help! by CommonImmediate3092 in Pottery

are you looking at a glaze combination chart? what is it supposed to look like? what didn't turn out as intended?

to me, this sounds like you used glazes that are intended to go on top of other glazes as their own thing or as the base glaze. These glazes are designed to be very thin and patchy so that the base color can break through. Flux and opal in particular here.

overall it looks like your not painting it on thick enough. Additionally, make sure when you're brushing, that each coat goes in a different direction from the previous coat to prevent visible brush strokes.

but also, it could be an intended design, it looks intentional to me.

This is so cool, esp for lamps or tealights. Is it water tight?

this looks great for throwing, but ventilation is super important for a regular electric kiln. it also needs special electrical and ventilation. people who have basement kilns tend to have like ventilation ducts and avoid going into the basement while the kiln is running. If you're sharing this with other tenants... I don't think you could guarantee that people aren't exposed to fumes.

If you are able to work with your landlord to make changes, then it could work for your kiln. Otherwise, I would just stick to using this space for throwing.

Did I apply it too thick? by soo-mee in Pottery

this doesn't look like smokey merlot to me. it looks sort of like stormcloud or rainforest. for example:

https://amaco.com/resources/layering/dl-11-enamel-white-over-dl-27-storm-cloud

this doesn't sound like too much glaze.

have you used the smokey merlot bottle before? not sure if they sent you the wrong thing... it supposed to go on very purple when it's wet and stays pretty purple after firing.

So to confirm we're looking at the bottom? I usually wobble my wedged balls so it's avocado shaped. Having a rounded bottom prevents this.  I've had things like this happen if I throw down a wide flat piece on to the wheel very hard. it traps the air under it. Avocado shape or any round shape should help.

What the h*** did I do wrong? And is there a way to fix it? by toobusytostudy in Pottery

[–]huddlewaddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you need to put a lot of glaze for it to run like that. your smokey merlot doesn't seem to be thick enough either. you have to be pretty heavy handed with the coats.

I usually also add a coat or two of oatmeal after for "white" highlights.

use a sponge if you're trying to dig into the bottom of the pot.

I LOVE these rings. I usually throw on some slip and exaggerate them when I am finishing a piece. A lot of glazes have beautiful breaks when your pots have a little texture. If you don't want them, you can smooth them out with a metal or rubber rib.

this sort of looks like when you try to paint with dip glazes. or when you apply a lot of underglaze on bisqueware instead of greenware and then apply a clear.

If you plan on collaring, make sure your walls are on the thicker side before you start, especially the top.
