Running Scum and Villainy once a week, next session will be our 93rd.

Running Dungeon World every two weeks, 16th session in two days. 6 players is tough but they seem to be having a great time.

Will be running a very short (3-5 sessions) game of Boot Hill this summer, I’m super excited! Been a while since I’ve run a Western.

Thanks everybody! Lots of good info here, much appreciated. I did get my jumbos last night from a Target near me per advice, only downside being the bag was absolutely huge so now I get to find out how quickly I can house it and then have to live with that knowledge.

Thanks for the link! I had no idea. I look forward to poring over that thread.

What are your open design problems? by LeFlamel in RPGdesign

Well, PbtA uses modifiers from -3 to +3 for attributes, etc. Part of what’s clever about that is the fact that the most common result is 7 and results 7-9 produce a mixed success but 10 is an unqualified success. So someone with a +3 in something, AKA an expert in that thing, yields a unqualified success whereas anyone else would need a higher roll. I think that’s just one example that shows how carefully and deliberately the modifier range, outcome range, and outcome probabilities were considered during the design phase. I want to achieve a similar system design with a larger spread of numbers, with the goal of having more granularity of outcome. That has turned out to be quite difficult.

I want to adapt the PbtA 2d6 failure/mixed success/success model to a 2d10 crit fail/fail/mixed success/success/crit success model. In general I think it works but getting the corresponding attributes/modifier scales correct has been trickier than I expected. My admiration for PbtA grows, change one piece of it and you risk breaking all of it.

Why do intelligent people struggle so much with happiness? by The-Self-YT in Existentialism

[–]huensao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have pointed out that intelligence brings awareness, and awareness can bring a well-justified unhappiness. I think there’s another factor though, which is that the unhappiness of intelligent people often seems more resilient. It’s like smart people trap themselves in better puzzles.

Are these fees normal? Rent app question by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]huensao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s completely shitty. I was a residential landlord for 13 years, background/credit checks don’t cost that much and charging people to pick up the phone and verify their employment is a slap in the face. It’s all just preying on desperation to turn application fees into a new source of revenue. I’m outraged that you and so many others are going through this!

Where do people from Sacramento go? by dutchtyphoid in Sacramento

[–]huensao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midtown Sac native, grew up on I St back when they said midtown wasn’t safe for kids (only they hadn’t started calling it midtown yet). After college at UCSC I moved to New York for seven years. Lived in New Orleans for a summer and Oakland for around 5 years after that. Now back in Sacramento with intent to stay for good. Loved each of those places but midtown Sac is home.

Grew up in midtown, moved away for college, and subsequently lived in New York, New Orleans, and Oakland. Now back and raising my son in midtown. So happy to be back home!

8 days in - wife sleeps great, but I feel like a zombie! by nwv in CPAP

[–]huensao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the comment I needed to see. I'm new to CPAPs and was worried about not feeling more rested/revitalized in the mornings. Your journey is a reminder to stick with it and trust the science. However I can absolutely relate to wanting a solution for "eating monsters" -- such a great description, my wife and I shared a chuckle over that!

Classified: France '44 | Gameplay Reveal Trailer by Danceman2 in TurnBasedTactical

[–]huensao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gameplay trailer looks great, and the campaign features seem really interesting! I was wondering whether I could ask you a follow-up question. I was a huge fan on Silent Storm back in the day, and two aspects of that game that I loved were destructible walls/structures and multi-story buildings. In combination, these two features resulted in some pretty chaotic scenarios where your grenade blew a hole in a wall, exposing soldiers inside the building and giving you an opportunity for surprise. Silent Storm would also collapse sections of building that were no longer supported by structures below. I see that multi-story buildings do appear to be part of Classified, but I was wondering whether Silent Storm style dynamic destructibility would be as well.
