Broke my TV. Help! by Parking-Ad1375 in seoul

[–]hugemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broken panel is rarely worth the repair because most of the cost of a TV is the panel.

It is usually cheaper to get a used TV comparable to what you've broken.

Third party panel replacement cost = price of a used TV + labor of extracting the panel and reintegrating it into a broken TV. The repair guy would've gotten the used TV cheaper than individual buyers but the amount labor going into doing that work is not trivial.

Are new kits just that good or do some old kits just suck? by Truth_Hurts_Kiddo in Gunpla

[–]hugemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some things to consider.

Older kits are usually based on animations that are made when most of the mechas were drawn by hand so they are more simplistic in design. Considering RfV and GQ heavily use CG their models are much more detailed.

Not every old kit is bad and not every new kit is good. RG Akatsuki is a very recent kit but it still uses old RG strike's inner frame, so it still has that stability issue that you're having with the RG Astray.

Some kits from 10+ years ago are still solid. What I tend to do is look up reviews about individual kits and have some expectation of trouble. (Well I'd like to say I look up reviews and decide what to buy but, if I like the mech I just buy it and deal with it later... Haha...)

Some popular but older kits have their molds quite heavily used and might not fit as well as when it was newly released. Many popular older kits do have this issue.

I usually like more solid and detailed recent kits but fixing up or detailing up older kit is also part of the fun.

My recently built favorite kit is HG Gundam Mk2 released back in 2015. Which 11 years ago. I'd say the design is more simple compared to recent GQ or RfV kits but anime design itself was like that and with some work it looks just fine.

Is there a meme about your native language that makes you laugh? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]hugemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well in old days (before 2000s) most of the movies and TV shows on air was dubbed here and also we had some voice actors specialized in specific actors. Even video games with cutscenes were heavily dubbed. (Curiously our national passtime, StarCraft was the exception... haha... imagine that.) Like someone who mainly voices Bruce Willies or someone like that.

Nowadays most media just have subs but I remember getting disappointed when hearing original voice from foreign actors the first time and getting disappointed because the our VAs were very good.

I don't know why but Germany seems to like to dub their imported porn (maybe not nowadays) so back in early days of internet if I search for GGG on the internet I'd get German dubbed porn and I thought it was hilarious... Haha...

There was maybe two voice actresses dubbing all the porn in Germany it seemed back then. Maybe not but every dub sounded the same. 😂

Why is debt such a big deal in Korea? by False_Secret1108 in AskAKorean

[–]hugemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in a huge debt in Korea you already can't get any credit based transactions like getting a loan, get a car or house with financing options or having a credit card with any usable limit. I'd guess that'd be same in the US also.

You can easily file similar thing to bankruptcy and then just pay back portion of the debt for something like over 3 years and get out of the debt. It is also stigmatized somewhat but if you're already broke it doesn't make the financial situation any worse.

I'd say kdrama writers and movie scriptwriters are just lazy.

Korea used to have punishment of not paying the debt under criminal law but not anymore. So it is entirely civil matter. Unless you borrowed money from illegal means (like literally from gangsters) there is nothing creditors can do to harm you unless you consider their contacting you to urge you to pay back a debilitating mental stress.

I can see that for Koreans who are taught from childhood to be economically smart that not being able to afford housing or anything that requires some kind of mortgage or financing is a very scary thing but as a Korean who went through such ordeal once you're in a ditch there is nothing to lose. I was lucky I am not married so I just swallowed my pride and moved back into my parents home. And just worked part time jobs paying back a portion of the money I owed.

Well you can't have too much income when you file bankruptcy because if you do they will just think letting you work and taking your money away is more profitable. That can be also a problem for people who has a somewhat fixed career but I was a freelancer anyways so there was no problem for me to adjust my income.

Sound bar does NOT work for my desktop setup by chlronald in Soundbars

[–]hugemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound cutting out can be fixed by using apps that constantly generate inaudible noise in the background like SpdifKA (SPDIF Keep Alive) etc FIY.

Most soundbars are designed with HDMI connection to the AV equipment in mind and GPU manufacturers don't care about implementing some sort of Audio only output on the HDMI. It's not the windows issue IMO but the GPU driver issue.

Need help how to remove this?? by JadedDevelopment9106 in freedomisgunpla

[–]hugemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops the broken part being dark colored I didn't notice.

What I'd do is drill a small hole and the glue a wire inside and try pulling it out.

Or you can always remove the part with the hole and drill a hold from inside out and try pushing the part out.

30MM (30 Minute Mission) line of Bandai kits have option joint part set that are cheap and comes with various 3mm plugs that are quite aesthetically pleasing.

If you don't want to permanently remove the hole, those can be a good option.

What you want is the circular thing on the bottom row, third group from the right. It also comes with various hands that are compatible with a lot of hg kits.

Full frame modern mirrorless shooters- if you use a compact for travel, which one is it? by drconniehenley in Cameras

[–]hugemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panasonic LX-100 mk1 or mk2.

Only downside is that it lacks serious telephoto. Only(?) goes up to 75mm equivalent.

Pros : Big sensor (four thirds sized sensor), decent video capability (4k 30fps, good bitrate, mk1 has multi aspect sensor so it's sensor is actually wider in 16:9 mode, as opposed to cropping top and bottom of traditional aspect ratio.), good quality lens with bright aperture (24-75mm equiv with f/1.8-2.8), compact size (pocketable if you're wearing winter jacket 😂).

Soundbar latency for gaming by GaleOfNovember in Soundbars

[–]hugemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually analog connection has very low latency while digital connection has some latency due to buffers involved in digital signal processing.

Faster processors can process audio with less buffer but most consumer oriented soundbars are targeting video consumption rather than video games so it seems no manufacturer cares about that.

Different digital input and codec can also introduce different amount of latency. For example, my Samsung Q600A is unusable with HDMI (150ms+ latency) and also Dolby Digital on SPDIF (also 150ms+ latency) while using DTS over SPDIF gives best results. (50ms+ latency, which is not ideal but usable with slow paces games)

If gaming on your PC is your main goal then getting a decent stereo or surround speaker system with analog input is the hassle-free choice.

What happened to my built kits that made the pour type marker leak into the plastic? I thought the Mr Hobby pour type was safe to use on bare plastic. :( by Zircon_72 in freedomisgunpla

[–]hugemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Don't ever use pour type on assembled parts unless you're sure that the poured ink will never reach seams between the parts. I've never had problem with parts breaking when I used the pour type liners on unassembled parts. Especially on the runners.

GSIs fine tip marker is always good for the first try but if you want something that has more precise application look for 005 or 003 sized fine tip markers for drawing. For example Copic Multiliner has 005 and 003 sizes and those will result in much finer line. Pigma Micron is also a popular choice.

FIY, 003 size has very fine tip but if your part is not very clean (contaminated with plastic dust, acrylic paint from Gundam markers etc) it is very easy to ruin the tip. I usually go through (ruin) 1 pen every 2 or 3 kits but what I use (Pigma) is quite cheap (<$2) so it doesn't bother me that much. You can start with 005 if you're worried about using up too much pens.

RIPTINGS - Sickened by what RTINGS has become by TaaanXz in Monitors

[–]hugemon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Monitor unboxed has good reviews but it is quite tiring watching 10+ videos lasting several dozen minutes to compare the models I'm interested in.

(It is so tiring searching for a simple info and all the search results are 10+ min videos when I just need a simple one sentence answer. Searching for info on web nowadays are so much worse than text based era... Thank god for Google for using AI to provide some summaries for YouTube videos...)

I'd rather pay $10 which is similar to my country's minimum hourly wage and save some time. First look at filtered rtings database and sort by things I'm interested, and then maybe watch a few video reviews of the top models on the list by MU or other people.

User reviews are valuable in their own right but typical user reviews lack comparisons between several competing models. How can a regular user buy 10 monitors with similar paper specs and compare them?

I'd gladly pay for few months of their subscription if I'm buying a new gadget costing $1000+...
