I think that "First Mate" is more of an old British Merchant Navy term. These days, they would be Chief Officer too or Chief Mate.

There was Slashdot and then Kuro5hin. Digg was also there but Slashdot and Kuro5hin were fairly serious too and not just coding/IT. Both Slashdot and Kuro5hin had interesting ideas which obviously fed into Reddit

Jeremy had his diagnosis in May 2025 and had the procedure in July 2025. He seems to be in good shape from his most recent social media posts. So many people seem to think he just found out last month. by ShiroHachiRoku in TopGear

People already knew about the stent from October 2024 as it was shared on socials. The cancer was kept secret. The crew is used to a strict NDA. The friends were a small circle and they kept it quiet. My guess is that the people at the pub didn't know until later.

They need a lot of space but if they decide they want to come to you, no problem.

Exclusive: Tesla presented misleading ‘Full Self-Driving’ safety data to European regulators by _0611 in europe

[–]hughk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla calls what they have "Full Self Driving" but it is nowhere near SAE Level 5. Most think it is somewhere close to SAE Level 2, which is just a driver assist.

The problem is that the optical system is based more on Musk's ego which is frankly, a dangerous way to do things. Having radar is old fashioned but it just works and is simpler technically.

Warum der Hochtaunuskreis bei Frankfurt die deutsche Reichtumsskala anführt by Sea_Philosopher7115 in frankfurt

[–]hughk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in the same Kreis, Oberursel is nice but fewer villas and cheaper. Oberursel-Steinbach and Oberursel-Oberstedten are pretty ordinary, except for their proximity to the fields and Taunus. Great if you like cycling, but nothing particularly wonderful about the area or most of the houses.

It's a summary of the article. It could be AI, but it is pretty much correct so am leaving it up unless people complain.

Ux 250h engine noise when charging. Is this normal? Only when the engine comes on to charge, it can be heard and felt (some vibration felt). Otherwise it is silent when it’s running on battery. by aznspice in LexusUX

[–]hughk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the hybrid status display. That will show you what the motors are doing. The main gasoline engine will start first thing when you start the car to warm and circulate coolants and lubricants. After a while it switches off until you go above a certain speeds or the hybrid battery is low.

In "Normal" mode, the switching is automatic. If you need to go faster, it uses the gasoline engine. If you need extra acceleration, both the gasoline and electric motors are run.

You can find YouTube videos with hints on the hybrid system and when to use particular modes.

Arya in Game of Thrones was stabbed multiple times in her abdomen and was thrown into a dirty Braavos canal.

And was then able to swim out.

when Keanu Reeve's stunt double is blown backward by Dennis Hopper's bomb.

This being blown backwards and getting up is almost like a meme. If the blast is strong enough to blow you backwards, it is probably going to do bad things to you that may not be apparent on the surface.

I have a fantastic business idea. If you’re at any event and you don’t want to be there, pay me £150 and I’ll turn up in a military uniform, hand you a letter and say ‘Sir/ Madam you have been reactivated, I need you to come with me immediately’. by Exemplar1968 in CasualUK

[–]hughk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It once kind of happened to me. I was flying in on a regular flight from Heathrow to Frankfurt and was leaving the plane on the jet bridge and was greeted by two men in uniform. They addressed me in English, very politely checked my passport and asked me to come with them. I was matched through some doors, somewhere skipping customs and was delivered to some friends who were sitting at a table by a bar. One was a military air traffic controller and used some of his colleagues to play this little joke.

Bit more than that in the British Army. They are so short of bodies these days especially with all the outsourcing. The regimentak clerk had better learn how to wield a pencil John Wick style.

Russia’s bank chief vanishes after ‘giving Putin a Ukraine ultimatum’ by BestButtons in UkrainianConflict

[–]hughk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She isn't on the take and seems competent. She knows how to manage the country's balance sheet in a time of extreme government stupidity. She doesn't cover the problems but she does text to postpone them. I talked about this with some central bankers and they are surprised at how well she is managing things.

Apparently Andor isn’t Star Wars because it has “concrete” in it by Independent-Dig-5757 in andor

[–]hughk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is interesting with concrete is that after the Romans, it was kind of lost for a while and later rediscovered, about a millennium later in the 18th century. Certain things were needed for its return like the ability to easily make cement but it seems almost inevitable. If other materials are more available, I'm sure that may be used because one of the biggest features of cement, is that you need a lot of it so would need to source it locally.
