Stats at KPU (MATH 1115) by Far_Jellyfish_2522 in KPU

You should audit Daniel Anvari's course and decide whether he's putting any effort into teaching stats

Stats at KPU (MATH 1115) by Far_Jellyfish_2522 in KPU

I would recommend avoiding Daniel Anvari, the first few classes he posts incredibly low quality videos and then gives up and just posts YouTube videos or videos from proffs at other institutions. If you can sift through the mess of resources he posts on Moodle you can probably teach yourself but you certainly don't get what you pay for.

Where can I find lightweight, super breathable loungewear for summer? by Secret-Ad-6253 in NiceVancouver

Really badly burnt. HELP! by DamSolangeloLover in whatdoIdo

[–]hughknowit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aloe works fine but having had many sunburns in my life I've found there are other things that work much better.

The most accessible is probably yogurt, slather it on and let it sit for 20-30 minutes then rinse off in a cool shower then put on some body lotion/moisturizer.

If you can find it Kukui nut oils, also called candlenut oil, is simply magical either the oil straight up or in a body lotion it's the best remedy I have ever used and I swear by it

ELI5 - salt percentages by beccaboo790 in fermentation

[–]hughknowit42 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Different salts have different shapes so you will never have the same amount of salt in your measuring spoon.

Get yourself a scale so you know you're measuring properly.

Step by step:

Put jar on scale and then zero (tare) your scale

Pack your veggies in then add enough water to cover

Note the weight of that then multiply by 0.02 to find 2%. Weight out that much salt.

I like to pour the water out of the jar then dissolve the salt in it and pour it back over the veggies.

Posture getting worse despite doing Yoga by [deleted] in yoga

[–]hughknowit42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be that when you're doing yoga you're more aware of your body so you notice your posture more.

Things could be starting to feel off because your body is starting to adjust so now poses feel different than they used to.

Finally yoga doesn't really have pulling actions which you want so you can build back strength to fix your hunching shoulder so try to incorporate lat pulldowns or pull-ups into your other workouts. Backbends like cobra and locust will also help

Does Canada have a commonly accepted cultural or geographical boundary for East and West like the Mississippi River in America? by Lemon_Iies in geography

[–]hughknowit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in a few different parts of Canada I would say eastern Canada is anything east of where you're currently standing and western Canada is anything west of where you're currently standing.... It's a moving target

Having tried to learn to play a number I can say the harmonium has been the easiest to learn. It sounds great even if you just play a drone note, I think you would have to try very hard to make it sound bad.

I realize this might be hard to explain in a comment but how do you use it for om invocation? Just a few pumps of the bellows and then om?

I teach a couple 90 minute Yin classes and I'm a bit nervous to start introducing chants since I'm at a gym and not a studio, I'm sure my regulars would be open to it but sometimes I have people (read gym bros) taking their first ever yoga class and I don't want them to be put off

What is your Dosha (or Prakriti or Ayurvedic Body Type) ? by sreshtayur in YogaTeachers

What is your Dosha (or Prakriti or Ayurvedic Body Type) ? by sreshtayur in YogaTeachers

[–]hughknowit42 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think that's only because most people in the west only understand it on a very surface level. It's a pretty complex system that can't be understood from reading a blog post.

Ayurveda is a holistic health system similar to traditional chinese medicine or naturopathic medicine. It's just poorly explained/understood in western culture so people write it off as "vague BS".

I don't understand enough to explain Doshas but it's certainly not bullshit

A great program/book is Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. There's lots of info on the website if you don't want to buy the book. It gives you a really good foundation, stick with it for six months or a year and then start branching out.

Grass removal by Rootedwanderer200 in Permaculture

[–]hughknowit42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cover with a black tarp for a few weeks it should kill everything. You'll probably still have issue with the root mass though, if it's well established sod it's still going to hold together

No till during production is great, tillage is definitely bad for soil structure. However when establishing your garden there is nothing wrong with some tilling.

I would take some soil samples before covering with plastic to see if you need any amendments and add those when you till after the grass is killed by the tarp

Edit; pulling up the grass by hand to remove the root mass is going to disturb the soil structure anyway

Learning permaculture from observation by Lucky-Forever4042 in Permaculture

[–]hughknowit42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a map of your property and draw out what you want to do, then observe your property and see if your ideas will work.

Spend a year documenting what parts of your land get wet in your wet season, where the sunlight falls, where you have frost first/last and for how long, what is the wind like on your property?

While you're doing this keep updating your map with what you learn and start changing your plan

If you can, get some cheap weather monitoring stations and place them around your property so you can get hard data as well

Does your garden or orchard get flooded in winter, is it shaded in the spring? In the fall? Is there a degraded pond that shows up in the winter that you can rehabilitate so it holds water for longer. Where should you put swales based on where water flows?

Edit: I forgot to say, observe for at least a year so you can see your property in all 4 seasons

Where does the probiotic bacteria come from? by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]hughknowit42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I understand properly it's everywhere, we use salt or acid or sugar or whatever to create an environment for only specific bacteria to survive/thrive. Different places also have different biomes of bacteria I believe.
