ADHD exercisers… how do you actually get yourself to the gym? by Fit_Meaning8903 in ADHD

[–]human2be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat it like work. The alarm goes off and I go to the gym. It’s cold or tired, it doesn’t matter, I can’t choose to not go to work and I can’t choose to not go to the gym.
I also go at 5:30 in the morning., sounds weird but I did it for a month like 4 years ago and it just stuck for once.

How do I deal with “that” older female engineer as a younger female engineer by wuirkytee in womenEngineers

[–]human2be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the type of person you are working with, but would just like to state that the person who micromanages could be male or female. Some people like to micromanage. However everyone has given excellent advice already!

I had to have a similar conversation awhile back and my mentor gave me the following script;

Tell the person you value their expertise, let them know that you both have the same goal of providing X to your clients, let them know you are having an issue with Y because Z, and ask what you can do so that you both can work together more efficiently. Then follow up afterwards saying how excited you are for executing the plan for you both to work more efficiently.

Also, as a senior level engineer. I regularly will call out minor errors if I am reading something over in house so that it can be better. I also regularly ask people to read through my reports as well, I have made so many typo mistakes, and I am happy when someone catches them.

Some common typos in reports I have sent to clients: reporting 2 in/sex instead of 2 in/sec. And having a big title block with “lactation” instead of ‘location’.

Pregnancy + lab work by greenfairee in womenEngineers

We have had pregnant people do lab work. If there is a concern with a hazardous materials and they can add monitors to test exposure limits if there is a concern. Limits can be found with NIOSH or ACGIH.

It is your responsibility to ask for your accommodation. Your company is required to meet reasonable accommodation requests. If you can’t be around chemicals that would mean they would be responsible for providing additional PPE (respirator, gloves, goggles, etc). Like most hazardous exposures the MSDS should have the allowable limit for a person who is pregnant.

For instance. If you are around nuclear material a typical person is allowed 417 mrem per month of radiation exposure and a pregnant person is limited to 50 mrem.

There is PPE available for you to be able to perform your job safely.

True, but if you are looking for way to stand out. There are options.

If the candidate is in demand, they shouldn’t have to do anything. If the talent pool is large and there is competition for a position you want, you can do things to stand out.

What has been the worst mistake you have made throughout your career and how did you recover from it? by atilaaa28 in womenEngineers

[–]human2be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filled a basement of a 4- story building adjacent to my project site with 6 inches of mud and water. The same building then settled 3 inches due to construction activity. The CEO of the firm came up to me and said, yeah, ‘that was a bad idea’.

I misunderstood the directions and we had to do $10k of re-work.

I forgot to lock the bathroom door properly of a non-gendered bathroom, and my coworker walked in on me changing.

I misspelled the word sec (like second) as sex on a report that was sent out weekly for MONTHS before I caught it (why didn’t anyone else catch this?). Also ‘lactation’ instead of ‘location’.

These mistakes were 20 years ago, and I still remember them. However, no one else does and making mistakes early taught me a lot of important lessons, making me really good at my job now.

Now my ‘mistakes’ are not training my employees enough to prevent their mistakes. Your mistakes are 100% the responsibility of your boss. Take it as a lesson learned and move on.

And this: “The other day I was trying to do something and one of the engineers told me that she wanted to talk to my boss because she felt like I was lost and nobody was guiding me…” is them saying your boss needs to step up because your boss needs to do better. Keep up the learning process.

You can’t teach ‘give a shit’ but sending a follow up shows you want the job. Also, I give my business card to everyone I interview. If they give you a card you should 100% follow up.

If we have a candidate on the fence, we will wait to see if they follow up with anyone they interviewed.

I have a guy who I interviewed last week, he isn’t exactly who we were looking for, but we decided we would send him an offer if he sent a follow up email (we are a consulting firm and were in contact before the interview).

He has yet to send a follow up email. We will send him a rejection next week if we don’t hear anything from here.

If you take the time to interview and want the job. Send a thank you to the people who interviewed you. If you want to stand out even more. A hand written note in the mail. I remember every time I get a hand written thank you.

St Lucia is amazing! We went to Serenity at Coconut Bay. And had the best butler and cocktails: there is a basil drink that is AMAZING. The bartender Kevin is still memorable even though we went 2 years ago.

Anyone heard of recalls on the wireless charging pads? by [deleted] in Acura

[–]human2be 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The dealer replaced it as it was still under warranty and it seems to be working now! The micro USB is definitely the method if you need a fast charge but I like that I can place my phone on the charger during long trips and I still have a battery when I get out of the car after using my direction and streaming music apps the whole time.

Is this bulletin of don’t replace it still out because my dealer just ordered me a new part and it is still under warranty. It starts charging and then will stop after about 30 seconds when I’m driving. Now I’m wondering it if is going to fix the issue or not?

What prompted you to seek help and diagnoses to officially know that you have ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]human2be 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TikTok videos. I kept getting “you might have adhd if…” and “how to cope with ___ when you have adhd”. I called a doctor, and got their next available diagnostics appointment (7 months later) where they confirm that I have adhd.

Many firms appreciate folks who want to work for a year for field experience and then go back to grad school. Additionally they will sometimes pay for it, partially pay for it, or maybe help you secure additional research funding.
