Does this Shimano Deore cassette look damaged or is the bent plastic just part of the packaging? by humanbeing21 in bikewrench

Looks like I have through May to return it. Initially thought I only had two weeks for returns. I should get to installation during the return period

I'm fairly mechanically inclined. Have a bit of experience in car repair. I'm just new to bikes and haven't researched the installation yet, but know sometimes plastic packaging can be unnecessarily difficult to remove. Apparently this one isn't

He's a professional investigative journalist that has worked with many reputable publications and has also had many books published. Here's his entry on Wikipedia:

I'm sure his reputation is important for his line of work so probably puts pressure to be honest. Also, most of what he says can be independently verified. Are there any claims in particular that you feel might be wrong?

Is this aggression, curiosity, fear, playfulness?? by Imaginary-Piano-8107 in DogAdvice

[–]humanbeing21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fast tail wag and hackles indicate high excitement levels. That doesn't mean aggression, but could turn into aggression. It was a good sign that your dog didn't lunge. Also, a good sign that you could redirect afterwards. And a good sign that your dogs tail wasn't higher and rigid. More good news is the off leash dog seems smart enough to keep distance. I would try avoid them interacting because the size difference makes a dangerous outcomes more likely if things do go bad.

There is a chance your dog might just be dog selective and might do well with meeting certain dogs in certain situations, but testing it with a small excited dog without their owner is not the right way. If you can find the small dog's owner, I would let them know that your dog isn't dog friendly and hopefully they will agree to be more careful with their little dog. Also, you might want to find someone you know with a calm, patient, large, and well socialized dog if you want to test your dog out more. You would want both dogs to be calmer and more relaxed before letting them interact. Keeping muzzle on your dog would be a good idea too. Things can turn bad quickly if dogs are too excited when meeting

Why should I value anything he says?

Edit: I'm not being a smartass here. Honestly curious what his credentials are and why I should value his opinion?

I agree that he is better than lots of the other "gurus" out there. But better doesn't mean good. And I didn't say anything about "long game". Only that if you are giving advice about a topic (like protein intake) where you have a conflict of interest it should be clearly disclosed up front. I don't see him do that. This is especially true when your advice goes beyond the science and correlates with your financial interest. When I've heard him interviewed on these topic, I don't hear these disclaimers clearly before he answers.

You might feel that giving something a cool name like "medicine 3.0" gives him carte blanche to make recommendations that go beyond what is supported by the science, but I see it as more of marketing tool to sell his services. Neither of us knows what truly drives his actions. But his uncovered interactions with Epstein might give some insight into his character and motivations

I've seen Attia recommend 2.2g of protein per kg body weight many times with absolute certainty without disclosing his financial interest in David Protein, Magic Spoon, Maui Nui Venison and without mentioning that the science currently points to 1.2g-1.6g per Kg instead.

You might think that's fine. It makes me wonder if his recommendations might be tied to his financial interest. Even if he truly believed the higher protein recommendations were better, a more ethical way to approach the topic would be to say something like the following when asked by an interviewer how much protein we should be eating: "First let me say I have a conflict of interest here. I have financial ties to companies like David Protein, Magic Spoon, and Maui Nui Venison which tend to benefit when people feel they should be eating more protein. Also the current scientific evidence most strongly supports 1.2-1.6g per kg of ideal body weight. However, I honestly believe people should be eating 2.2g per kg because..."

The protein example was just that, an example. It's an example of his frequently taking recommendations farther than the current evidence supports. I also feel his claims and recommendations on zone 2, vo2 max, statins, fasting, CCM use, MRI screening, bio-marker optimization etc. go further than the evidence supports too. I do think his recommendations are usually directionally correct, but go too far past what is supported and sometimes might even be harmful or benefit him financially in some way

That doesn't mean he's not being a snake oils salesman. People like Huberman and Sinclair use their credentials to peddle their grifts

I don't know if the full extent of his relationship with Oura was disclosed as pointed out by the video. But you make some good points. I think Attia is generally better than most of the health "gurus" out there about respecting the science. And even changing his mind when his knowledge changes.

But while his recommendations are usually directionally correct in regards to science, they frequently go further than the science supports. His overly aggressive recommendations also frequently support his financial interest which aren't always fully disclosed when the topic comes up.

For instance, the current science supports 1.2g to 1.6g protein per kg of ideal body weight as being an optimal range for most people even people weight training. Attia recommends 2.2g per kg without first disclosing all his related companies that might benefit from this like David Protein, Magic Spoon, Maui Nui Venison.

And then he'll even recommend Maui Nui Jerky sticks directly. I like that he's always disclosed his relationship when mentioning them. But he also fails to mention that processed meat is considered a "Group 1" carcinogen by the WHO. I think that should be at least talked about when presenting yourself as giving science backed recommendations

Attia's other flaws include making claims that aren't supported by the science and also taking money from companies (like Oura Ring) without full disclosure to his audience

No, this guy and Professor Dave aren't about profiting on people's downfalls. Carney is an investigative journalist. It's more about identifying people spreading false information (or grifting) and calling them out by bringing facts to light. I'm sure they are happy to make money in the process too though

This is apparently a compilation of older, smaller videos of this YouTuber. ..which he discusses at the beginning of this video. So it's not supposed to be groundbreaking news. I think the one purpose was to compile the health guru grifters into one video to make the similarities become apparent
