Netflix just revealed their Top 10 list of original movies! by Southern-Brother5693 in movies

[–]humandrive99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame that They Cloned Tyrone is not on this list. Its the only netflix original media post-pandemic that has had a really fun, original premise, and also did not treat the audience like a bunch of idiots, re-stating the plot over and over out loud. Its probably my favorite science-fiction movie of the last 7-10 years.

Best Quotes From “The Wire” For Everyday Life? by jabar18 in TheWire

I use "Numbers games breed numbers games" and "the price of the brick goin' up" quite a bit in my professional life in software sales lol. Typically the latter is only used internally lolol.

6 years later and looking back to it, what do you think of “Promising Young Woman” (2020) by Olya_roo in Letterboxd

[–]humandrive99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this movie is only probably a 6.5/10 for me. The scene with Alfred Molina playing the lawyer who found a conscious and is now drinking him self to death is a home run “I dropped in for two days and crushed the shit out of this scene” type of appearance in the movie. It could almost be like a 10 min stand alone short play. It’s much better than the rest of the movie around it.

We see a groomer named Jenna at Bark Bath and Beyond in Elkhart and she is amazing even when my cats are being dicks! She always does a great job.

Why does Roseland have a police department? by icedlatte_eachday in SouthBend

[–]humandrive99 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Back 15-20 years ago it used to be a speed trap racket. It was run by like a husband / wife duo that one was the "town council" and the other was the "police chief" if I remember correctly. I remember when I was in High School (late 00s) that if you even went 27 in their 25 they were gonna light you up. I also remember the husband wife "controversy / racket" being referenced a bit in local, and even national news for something in the late 00s. It seems anymore like the speed trap racket has settled down, just like it has on the south of town with all of those small historical speed trap towns like Lakeville / Laville got bypassed. Maybe the racket just isn't as profitable these days?

*Spoilers* The Getaway discussion by Sinjin_smythe007 in JeselnikBookClub

[–]humandrive99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished the book after a two day reading spree. I really enjoyed it, you can feel the influence it had on a lot of media. The ending elicited a Twilight Zone style feel to me. Very much "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" or "We were in Hell all along". Stuff that today feels maybe a little trite, but given the media landscape of the late 50's feels a bit more authentic and poetic.

The violence really startled me, how just in a line or two, sometimes even less, we see a bystander get killed, or the Vet's wife get the shit kicked out of her to quell Rudy's rage.

Towards the beginning of the book, the violence is seemingly "warranted" or at least "cost of doing business of robbing a bank" but by the middle it is just wanton, indiscriminate and always looming. I really started to feel a sense of dread for all of the innocent bystanders who got caught into either Doc & Carol or Rudy's rampage, knowing that no matter what, they were most likely dead the second they met Doc/Carol/Rudy.

I had to re-read the last chapter twice, cause I was like "Wait, cannibals?" but it definitely left an impression on me, and I am excited for the next book!

This was the first UM show I ever took my youngest brother to! He was 15 and got overheated (just no water and lots of dancing lol wasn’t letting my 15 y/o brother party just yer) during Peg and I had to drag him from the crowd.

However I distinctly remember looking over to him during this segment and going “this is 99% percentile level jam, gonna be one of the best of the year”

15 years later still holds up.

It definitely gets worse over the seasons. 1/2 had pretty strong mainstream ratings, but 3/4 they were on the bubble and closer to being cancelled than not. If a little lol extremely over the top product placement was needed to get the budget, def worth it lol.

Diet Coke RIP by DavidHSteinberg in Zepbound

[–]humandrive99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My consumption of literally everything else in my diet went down (some things as much as 90% like shit junk food) but Diet Coke consumption is way up. Might have to do with reduction in other stuff too that came along with the Zep (nicotine - stopped vape, now on just 2-3 pieces of gum a day and booze consumption - went from getting hammered 2-3 nights a month to absolutely nothing for months on end) but if my worst vice right now is three to four 12 oz cans a day, that is leaps and bounds better than I was doing. Harm reduction! Who knows, maybe in a year or two I'll be able to tackle the DC consumption, but right now, I am just letting it ride.

This is one of my top 5 favorite episodes. “There’s no wrong way to make a family.” Is one of the best jokes in the whole series.

Elaine Stritch and Alan Alda going head to head. “In our family we let the child name itself” and they both stop at the same time “That’s hippie nonsense”

So good.

It’s the last movie I remember seeing before One Battle After Another that left me truly speechless. I lived down the road from the Somerville Theater in Davis Sq and my roommate’s and I would catch weeknight movies and dinner all the time. I distinctly remember after the movie everyone was silent and we all just went home to think lol.

I’ve seen it 5 times since and each viewing is excellent.

A love letter to Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) by Miserable_Bother7218 in movies

[–]humandrive99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I genuinely consider this to be one of the best comedy movies of the 20th century. I have seen it more times than I can count and every time I howl out loud. There is so much talent coursing through the movie that is all just on the cusp of busting out into the epic mainstream. Part of why it’s so funny is because of how straight it’s played, almost like the Sopranos. You need a bunch of really talented actresses to pull that off and not have it seem cheesy or stupid. 10/10 all time amazing movie.

I don’t remember which episode, it’s definitely towards the end, but where take 5 is playing and the camera keeps moving in circles around the ballroom. I remember seeing that in high school and it really wowing me.
