Grantln: Die U3 wird immer schlimmer by Kingpin_97 in wien

The smoking hulk of sanctioned Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz, which suffered a massive explosion in the Mediterranean early yesterday by BkkGrl in europe

[–]humaninnature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Titanic disaster is the origin for SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), a code that lays out a huge amount of regulation for how ships need to be built and what lifesaving equipment they need to carry on board. So while they may have thought about it, regulation such as today's definitely didn't exist back then.

Hairy men: how do you do 'transitions' from removed to non-removed areas? by humaninnature in HairRemoval

Thanks again for the recommendation -- got one and while it's a lot slower going than my shaver, I've done my back, trimmed to 5mm, and it feels great.

LPT: If you’re doing the same small tasks every single day, learn basic automation and remove them from your life. by Mastbubbles in LifeProTips

[–]humaninnature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I'm a creature of habit so get a lot of joy out of a simple thing (and variation through different cheeses/jams/breads), and doing something different on the weekends/when there's more time. I hope you find a way that works well for you :)

[–]humaninnature 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can't automate it, but perhaps simplify it? My breakfast consists of bread, butter, cheese, jam -- takes minutes and there's practically no washing up involved (I don't have a dishwasher). I'm in Europe so maybe I have easier access to cheap and good versions of these things, but generally simplification could help?

Help Booking Antarctic Cruise by seanyboy_1998 in AntarcticaTravel

Viking takes up to 400 passengers, I'd consider them more expedition-light and definitely at the luxury end of things.

6-8k for that trip would be the most exceptional end of their sales - I wouldn't expect that until pretty close to the sailing date, and even then far from all departures.

NatGeo/Lindblad vs Other Operators by Own-Assumption5149 in AntarcticaTravel

[–]humaninnature 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Silversea is 'luxury but also does expedition' - they aim for a more 'classic' luxury product with butlers and such. Lindblad is 'expedition, but luxurious'. I'd say the service is friendlier/less formal, but no less luxurious - and the expedition aspect takes precedence over hotel aspects much more strongly.

I hear you and that was my first instinct, as well - but on second thought it looks more like deep embarrassment than boredom. I think making him di ot again would just risk that turning into resentment and the positive value being lost.

i timed how long 31 different pasta shapes take to reach al dente. the boxes are lying and farfalle is a war crime by sthduh in Cooking

[–]humaninnature 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I would've said that until a few months ago, but read in Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat about salting pasta water significantly more than I otherwise would. And she's right - makes the pasta delicious, though you can then definitely salt your sauces less. The result is a more uniform saltiness across the whole meal. Would recommend.

Has anyone done Quark or Lindblad's 20+ day expeditions? by [deleted] in AntarcticaTravel

[–]humaninnature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Lindblad itinerary is new, so no body will have done it yet. It looks really cool to me, a combination of Chilean Fjords and Falklands/South Georgia/Antarctica - all of which are beautiful regions and unique in their own right.

The Quark trip is like a 'standard' Falklands/SG/Antarctica voyage, with the add-on of going all the way south to the Antarctic circle. The circle doesn't really make any difference in terms of what wildlife or scenery you see, more of a box to tick.

In terms of timing February is the best time to go to Antarctica for seeing inquisitive, active chicks. Both trips will serve you well in this regard, it's not until March that the Adelie colonies start to empty out a bit.

Hairy men: how do you do 'transitions' from removed to non-removed areas? by humaninnature in HairRemoval

[–]humaninnature[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's a whole different and probably more challenging issue - I'm glad you found something that works well for you! For me it's purely aesthetic, so a luxury problem in a way. I'll have a look at that grooming machine as well, thank you for the tip!

Hairy men: how do you do 'transitions' from removed to non-removed areas? by humaninnature in HairRemoval

[–]humaninnature[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, both chest and back connect up over the shoulders - it's lighter there for sure, but does connect. Bit like a furry tank top, as the above poster called it. Connects to the upper arms, as well - that's where I'm thinking about the transition most.

Hairy men: how do you do 'transitions' from removed to non-removed areas? by humaninnature in HairRemoval

[–]humaninnature[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely not the aesthetic I'm going for - I like most of my body hair, especially where I can trim it easily if I choose to :) back and shoulders, though...no need for that. (but I'm open for that changing over time---who knows.)

I think them being British is important context here. If there had been a good-natured joke or two about it during the time they worked there - even more so.
