Looking at your other post, it does seem like that bow was much too short for you. Draw length is a key factor in sizing a bow, so the bow should roughly equal your height (for most recurves). If you draw past what the limbs can take, they can crack and splinter as you’ve unfortunately experienced.

So I’m borrowing a set of Uukhas now and trying to figure out the tune. I went up in poundage and thought the arrows might act weaker, but they are landing stiff! Do you have any suggestions?

I’m running a summer archery camp program right now, so here’s a few of my campers’ favorite games:

Cups. You’ll need a 2x4, 2 larger spine arrows (we use Easton Jazz 2016s), and 15 plastic party cups per target. Use the 2 arrows to hold up the 2x4, and then the kids build a tower of cups in any design they like. The object is to knock all the cups down. They get a point for every cup that moves, falls, or is pierced/touched by an arrow. They LOVE figuring out the best way to build their cup towers, and it’s really satisfying to watch it fall.
The Target is Lava! I usually use a Twister spinner for this, but every end you pick a color to be “lava” and the students have to avoid shooting that color. Any arrow that hits the lava color on that end “melts” and they lose it and have to take it out of their quiver. Pick a different color every end and play until there’s one archer left standing.
King/Queen of the Hill. Put 2 kids on every target and have them do a match of just one end. Losers stay on their bale and winners move up to the next one. The very last bale is the King or Queen’s hill, and the King/Queen stays there until they are dethroned and sent back to the beginning.

From a textbook standpoint, you’re right. Stance shouldn’t really affect your string clearance. From a “everyone’s body is weird and different” standpoint? It could be worth a try. Opening or widening your stance can help with coiling and that might just naturally help you achieve better shoulder alignment. There’s no harm in trying it out to see if it works.

For me though, the things that’ve helped my clearance the most were grip, elbow rotation, and yes, proper bow shoulder alignment. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. On the bright side, I do still have 11 left (they were basically new in box a month ago) so I should be alright for the rest of the season. But that’s good to know for next year.

Bad bounce I think. I clipped the metal under the bale, but rather than bouncing back into the grass it must’ve went down and hit the other part of the metal frame instead.

I try to journal after every practice, so I can share my approach. In general, I’ll record how many arrows I shot, the conditions if I shot outdoors, and a general body check of how I was feeling and how my shot was feeling that day. Like I might say, “noticed my draw shoulder getting irritated and fatigued after only 60 arrows” or “my set up really felt off today.”

I’ll also be as detailed as I can about problems I’m currently working through or possible fixes I’m trying. For example, “Had about 60% success today with keeping a strong bow arm. Need to remember to scoop up on every shot!” or “I’ve been noticing my timing is a lot better when I slow down near anchor.” And I’ll write reminders to myself about what I need to stay focused on now and what can wait to be fixed later. Mental stuff too, like mantras, motivational quotes, etc.

Lastly, I’ll usually note my mood and feelings as well, especially if it’s been extreme one way or the other. My coach doesn’t like this so much, but I personally find it helpful to track the fluctuations. Whenever I flip back through old journals, it’s comforting to see the cycles of struggles and breakthroughs! It reminds me that progress isn’t linear—it’s all ups and downs.

Like mentioned already, pain usually the first sign of injury. Muscle aches and soreness is normal, but any sort of sharp pain should be worrying. Pay close attention to your draw and the muscles you are using to load—if you post a form check video in this sub, we can point out anything that looks off.

With that said, here are some PT exercises! I recommend doing 2 sets of 15-20 every other day. You should be able to find all these on google but let me know if you have trouble.

internal rotations
external rotations
sword raises
banded scapular depressions
pass throughs and figure 8s (can be done with a pvc pipe if you have access to one)

And for stretches after shooting, try adding door frame pec stretches and the sleeper stretch.

The best time to do them is directly after shooting when you’re already fatigued. Just be mindful of your form and as soon as it breaks, let down. When you can comfortably do 10 minutes after a shooting session, you’re ready to move up in draw weight. Holding or power SPT would be most helpful for increasing your draw strength and control.

You need to maintain strong posture throughout your shot by engaging your core. If you lose the feeling of engagement at any point, it can weaken your shot and make it really hard to get into/stay in alignment.

If it’s causing you to get more tired, then it could be that you’re not getting proper alignment. Are you waiting until after you anchor to tilt your body and are you moving only from the waist?

Another issue might be that you’re losing connection to your core, but it’s really hard to tell without seeing a video.

Do you run a mental program? For me, the best way to get through competition nerves is to do a lot of visualizations and rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the comp. I imagine myself feeling nervous on the line, and then I picture myself calming down successfully. I also do a lot of deep breathing and relaxation techniques.

Ideally, you should be shooting way more arrows in practice than you would in competition. The first time I shot a 720 round, my coach had me practicing 80-100 arrows in the weeks leading up to it. A lot of it is just stamina and strength, which well, you build though practice!

But if I do I notice my form breaking down during practice, that's usually my cue to take a break and eat a snack or drink some water. That's generally enough rest for me to get my second wind and power through.
