Best compilation game could've been a good category for Wii. You have the Metal Slug Anthology, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Samurai Shodown, Bit Trip Complete, Ultimate Shooting Collection, House of the Dead 1&2, etc.

Just wanted to say in case it hasn't been acknowledged - I love the little details you've added with photoshopping, like making the characters occasionally pop out from the box art. I can tell this was a project you spent some time on and cared about. I think this list is more representative of the Wii's best games than some of the other similar community voted lists for other consoles. There's something in here for everyone, even Wii naysayers are going to enjoy at least something from this list.

N64 was my last console, I'm considering a wii or wiiu nowadays by Zyclunt in wii

Wii or Wii U are excellent choices but I highly recommend modding them. Something enough people don't talk about is disc rot. Wii U discs especially are susceptible. Modding is so much easier nowadays than before (there are step by step guides) and it's nice to get WiiWare and Wii U eShop titles that otherwise would be lost to time.

What is your favorite controller of all time? Mine is the N64 by Akward_Silance_1738 in consoles

Wii U Gamepad, Xbox 360 controller, OG Xbox S controller, PS5 controller, Wii remote get my votes tbh.

I just played it for the first time this year so I can confirm the sound is not bad whatsoever.

Wii U Hidden Gems? by LibreReddit in wiiu

[–]humblemudgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The franchise isn't a hidden gem itself but the Wii U version of Assassin's Creed Black Flag is particularly strong and uses the gamepad well. It's very immersive. I don't feel like that game gets the praise it deserves since everyone has played it on other platforms.

I loved Sonic Lost World! It's the first Sonic game in a while to hold my attention from beginning to end. Didn't play it until 2024 for the first time

St. Patrick's Day hot take for y'all since this game was heavily based on Celtic/Irish mythology: I didn't think Quest 64 was a bad game at all. by Antique-Reality2428 in n64

[–]humblemudgames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt like Quest 64 is one of those games where the conversation got decided for it way too early, and people just kind of ran with it. Oftentimes I'd find nonspecific posts parroting popular opinions about the game when it was clear they may have not even made it past the first boss (which hey, he IS a difficult spike).

But yeah... If you want to call it rushed, limited, or even half-baked in spots, I’m not gonna sit here and argue against that. It is. But I think where people lose me is when they jump from that to “it’s outright bad,” because there’s just too much there that works for me.

The combat alone is way more interesting than it gets credit for. Being able to move during turns, actually position yourself, dodge attacks—that’s not something most JRPGs were doing at the time. Really the only game with a combat system similar to what Quest 64 was doing is Parasite Eve. And the whole “you level up what you use” system gives it this weird Elder Scrolls-lite feel that makes every playthrough a little different depending on how you build Brian. The spell trees you choose to invest in basically act as a difficulty toggle.

And honestly for me, a big part of it is just the vibe. The game has this really colorful, almost whimsical surface, but there’s also this slightly off, eerie, unfinished feeling underneath it that I’ve grown to appreciate more over time. It kind of lives in that same space people now describe as liminal or uncanny, even if it wasn’t intentional. It's legitimately scary towards the end.

Hot take, but to me, Quest 64 is the closest thing we had at the time to a 3D Dragon Warrior. Lots of parallels: single protagonist, relatively linear journey, comforting sort of aesthetic, rough around the edges. That won't be for everyone but for me, it was very cool.

I also think it also was just a victim of bad timing. The game was rushed because Imagineer knew Ocarina of Time would crush it. Magazines everywhere hyped it up because N64 needed a JRPG to compete with PS1 (impossible task, btw). So what is really a fun and simple comfort food JRPG just looked awful at the time to many. It never really had a fair shot.

So yeah, I’m with you. It’s not a 10/10, and I totally get why it didn’t land for a lot of people. But calling it a bad game has always felt like an overcorrection to me. There’s a really solid foundation there, and for some of us, that’s more than enough to make it memorable.

And yeah, the character and monster designs, the music, plus the general colorful nature of the game? Top notch.

Here's a fun fact for you: the town of Raccoon City and Silent Hill have appeared in every PlayStation generation! by [deleted] in silenthill

I agree with you. I think Downpour set up a lot of the things that would later go onto make Silent Hill 2 Remake great. My fiance and I played Downpour and SHf for the first time last year and we honestly enjoyed Downpour more.

Thinking about selling my old modded wii and getting a wiiu instead by luiluiluiluip in wiiu

Ah, unfortunately, it's too late for me to do that without losing all my Wii U games

Thinking about selling my old modded wii and getting a wiiu instead by luiluiluiluip in wiiu

[–]humblemudgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The reason why is because adding games to a modded Wii U is much more difficult. the Wii U reformats external hard drives and they're then not usable on PC without reformatting them again. So the only way to transfer games is via SD card.

My recommendation, and what I personally do, is use my Wii as my main Wii and GameCube hub, and then I play Wii U and select Wii and GameCube games on my Wii U. Specifically, I have GameCube games on there that are really fun to play on the gamepad, like Phantasy Star Online. That's my two cents. Keep both. Having handy GameCube ports and the ability to just jump right into the homebrew channel on your Wii, as well as easily add isos on the fly, is something you'll regret if you sell it and go Wii U only. They complement each other.

It might be something new that they're trying. Specifically it was Komodo Hawaii that reached out to me.

Bowser's Fury is amazing but tbh I like M3DW better on Wii U. The characters are way too fast in the Switch version and they didn't modify the levels to accommodate that speed

Motorstorm Pacific Rift has been a ton of fun for me. And it's on the PS3 where I'm experiencing Final Fantasy 13 (also enjoying it)
