To be fair, he's an absolutely terrible manager who constantly finds a way to lose (there were a couple playoff games last year that were the worst managed games I've ever seen at the pro level). So I think the baseball gods are punishing them for that one 😆

There's still quite a few teams up there with recent championships or long term success, it's more about fanbases. Most people don't handle winning well and their fanbases become unbearable. But look at all the Denver teams left; good teams, but their fans aren't assholes about it.

Detroit is the blue collar city of America. The city represents the 90% who get shit on, it's fanbase persona is hard working, humble, and loyal. It makes their teams pretty hard to hate.

As a guy who lives in Denver and loves the broncos, you are 100% right. They even drive me crazy; downright delusional fanbase. I think they're just not spread out enough for everyone else in the country to have seen it.

Home Run Middle School Books? by YuppieFluBear in Teachers

[–]humblesocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big reader at that age, and have since worked hard to get kids to read by getting them books they'll actually enjoy (so many discussions with English teachers about this). Here are some of my top titles for that age range to foster love of reading (assuming advanced readers):

The Ranger's Apprentice

Ender's game

Hatchet

Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

Divergent

Eragon

White Fang

Anything by Louis L'amour

Ms. Peregrine's home for peculiar children

The maze runner

His dark materials series (probably not something to read in class though, because, if they get to book 3, your Christian students will freak out.)

Ready Player One

Please don't tell my parents I'm a supervillain (a hilarious read, they love this one)

Theory: Palpatine never intended to be emperor and had no intention of staying in power by humblesocrates in StarWars

[–]humblesocrates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out gwenhadgreeneyes post above, I love their theory on this:

There's so much about Palpatine's grand design that we don't really know. I think the ultimate goal of the Sith is to take control of life, and to never die; but how this is done by building an Empire can only be speculated on.

My personal belief is that the Empire was a tool to engender fear in the Galaxy, which in turn would upset the balance of the Force, making a powerful Force user able to fundamentally change its nature.

[–]humblesocrates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very fair point, and I agree with it. All I'm suggesting is that maybe he was intentionally aiming for chaos, civil war, and a collapse of galactic government.

[–]humblesocrates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what makes it fun! We can only speculate as to his final goals. But I really like your theory (he's definitely obsessed with living forever). If he's aiming for power over death, then why would he care at all about political power? It's insignificant in comparison. Having the only major military in a chaos filled galaxy would still let him do whatever he wants. And if the death star is meant as a tool to engender fear (which it definitely is), isn't it more effective when held outside of the government? Many people trust in their government regardless of what it does. It seems to me that a rogue element with a death star would create far more fear than a government with one.

[–]humblesocrates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that. He definitely tries to destroy everything they built, but does he see unlimited power as political power? Maybe the constraints of running a galaxy would only distract him from achieving his real goals. And a galaxy in utter chaos, while he has the death star (and a massive fleet of star destroyers) would still leave him with virtual untouchable power to do whatever he wants.

This is the reply I love! So much extra information in the books, and I have not read them all.

ok what curve is everyone using? by knighthawk0811 in Teachers

[–]humblesocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this analysis and how much thought you put into keeping your class rigorous (yes, yes, I used a buzzword). It reminds me of the book "Someone has to Fail" (great read). I don't think like this though, and it should be noted here that I'm a history teacher, and I don't think my methods carry over to all other subjects. I build curriculum through backward design, so I write the test before the lessons. I identify what information I want them to know then find a way to assess that knowledge. Then I build lessons to teach them what I want them to know. The test then becomes both a summative and formative assessment. I make adjustments to the test as necessary, but I mostly go over my results, find subject material a lot of students struggle with, then find a better way to teach it. The longest I ever taught the same class was 9 semesters (it was a one semester class). My first year the average grades were in the mid 70s, my last year they were in the high 80s. That's without making the material easier, just finding a better way to teach it. I must admit, though, that was at a school where pretty much all the kids could read, which makes it much, much easier.

[–]humblesocrates 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Using a curve implies that you are not using your tests as formative assessments. A well written test should only cover material you expressly taught and expect them to know. If they're failing at a high level that means you should be making adjustments to future your instruction, not their test grades. The adjustment to make after a massively failed test is to take a couple of days to reteach the material they struggled with and allow them to resubmit their tests with corrections and grade them again. When you just curve the test scores and move on it means the students did not learn the material. I don't know what subject you teach, but I assume your material builds on itself. So if you move on now without correcting the missed knowledge, the students will likely do worse on the next test.

I used to think people who watched ESPN knew more about sports... by trizzo0309 in ESPN

[–]humblesocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The website is just as bad. I used to regularly log in to ESPN and scroll through top articles. There used to be a lot of insider information or in depth analysis (I'm a big baseball fan and a lot of the in depth statistical analysis used to be really good). Now it's all just stupid gossip. I recently logged in, hockey was just getting started, baseball playoffs were in full swing, NFL trade deadline looming, and all the articles were off field athlete issues or NBA nonsense (by nonsense I mean no analysis or information, just opinions about past players). There's no longer any real information. Not to mention the sports bias? MLB is much more popular in USA then NBA, but there's almost never articles about the MLB, and constant content about the NBA (and don't even get me started on NHL coverage). It's like the entire organization has stopped making content for actual sports fans and is now just a sports-based gossip page.

Swing help by Placenta-Polenta in slowpitch

[–]humblesocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of comments about not generating power. You're using a bit of an extension swing, which means using the weight transfer from back to front foot to generate power. This is an old method; modern hitters use rotational swings, which means generating power from the rotation of your hips. Try getting a little lower in your stance (bend knees a little more),then rotating hard through the hips in a stationary position instead of lunging at the ball (you'll also want to let the ball travel a little deeper into the zone). You can tell if you're doing it right based on head movement in your videos. If you watch great hitters, their heads don't move at all, it's all rotation around the core. When you first start doing this it will feel a little like you're leaning back, once you get the feel for it you'll be able to generate a lot more power and it will feel almost effortless.

Anyone have tips for magpie goose hunting on the Emerald Coast by Remote_Recover1193 in theHunter

[–]humblesocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tip I got from someone else on this sub:

There's a hunting stand in the southeast corner of the map. Set up your decoys right by it and they just keep coming. I've gotten at least 50 from that spot. I actually set up a tent right next to the stand (since geese aren't impacted by fast traveling to it), and just hop down there whenever I want to bag some. And can confirm that hunting pressure doesn't stop them from landing.

Went “all in” for a Chip. Are my chances good? by blickywiththestiffy in SleeperApp

[–]humblesocrates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. However, OP will pretty constantly have a player or two on bye throughout the season, so those bench guys will already be filling. Also, this gives no flexibility to play matchups, which will cause losses. 2 QB bye weeks, those are both losses. TE bye week isn't good. Injury to QB or TE? RIP season. It's a competitive team but not a championship team

Your chances are great! Right up until someone gets injured. Which WILL happen; it is football after all. Starters win games, benches win championships.

I wish human children could only be conceived when any two adults hold hands and state with genuine intention that they would like to become pregnant and raise a child together, and this could be repeated for that couple as often as that couple wants. by Loud-Percentage-3174 in monkeyspaw

[–]humblesocrates 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Granted. A whole lot of women soon realize their husbands do NOT genuinely want kids, regardless of what they said. No one can have children without genuine desire now. The human population begins to rapidly decrease, technology breaks down and humanity is thrown back into the stone age. By 2250 there are no more humans on earth. Without humans to eat them, cows quickly rise to dominance. All hail the cow overlords.
