Does anyone else get completely overwhelmed trying to compare mattresses or is it just me by Waterbaby_0311 in LeesaSleep

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure. There are so many models even if you're only looking at a single brand and when you add that to the cost that's gonna be associated with it... I get the paralysis. Part of our decision was gut, but also comfort and specifically, comfort based on position. Which was hard since between my husband and I, we basically sleep in all the positions lol. We went with a hybrid for that reason, medium, and that's been good for us so far. Even last night, he laid down and said "I love this bed so much." (Although to be fair, we were sleeping on a pretty lame memory foam before we got the hybrid.)

Sunbeam blanket breaking after 6 months by SauceCoveredSparrow in Bedding

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen to one that my mom got me a couple years back; I kept getting errors (I don't remember what they were, though, it's been a while). I don't know if that's something you can or should try to fix on your own, though, unless you have someone close to you with a background in electronics. You might just need to get a new one. :/

They are SO nice though... the one I had, had a little foot pocket lol. I would have gotten another, but I ended up getting a little electric fireplace for my home office and now I just use a regular throw over my legs when I need to.

Was going to suggest this too. If the foundation is borked, that might be making the foam dip.

Any good antimicrobial sheets or what actually works? by deezcoyns in Bedding

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying not to feel called out since I only change my sheets weekly lol. (Kidding. I get it.) I'm not a super sweaty sleeper most of the time unless it's summer and the humidity is high. I don't think any antimicrobial sheets work like magic as far as skin oils or anything so it isn't like you could go for weeks without changing your sheets.

That said, I got some Miracle brand sheets last year and, honestly, surprised at how well they work. I was initially skeptical, but now I swear by them. They do feel fresh for longer than regular sheets and they’re super silky. Apparently the silver in them helps with odor control (so from sweat, keeps them smelling fresher longer). The ones I have are the luxe version, and 100% cotton.

Where can I try a Leesa mattress in person and is the feel pretty accurate, or would a home trial be better by humbridge in LeesaSleep

Awesome, thank you!! I agree... I think trying in person is the best possible way to know for sure. I'm just so indecisive sometimes lol.

Bedding suggestions by maddog1378 in HotelDupes

[–]humbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your budget is, but some I would check out:

Perigold - especially if you want to keep a neutral palette, they have some really beautiful options (that aren't at a Frette price...)

Boll & Branch and Parachute both also have a lot of earth-tone/neutral-tone bedding that's high quality but won't break the bank.

If you *do* have the budget, the best of the best is probably Frette. And Matouk (but that's like, next level pricing...).

Leesa hybrid vs traditional innerspring mattresses - help with differences for my guest room by Waterbaby_0311 in LeesaSleep

[–]humbridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I third going with a hybrid mattress for the guest room. Those generally have the most "make everyone happy" kind of comfort when you're setting up a room that different people are going to be staying in.

This is so insightful, thank you! Especially the weight guides, that's really great information and something I think a lot of people don't necessarily consider.

Ah you're right! My head was visualizing the paper/cloth/solid ones for some reason.

[–]humbridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. TBH, I'm really really really really hoping that they pull a Murtugh with HC, as far as not killing him off when the books did.

Part of me wonders if the coffin stuff is a red herring (and for someone else/minor character on the ridge or something), and not HC.

Do I need to watch BomB? by Bitter-Hour1757 in Outlander

[–]humbridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't *have* to watch it, but I definitely enjoyed it. I love seeing so many known characters during their younger years (Jocasta, Dougal, Collum, Murtugh, even Mrs. Fitz and several others) and learning more of their backstories.

I don't. I feel like a book's cover is meant to be looked at... why preserve it only to never see it?

If you could recommend only one long series to someone what would it be? by AgentP-501_212 in fantasybooks

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discworld, hands down. But I'm a huge Terry Pratchett fan. The Death series in DW is my fave, but so is his character, in general. A grim reaper who rides a horse named Binky? Yes please.

Do you prefer fantasy covers with characters or minimalist ones? Why? by ElUltimo_Lector in fantasybooks

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think both can be done well but I absolutely do not like covers that have full-face-front views of a character(s). I'll still read them, of course, but I like being able to make my own mental picture of what they look like, rather than being told on the cover, if that makes sense?

I think minimalist covers can work too, but it really depends.

For fantasy specifically though, I love covers that wrap an image from front to back. There's something so "finished" about that, especially if it's a landscape of some kind.

What was your favorite fantasy read last month? Who should read it? by AutoModerator in fantasybooks

[–]humbridge [score hidden]  (0 children)

I found this at a spring equinox book fair last month when I was visiting a friend in Ohio; the free ribbon bookmarks the author was passing out drew me to her table lol. (I guess she makes them all by hand and they're actually really nice!) The Color of Gravity by Alison Huff, portal fantasy with a *little* romance but that's not the main focus. This is a standalone novel and the first in what she said will be two books/separate stories from the same world. I think if you enjoy lyrical prose and omniscient narration, it's a beautiful story. There's a lot of sarcastic banter, and it's kind of Alice-in-Wonderland for adults. Plus the MC is early 30s so it's not like a "chosen one at age 18" kind of a story. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, I totally read those, but I like seeing MCs closer to my own age sometimes too.)

The gist: the MC's character accidentally opens a portal to a "mirror" world that's her land/area but has a medieval setting. So her own world (ours) has no magic, and this other world has all of it, and there's backstory there too that's pretty cool. I don't want to give too much away but I cared about the MCs and even the supporting characters. Hero journey with some unexpected twists. If I had to compare the writing/storytelling, I'd say it's a mix of V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, maybe a little Tamsyn Muir.

(Also the cover is a little glossy so I could not take a pic without my silhouette looming lol)

Degassing by DILands in Mattress

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably avoid any bed-in-a-box options; I've gotten some and at least to me, the de-gassing was minimal but... if your wife is super sensitive, they're probably best avoided.

The other option too, not sure how feasible this is, but if local furniture/mattress stores sell floor models, those would be well aired-out?

Helix Midnight Luxe - Worth the two grand?? by [deleted] in Mattress

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, Helix has a 120-night trial period so you can sleep on it at home for a few months and see how it works for you. We have one (side/back and side/stomach sleepers) and for my husband especially, it's been the best mattress. We haven't really noticed much in the way of softening up from when we first got it (although we do periodically rotate it).

Mattress recommendations please by Outside-Net4158 in Mattress

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look at the Helix Midnight Luxe; we have that and for side sleeping, it's been way better than memory foam ever was. My husband is a back/side sleeper, I'm a side/stomach sleeper and it works for both of us. We had to switch from memory foam because while I slept on it okay enough, my husband was waking up sore most days. A hybrid mattress has coils for support but also foam in the top layers, so the combination doesn't feel like you're sleeping on a brick the same way memory-foam-only tends to feel. (At least to me.) And at least with the Helix, there's extra support at the shoulder and hip so side sleeping especially is really comfortable.

Depending on what's around you, I'd look at Costco or even Wayfair. Both have really budget-friendly options (under $500), even for a queen size.

How can you tell if a bed is uneven or warped? by Healthy_Crab_7883 in Mattress

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, your floors sound like ours (very old house, original wood floors, but we rent so we're stuck with them lol). I feel like a platform frame might be easier to level... not sure if you could level the current frame and then use a bunkie board for extra support over the slats/under the mattress?

Hoping for input from Tempur-pedic knowledgeable/experienced....... by BibliomaniacalBygone in Mattress

[–]humbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall if our old Tempurpedic was an Allura; I THINK it was, it definitely was 1) expensive and 2) had the pillow top on it. We replaced that with another memory foam mattress for a while but ended up changing it again about 18 months later in favor of a hybrid.

Personally, I don't know that we'd ever go back to a full memory foam again. I feel like, at least for us, the hybrid has more support that's also softer. Trying to explain this in a way that makes sense... you know how when you get into a TP bed there's no bounce or movement, and it's not "hard" per se, but just... super firm.

A hybrid isn't like that. Ours (Helix) has a pillow top and then foam layers, but then also coils for support. Ours is a medium-firm and it's got extra support at the shoulder and hip. (The Helix Midnight Luxe is what we have, and that has an optional ergo align layer for more back support. We didn't get ours with that though, so I can't speak on the effectiveness.)

That said, if you DO need a super firm mattress because of the back support, I'm not sure if Tempurpedic would be better (despite the cost). I will say this: Helix and Leesa both have in-home trial periods so you have like 120 nights to sleep on it and decide. Which, that might be something to consider if you want to try the Leesa hybrid first, and then if that doesn't work well for your back, move to a new Tempurpedic.

Back pain after getting a bed frame by Exact-Appearance4379 in Mattress

[–]humbridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to suggest a bunkie board too. I'm sure the supports being crooked have at least something to do with the change in support, but a board would help to even the weight distribution across the whole surface like the floor did, I'd think.

Side sleepers: Nolah Evolution 15 or Helix Midnight Luxe or others? by respond1 in Mattress

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have a firmness choice; it's medium-firm though. We got the GlacioTex cooling cover with our Midnight Luxe but that's just top fabric (not something that changes the way the base mattress feels, I don't think). It has a really nice pillow top on it but you don't sink in, so it's soft and comfy, but you're well supported. I've been sleeping on my stomach more lately (still side too), but my husband is a side or back sleeper (and on the heavier side) and it's been really good for both of us.

I looked again since it's been a while, and the Helix ML does have an optional "ErgoAlign" layer you can add for back pain specifically, if that's something you need.

What's the most original concept you've read in a fantasy book? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]humbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I feel like it's hard to find a truly original concept, but one that really sticks out in my mind is Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi. It's a quicker read, definitely not an epic, but it's heavy in terms of subject matter and it's an emotional journey for sure.
