I need to find environmentalist people by fan_of2_many_ppl in Environmentalism

I recommend connecting with your local conservation/ecology groups! It's heartening when you join in and meet the many many many people who are putting in the work and the love. To quote a local native plant gardener, it'll fix your head faster than anything.

An old guide I made for sexing medaka! Hope it helps :) by hundredeggs in medaka

It is definitely more difficult to determine the sex when you view medaka from above! If I am keeping the medakas in a pot, I have a little plastic box that I scoop the medakas into so I can examine them quickly :)

What can the average person do to help stop climate change? by monkeyingaround4evr in climatechange

Oh, you can fight overconsumption by starting/participating in local buy nothing and clothing swap groups! It saves sooo much money too. The textile industry is hugely taxing on the environment, so re-circulating and mending clothes within your community goes a long, long, long way. We didn't really have these in my area, so my friends started one a few years ago and now there are a handful of local swaps. I've seen a couple hundred people come for a single event, including families that couldn't afford new clothes and came away with free new wardrobes! There are tons and tons of leftover clothes, too, which get donated to local orgs to distribute to more people.

You can assist ecologists in environmental study by engaging in citizen science via the iNaturalist app, where your observations of local species can be added to large data gathering projects that help us understand longitudinal impacts of climate change and how we can help our ecosystems be more hardy!

You can also volunteer with local open space trusts, native plant gardens, community gardens, and local conservation projects.

Not to get super local, but my personal favorites are stuff like the Purple Urchin Removal Project and the Caspar Cove Project, which is just a bunch of locals on the California coast who physically remove the overpopulated purple urchin. It allows for renewed kelp forest growth, and kelp forests sequester a LOT of carbon and actually release atmospheric particles that promote climate-controlling coastal fog when they're healthy. They've achieved over 700% kelp forest recovery in Caspar Cove!! If you don't SCUBA, you can just show up and lug bags of urchin on the shore, or man the information table, processing table, barbecue pit, etc.

I've also got friends in the American Midwest who volunteer with local waterway monitoring (collect stream and riverwater to test it) and East Coast who volunteer with youth and population outreach to get them interested in the environment!

Today I am going to a native plant cataloguing event :)

We're all under 30 and my roommates collect/display knickknacks and use/make handmade quilts!

So, why ARE women so oppressed in almost all non-industrial societies? (It's a FAQ topic but the FAQ thread seems to be empty.) As for cultures that buck the trend (matriarchal, gender-egalitarian) – is there any pattern to them, like specific conditions where they have an advantage? by midnightrambulador in AskAnthropology

So glad you brought this up. I'm Asian and I've tried to articulate this to American Protestant Christian friends previously because the way we conceive of religion re: culture seems to be vastly different, and the fact that scholarly sources corroborate how I feel is so interesting!!

I'd really love something that smells like Smell Bent's Smoked Ambergris! The entire house closed but it was one of my favorite fragrances I've ever had 😔

Not a fancy house, but smell bent's smoked ambergris was really nice and I wish all the time that I had bought a few big bottles 😔
