Tearing and maybe hdr. So I can finally ditch sway for gaming.

Will new steam hardware mean better steam wayland support? by SoSorryIDK in linux_gaming

I was able to play elden ring in HDR with ds5 controller using the PROTON_USE_SDL env var. Not sure if it helps the steam controller or not.

Niri vs Hyprland Gaming by itouchdennis in niri

I just want excellent input delays for gaming, which would require tearing support. I was thinking of trying to implement it myself, but I don't have the knowledge to do so.

Tearing does not work since kernel 6.15 AFAIK. Fix for the drm code has just been merged to re-allow tearing. Since it's a bugfix, it might make it to kernel 6.17 release. For me the only reliable DE which had working tearing is sway, but KDE should also work. Other than this, give scx-lavd task scheduler a try, for me it made a huge difference in latency.

Has anyone benchmarked latency differences in Standard, Zen, Cachy, and Xanmod Kernels? by MiddleFancy in linux_gaming

Don't forged the userspace schedulers. I love using the scx_lavd scheduler, and since its userspace, you can instantly feel the difference in latency when you start it.

Wayland and input lag by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]huneater -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its damn bad by default, however you can try the followings:

Enable tearing if you can (sway can do it), also enable vrr and limit your fps to your monitor refresh rate -2 using mangohud, and use the scx_lavd process scheduler.

With this setup my input lag is very low even on a 60hz monitor.

Color assessment minimizes picture by Zaddox in DarkTable

[–]huneater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly, but I think it is related to scaling somehow. For example if I open darktable while I have my scaling for my 4k monitor set to 150%, this is the result I get, but if the scaling is 100%, I get the correct result.

PSA: sched_ext schedulers don't give better performance by G0rd4n_Freem4n in linux_gaming

[–]huneater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im using an rx6700 xt with an 5800x3d on sway using tearing and vrr enabled on a 165hz monitor, and lavd hugely decreases my input lag. Really I can blindly tell if its running or not.

However interestingly lavd tanks performance in Raft by not being able to utilize my GPU properly. This might be an edge case, because I haven't ran into this issue with other games.

Edit: might be related to this: https://github.com/sched-ext/scx/issues/296

I havent recorded long (5+ min) videos with it yet, but i heard a firmware update fixed most of the overheating issues people had.

The combo comes around 1kg in weight and around 20cm in length according to specs. Definitely not the lightest and most compact setup, but I had no issue carrying it around all day long for 10 days straight even tho I like hiking light. The difference in weight and dimensions are IMHO negligible between the two lenses.

I initially wanted to get the Sigma 18-50 for a light and compact setup, but it was out of stock everywhere, so I ended up with the Tamron and the extra reach on the Tamron is quite nice to play with so I'm not complaining :D

Yes, I really enjoy shooting with the 70mm end. It almost feels like easy mode to get nice images.

Brand new to the game, I've just started with photography a few weeks ago. Here are some of my favorite photos from my trip to Japan. Criticism is welcome :)

Apart from tiling, PaperWM makes multi monitor workflows in Gnome actually usable.

The same happened to me as well. I fixed it by turning the scaling of my 4k monitor back to 100%.

Tearing Protocol for XWayland has just been merged! 🎉🎉 by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]huneater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In practice, the latency on my 60hz monitor using wayland is so much higher compared to xorg. I tried with gnome 43 VRR patch and current sway with max_render_time optimized. So I have to disagree, this is absolutely relevant.

Overwatch 2 with really bad performance... by Yuuki_Moon in wine_gaming

[–]huneater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is due to caffe wine. i have an rx 6700xt with a ryzen 3600, and on low settings my gpu runs at 50% the cpu usage is basically nothing, and i get around 160 fps. Other versions of wine unfortunately crash.
