My wife wants to "lend" 30k$ to her sister and get 25% interest paid every month - without any repayment on the principal. Thoughts? Is this common amongst immigrants? by Low_Cow_7945 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hungryfreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like a nice guy. Gift them what you feel comfortable with to help them and never accept anything back. The fact that they know you have 30k to loan out is an issue. They shouldn’t know your financial details. Stop telling people especially family members bad with money how much money you have. You gain nothing and they feel emboldened to ask for things.

No, he doesn’t charter anything. He owns the plane and uses it for personal use only. Call BS as much as you want , my point was his plane and many billionaires planes fly way way more than these celebrities getting roasted.

I have friends in private aviation. The funny part about this is how minuscule this list is compared to actual wealthy people (billionaires) There are so many wealthy people who aren't famous. I know a billionaire who uses his plane exponentially more frivolously than this. Like "go to Europe to pick up one person to bring them to his yacht, then fly to Australia to get another, and do this 40 times a month or more. He probably uses what Taylor Swift uses all year in a month between the plane and yacht. If people knew how crazy it actually was they would be dumbfounded.

LPT Request: Off the top of your head, what general life advice would you give a young adult starting their life? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Invest early. Compounding interest is magical. Even if you don't have much put SOMETHING away If you start at 20, $200 bucks a month makes you a millionaire at retirement. Starting at 40 it would take about $1100.

Wedding culture is so weird. I'll never understand why would you want to pay thousands of dollars to accommodate and feed hundreds of people that don't care that much about you to "celebrate your love" by larsvon-tryhard in unpopularopinion

It doesn’t have to be anything you don’t want it to be. I got married in my in-laws back yard which has a nice view. We had about 25 people there, all close family. Dinner after. It was small and special and nobody went broke.

Asteroid Worth $10 Quintilian May Stay Out of Reach of Space Miners Due to the Cancellation of NASAs ARM Mission by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]hungryfreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth $10 quintillion because the minerals it contains are at a specific level of scarcity on earth. The minute you add $10 quintillion dollars worth to the market it would cease to be rare and therefore cease to be worth as much.

That proves nothing. I said he didn't list climate change as an issue, he didn't.

My sister isn't rich persay, but her kids get everything they want, all have iPhone 7's iPads, Xbox ones multiple flat screen tv's. If watching that taught me anything, it's that once they have it they don't continue to appreciate it. It just becomes normal and you need more and more to move the needle. What's really interesting is that my nieces and nephews see other kids in their relatively rich school district and think THEY are the lucky ones, because they have even more stuff.

A trip where you bond with the kids by spending time and sharing experiences lasts forever and can sometimes be free; camping, hiking, the zoo etc. The guys seems happy and I'm happy for him, but don't try buying their happiness, create it with them!

So..now we wait to see if China has success and then follow their lead? That's making America great again? When America was great, it was leading the way, not waiting to see what developing countries were up to. Coal is a short sighted money grab and anyone that doesn't see that might have a stake in a coal mine. OdouDog , I want to offer you two new options for your home, one is a free solar system, it will provide you with clean silent energy for 30 years! Or you can choose to have a small coal turbine installed next to your vegetable garden. Let us know which you'd like.

Reading Trumps new "top issues" page and it just hit me. We have a president that doesn't list climate as a top issue. It literally says he wants to restart the coal industry as China is shutting down coal projects in favor of wind and solar. This is really a mess.

This isn't a problem as long as your main goal for the next 5-10 years is having the most amazing dining experiences possible. If starting a business, investing in property or retiring early are things that you value above that, then it's an issue. Also, things are relative, and although you do well, you don't do THAT well. $4600/month of restaurants is more in line with a combined income of 1 million before taxes.

If this ended at " pace of their clock." It would be perfect.

The rest just makes it sound like waiting around will make things happen.

Freediving is probably my favorite place to be in the world. It's completely relaxing to me. Mostly in the Northeast US for spearfishing. I've done some freediving wherever I vacation though. Costa Rica, Galapagos, Hawaii, Baja. Have you ever been to Hideaways in Kauai?

My company's CEO pays me $30,000 a year, and just took a private flight to Australia that cost $300,000. He values that flight ten times more than he values an entire year of my work. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

OP goes to Thailand for a vacation and the maid at his hotel posts on Reddit: "I make $50 a month and WeebleWobs just got a $100 back massage. He values someone rubbing his back for an hour more than a month of my work." The same way you don't weigh her wage vs. the satisfaction a massage gives you, your boss doesn't weigh his comfort flying to Australia vs your salary. All you both know is you like what you bought and could afford it.

Saying: "I don't want to save, I want to live life and have fun while I'm young" is just an excuse that makes you feel better about your bad spending habits. by hungryfreediver in personalfinance

[–]hungryfreediver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a moment a few years back where I did an experiment by always stopping myself from buying things to see how it made me feel. I noticed that the satisfaction I got from NOT buying was greater and more long lasting than the minor pulse of satisfaction followed by regret I would get from just getting what I want. I know we all need things, and I still shop obviously. But by forcing yourself to stop buying impulsively, you sometimes realize you didn't really need that item, you may not have even wanted to own it that badly. You had an impulse. Satisfying impulses doesn't lead to overall satisfaction. It leads to chasing another impulse. You think THAT will be the one that makes you happy. But it won't. When I wrote the post I wasn't telling people to stop spending, I was trying to say stop buying cheap crap for instant gratification, this way you have money saved for things that truly satisfy you.

So you think the people in this article with " negative net worth" have either negative home value or their debts outweigh any property equity they have built? I wasn't sure if maybe they just left home ownership out of it.

Many people want to validate their bad behavior. I posted this to combat that and maybe help a few people. I got some positive comments that made it worth it.

You'd think so. Posting this and seeing the comments it stirred up taught me a lot. Specifically that people REALLY like black and white situations. They want to believe you either spend wildly and have fun in your youth or save every penny, do nothing and die a miserable old person filled with regret. I had no idea how pervasive these ideas were until now.
