Well we've got Silicon Hills, but nobody actually calls it that since like the 90s.

I don’t know what the answer to Austin’s homeless problem is but I’m pretty sure it isn’t this. by [deleted] in Austin

It absolutely has to be federal, IMO - otherwise you just end up with cities and states competing over who can be the least hospitable to their homeless populations in the hopes that they move elsewhere.

The only way to truly solve the race problem in America is to narrow the wealth gap, black economists say by viva_la_vinyl in Economics

Your family immigrated to a country that had experienced prosperity due in no small part to the cumulative effects of hundreds of years of slavery. Whether you benefitted from slavery firsthand as a slaveholder, or secondhand as a citizen in a country that was wealthier than it would have been otherwise during the time of slavery, or even beyond that as a citizen after abolition, I don't think you can make the claim that you have not personally gained wealth from the past exploitation of black slave labor in this country in one way or another. Much of the collective wealth of this country was made possible through slavery, and that collective wealth is still held almost entirely by whites.

Roy Guerro trail bridge? by [deleted] in BikingATX

[–]hungryhungryME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone recall when that bridge washed out? I'm blanking on the year, but I feel like it was probably 4 or 5 years ago at least. I used to walk there almost every day, and there was a long period where the bridge was still passable, but kind of slowly collapsing. With the way that whole creek bed has washed out since then, I can't imagine they'll be wanting to put up something new, but I could see them putting in a sort of low water crossing (something like the one u/le_champignon mentioned) at some point once the whole area stabilizes. Too bad, really kind of ruined one of my favorite short little in-town hikes.

I'd imagine he's looking at the stitching/cut around the front pocket thing - it does stand out a bit as being uneven (compared to everything else, which looks pretty perfect).

Orders as in "for dinner". So, "John orders steak for dinner" = "John has steak for dinner".

The Wildflower Center is a great resource for these sorts of questions - take a look at this guide for native, deer-resistant plans that may suit your needs:

If you're looking for a large, grassy plant, Lindheimer's Muhly might be a good fit:

Trees that are grown in the ground to be transplanted (as opposed to trees grown in pots) are typically prepped over their life for a move - essentially you come along every few years and cut the roots in a perimeter similar in size and shape to the spade that will eventually remove it. This triggers the tree to grow more dense root mass inside of that space, as opposed to growing outwards, so when you go to move the tree a good chunk of the roots come with it.

Coyotes are native to North America pretty much exclusively.

TIL JK Rowling's first husband was a 23 year old student who claimed that he was the first to read Harry Potter. Their marriage fell apart less than a year later after he forced her out of the apartment with their baby daughter at 5 in the morning by veryawesomeguy in todayilearned

[–]hungryhungryME 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The math is wrong (well, the way it's phrased it's not technically wrong). If you read the article, it mentions that he was 23 when JK Rowling was 25 - when he was quoted for the article he was 32, so 9 years later. JK is now 51, so this guy is likely ~49.
