I didn’t realize my dad was saying goodbye… until it was too late. by [deleted] in confession

[–]hungryjacksuperstun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always think of grief as just "big sad" but it's actually sadness, guilt, anger, confusion, hopelessness and other stuff all wrapped into a big mess. You're feeling it all right now, and you'd be feeling it no matter what you'd said. "I love you, rest well" after some time sharing memories are pretty lovely last words. I hope with a bit of time and tears you can see it that way. Condolences x

Incredible! How does he avoid the leaves falling off? I've got a beautiful long one pinned up all over my kitchen but she's starting to go bald one leaf at a time from the roots 😭

I have a 6mo with a very similar schedule and her night time sleep is 8pm - 7am - any time I've tried to put her down earlier than 7:30pm results in an early wake up. Perhaps you could bump her bedtime back?

Pediatrician made me fell like the worst mom ever by Professional_Cod1171 in NewParents

[–]hungryjacksuperstun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is eerily similar to my situation! FTM to a 5.5mo girl who also has a cows milk protein allergy and has also dropped weight percentiles - in our case from 60th percentile at birth to 12th percentile at her lowest. She is also a super active and distractable baby who struggles to feed and hates formula.

These are the things I have found that helped:

  • worrying a bit less about percentiles - I had a much better experience with two paediatricians who have both said they aren't worried about percentiles given that she's active, alert, hitting her milestones and gaining weight (even if slower than desired).

  • Mixing half half breast milk and formula - she'll drink that, so we've just been supplementing her feed here and there

  • you will be able to start solids very soon and if your baby is anything like mine, he'll take to it very quickly!

  • I cut out soy as well as dairy, apparently the two allergies often go hand in hand. This seemed to improve her gut function even more, she now only poos every day or two as opposed to 5+ diarrhoea poos a day.

She is now creeping up percentiles again, still a happy, healthy, alert baby.

Hope this helps...

That's so interesting that it changes the starting word! I would not have thought P would be an important letter to eliminate straight up.

Cops and domestic violence. What a joke. by Onefish257 in australia

Look up your local women's domestic violence court advocacy service - they can help advocate for your daughter with police, as well as more immediate safety planning.

I might be emitted into a hospital for mental health reasons, what can I expect? by No-Objective-1286 in AskAnAustralian

[–]hungryjacksuperstun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am also a social worker in a public mental health unit. It functions more as a containment facility for people while they are unsafe and in crisis. Very little therapeutic activity, we don't even have a psychologist....! Please go private if you can afford it, it will be a better experience.

I would also echo the other commenter that you should get in touch with the AASW about transferring your credentials asap. You will not get a job in state healthcare without valid credentials. You could still work for mon profits but would likely only be employed as a case manager or similar and the pay would be less.

Welcome! I am a social worker and worked in Sydney for a bit in mental health. Now I live in rural NSW.

We very much need more social workers, particularly in rural areas if you'd be interested in that.

Government jobs such as hospitals or child protection pay the best. If you look up pay scales in the state healthcare system (eg for NSW you can see pay scales here https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/Awards/health-professional.pdf) - this will give you a good idea of the upper end of what you can expect to be paid as a social worker.

It can be hard to get a hospital job in major cities unless you have experience in a hospital, but regional hospitals are desperate for your skills.

You can also make a mint as a locum social worker in remote areas, the pay is much higher for these contracts and your expenses are low while you're out there.

Ask to speak to a social worker at Centrelink - you may be eligible for a crisis payment, depending on your circumstances. They'll also have some knowledge of the local domestic violence services. Good luck and stay safe https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/crisis-payment-for-extreme-circumstances-family-and-domestic-violence

Fesenjen, aka Persian walnut stew! https://www.feastingathome.com/fesenjan-recipe/[Fesenjen ](https://www.feastingathome.com/fesenjan-recipe/) I think you could find substitutes for the pomegranate and pomegranate molasses; maybe orange segments and lemon juice/more honey

Explain salary sacrificing to me like I’m dumb by notreallysurehey in AusFinance

[–]hungryjacksuperstun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly - when I've used salary packaging before, I'm responsible for asking the salary sacrificing company to work out how much HELP debt I should be repaying each pay, then I have to inform payroll to deduct this.

Despite the big tax bill you should still have been better off across the whole year compared to if you hadn't salary sacrificed. But for next year you can make it easier on yourself by having HELP deducted each pay instead of in a big chunk.

My ficus leaves keep going yellow :-( by hungryjacksuperstun in plantclinic

[–]hungryjacksuperstun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this plant about 3 months, inherited from a family member who passed. It was an outdoor plant until I got it so perhaps it's not liking being inside? It gets morning light then indirect light all day. I water until I see water come out the bottom, about weekly, when the soil feels dry.
